- The film is about the daily lives of people living in a Mumbai chawl. Rajaram, a clerk, is secretly in love with his neighbour, Sandhya but is unable to disclose his love, mainly due to his timidity. One day, his fast-talking friend Bashudev comes and impreses Sandhya to get going with her. However, Bashudev soon comes into trouble because of his flirty nature and his engagement with Sandhya gets cancelled. Rajaram finally expresses his long hidden love towards her and the two come together.

One of the greatest art movie based on the life of a simple middle class man. This is one of my favorite which i have watched over a hundred times during the last 10 years. I like such genre of movies with simple stories without any nudity.
Just two years had past since the demise of Mohammed Rafi when this movie was filmed. This movie pays tribute to him by playing "Mujhe matt roko mujhe gaane do" from Sargam at the beginning and then playing "O bade mian deewane aise na bano" from Shagird towards the end.
What a brilliant film bollywood industries has made. Each and every characters lived their life in the film. Hope no one could forget from memory ever and ever.

Farook played the character of a narcissist in this movie so well.. They have no guilty feeling of their wrong doing and keep playing and spoiling others lives while being obsessed in themselve. The girl was lucky to get Raja Ram at end but in reality this might not be the case.. Very beautiful movie..

Farooq Sheikh and Naseruddin Shah’s brilliant performance in this movie, I love all aspects of it. Whenever I watch this movie there's a little anger which surfaces from underneath my hidden wounds. I believe such people come into our lives to make us better, to make us who we are today, much kinder and more forgiving. We can either decide to be a deer or a wolf. It's a choice we have to make, I am sure you all know which one would make us feel at peace.
I am simply obsessed with that part of the movie which starts at 1.21.55....... where Farooq is part of Rich party while Naseeruddin is part of the chawl get together.

It has been so beautifully directed with minor details.

I have been to both the kind of parties many times and sincerely, I hate both these kind of parties.

The rich party makes me feel uncomfortable due to extreme formal behaviour and hundreds of etiquettes to follow.

Having said that, I deeply despise the low grade chawl/flat functions where only our cheapster neighbours are there pulling eachother's legs. 😊😊😊
always used to see farooq sheikh in naive and simple man role and naseruddin shah very lively,crook,cunning roles but in this movie, both actors did totally different role then the one they used to do and still fits perfectly.what a genius both are.

@@BeingL3X But trust me, the Malayalam film is hilarious and it goes to another level with all the legendary actors in Malayalam cinema. It was so good that it seemed like an original. It is only recently, I happened to see a video of the scriptwriter and actor Sreenivasan saying that this was a remake of 'Katha' that I came to know about this.
