THis is the saddest news I've read this year really. I didn't know 'till now because I was looking for Jani's solos in you tube.. I really think Jani is a cornerstone to this band. Good Luck to the band, and overall great luck to JAni...
thank's! wow impresive, well., will see what happen's! i not reaaly into metal, but the first time i listent o this song i almost cry! ever since i love this band, saw them 3 years a go,they open for overkill, and they couldnt belive people were singing the song jani was so happy, i had a chance to talk to them after the gig, i was happy too, byeee jani!!!! thanks 0fs1l3nc3!
thanks^^...i must say, that if i want to buy one of their next albums ,i must listen to the "new" music...it is like Jani gives the song a soul, like Tony
It's not about if evil is capable of replacing jani. jani is the spirit of sonata, it's like a hot dog without sausage, it shouldn't exist. Jani is not only a superb guitarist, he's more than that for the real fans.
It's sad that Jani is no longer the guitarist for SA, but I just came back from the show at Slims in San Francisco, and Elias is amazing. He does some very unique things with some of the solos, as well as varies the original distortion from some songs like "Wolf and Raven" and "Full Moon." (example: SA combined these two songs into one seamless song). Don't worry fans, I actually liked these new versions of these older songs better than the original.
elias has got a great stage presence, different from jani's but seemed to fit the band perfectly. still, and will always be a fan here! long live sonata!
I hope Jani comes back to SA someday. Not likely but I can hope. The whole situation is just tantalizing. I greatly enjoy both the "new" Sonata Arctica and Cain's Offering, but I don't enjoy either as much as the original SA. It's like they both know they'd be better together and are just waiting for someone to make the first move =P Okay, that last bit was a bit of a joke, but it's so frustrating!
Don't get me wrong, Elias is a GREAT guitarist. Saw him live with SA about a month ago, and his playing, especially during his solo segment, was nothing short of mind-blowing. The guy's a virtuoso in his own right. But Jani was one of the very unique things about the band. He and Henrik had a totally unique chemistry when they played together. A couple of really good examples are "The Cage" and "Still Loving You". They play off of each other so well. However, Cain's Offering kicks ass.
IMOPO, SA's best times were with the next line up: Tony Kakko (Vocals) Tommy Portimo (Drums) Mikko Harkin (Keyboard) Marko Paasikoski (Bass) Jani Liimatainen (Guitar)
this answers my own question (this is part of the announcement made by SA, you can read the whole thing at Jani's website): "Therefore we would like to make known the following: During fall of '06 and spring of '07, Jani's personal matters and actions drove us to a situation where we had no option but to ask Jani to leave the band."
i think so too, thats why said at the end "the show must go on"...we will see how sonata arctica will become in the next years, but i made this video because i think its bad that Jani leaves the band and i think that a lot of people are thinking the same (sorry for the bad english^^)
Sonata's best days are behind them, Silence and Winterheart's Guild are their best records, they sum up janis' incredible talent, he is one absolutely no one will be able to replace him, so that puts pressure on Elias, he's a great player and good soloist.....live performance will not dissapoint you........but still Jani is one the best guitar players in the worls, my opinion
That's really sad...he was a great part of Sonata Arctica. But Cain's Offering is awesome =) What exactly were the civil/military duties he failed to serve? And I think it's really great that the band waited for him to get his life back in order before revealing the decision.
Dude definitely listen to Cain's Offering! They are straight, balls-out power metal. And Timo really tears it up too. Check out their song "My Queen of Winter". I'm so disappointed that this song has no solo, but it's my favorite on the album. Enjoy ^_^.
@skullvomit666 Haha, i know. How awesome is it. When he got fired, Jani didn't talk shit about Sonata, he didn't chuck a tantrum... nothing... he just disappears off the face of the earth. Then, the next thing you know. Jani is back, with a better band, and playing face melting metal in the vein of Sonata in their prime. Jani lets his guitar do the talking. That's what makes him fucking awesome.
i dont think that Elias is a bad guitarist...i actually think, that he can do his work, but i liked the personality of Jani in SA, so its sad, that he had to leave the band. I will see SA live and i hope, that Elias is good because i like SA^^
Don't get me wrong, Elias Viljanen is an amzing guitarist and a worthy member of the worlds greatest band, But i think he can never replace Jani entirely, abolutely iconic.
In all fairness Elias is a fucking God! You can't say he's just a shredder from what you've heard him do for sonata arctica. Listen to his solo songs, they are beautiful songs with technique and emotion. I admit that Jani was better in sonata arctica, but as a guitarist and solo composer Elias wins every time
tony is the mind... ...but jani was the "fanmaker".... ...just hear the GREAT diference... ...you hear that epic solo of wolf and raven with elias and fell... betrayed....
when you think so, then its good...but i think without him, its not the same band as before..and im a REAL sonata arctica fan..i dont say, that i will not hear SA anymore, i only think its sad
First time i hear about this, and i think it sucks that they parted ways =(. 0:47 = John Petrucci's old signature Ibanez :D but Jani is a fan of petrucci so that doesn't surprise me at all. GO JANI GO!!!
If he wrote "100%" of the songs that means he wrote the lyrics, the guitar riffs, the guitar solos, the bass lines, the keyboards and the drums. That's not likely, to say the least. He probably comes up with the lyrics, vocal melody and chord structures, and Jani would make riffs to fit etc. which isn't the same, to be fair
@EpicPowerHeavyMetal Bands and artists inevitably change over time, as do the people in it. I doubt Jani's presence would have changed the album significantly. I also don't see in which way you think the album is a mess.
Jani Rocks!, Elias is maybe as good as Jani, but it's not the same... Anyway, Im looking foward this new Sonta Arctica!!! I like to belive that everything hapends for a reason.....
@EpicPowerHeavyMetal I honestly loved The Days of Grays, but there was no guitar in this album. None. Tony is an amazing artist--without a doubt; but Jani really sold the show. Tony, Henrik, and Markko can't alone sell the show. Jani needs to be back, sadly--or Elias really needs to step his game up.
well, yeah the keytarist is important, Thats why I said jani was 60%. It would be unfair to say he IS the band because of Tony's powerful singing, Henrik's key's and Tommy's badass drums. But the main reason I listened was because of his brilliant guitar work. And since they found a replacement very quickly, that made me lose some respect for the band. I guess lets just wait for the new CD...
Sorry people, but the soul of Sonata is Tony. I like Elias and I love his soloalbum. Oh that are two. I think it would be the blank horror if Henkka would leave the band.
thanks but im sorry to say that he leaves the band...go to the official site of sonata arctica (i cant post the link because of youtube o.O)...thats why i made this video
Yeah i really thing the show should have gone on but now it really sucks I saw them last week and I really got dissapointed even Elias is good guitar player but he can´t fix Jani´s place in the band, ans as someone said Jani and Tony were the band´s soul, and as I´ve seen Tony can´t do it alone, the very real problem is that no one n the band is capable to do it, the only one who tries is Tommy but he must be out in his drummer role, really Jani will be missed
@RIPebz Why did he leave, anyways? Everyone seemed to love the guy; it seemed like nobody wanted him out. And it doesn't seem like he'd want to go either. What am I missing?
hmmm i want to see it *look on sonata arctica website* no he leaves the band (look on band there is Jani called an Ex-Member) and in the news was written, that he leaves the band...he has to go to the prison (or something like that) but he leaves the band
So is it (leema-tai-nihn) or (lye-mah-tay-nihn) And sorry I forgot to say I already knew how to pronounce Alexi, but I don't know about Laiho :( Beautiful song, Tallulah!!
this guy somehow found a way to make power metal technical. most of their songs are quite hard to play, while other power metal is just power chords and a shitload of tremolo picking haha.
do you have a link to the interview of a website that might have it? noone really has info on the situation and i'd love to know what tony has to say about everything.
Jani left the band because of trouble with the government of finland. He did not do his military. No he must do it and the band and jani decided to go their own ways... New guitarist is elias viljanen.
i really don't get why he left. if you watch the ending of the For the Sake of Revenge tour when they're taking bows he looks like he's having a lot of fun. WHY JANI WHY?!?!?!?!?!
doing mandatory service to your country seems like a wierd reason to kick someone out of the bamd for ever. i hope that when he is done, SA lets jani back in.
Get your facts right. Jani didn´t LEAVE PERMANENTLY the band, it´s right there in theyr website, he'll return to sonata once his duties with the finnish government are over.
lol whatever man. i saw them in cleveland on the 4th and elias is more than capable of filling jani's shoes. a band is like a family, sometimes you take breaks from each other, other times you separate completely, but you're always family. jani and the band separated on good terms, but jani had his own bullshit going on that was dragging the band down. get over it. neither side talked shit about each other, so why make up your own? long live sonata.
this is just to those guys who keep talking shit!!!!!!!!!!!! sonata will be always sonata but it really hurt to say good bye to jani, so ...... jani .. u where amazing the other guy is great but u.. m ,. well you where just. sonata! misss you?
look. if he wanted to be in sonata right now, he would be. but he didn't take care of his personal shit. bottom line. it's not like he was replaced, he was let go because his baggage was hurting the band and he wouldn't man up and take care of it. i love the guy, but you know all those songs you like by sonata? jani didn't write them, tony did. i'd be more concerned if he was the one let go because then the whole face and main song writer would be gone.
well, ive seen sonata 2 times, one with jani and one with elias. and in my opinion, they were just as good with elias. its not really "jani's work" as you put it, since tony wrote all the parts (even most of the solos), so it really doesn't matter whos laying down the guitar. jani kicked ass, but im just talking about the big picture, ya know?
no, no, no,no. Elias is very good, a talented man, and a brilliant guitarist. But here's only one of Jani, and the solos he wrote belong to him, and noone can play them as he did. So don't say stupid thing about Elias!!!! It must be hard to him too.
This song fits too well... "I remember little things you hardly ever do...tell me why, I don't know why it's over..." *cries again*
THis is the saddest news I've read this year really. I didn't know 'till now because I was looking for Jani's solos in you tube.. I really think Jani is a cornerstone to this band. Good Luck to the band, and overall great luck to JAni...
I can't believe he's not in SA anymore. He was like one of my heroes. It is very sad. I wish him the best.
absolutely! He is a role model for every aspect of guitar playing!
JANI!!! We're gonna miss you man!!
thank's! wow impresive, well., will see what happen's! i not reaaly into metal, but the first time i listent o this song i almost cry! ever since i love this band, saw them 3 years a go,they open for overkill, and they couldnt belive people were singing the song jani was so happy, i had a chance to talk to them after the gig, i was happy too, byeee jani!!!! thanks 0fs1l3nc3!
jani liimatainen was,is and will my guitar idol!!!!!!!!!! his style and tecnic are fantastic!
thanks^^...i must say, that if i want to buy one of their next albums ,i must listen to the "new" music...it is like Jani gives the song a soul, like Tony
It's not about if evil is capable of replacing jani. jani is the spirit of sonata, it's like a hot dog without sausage, it shouldn't exist. Jani is not only a superb guitarist, he's more than that for the real fans.

JAAAAAAAANI ! :'(
Seen I've seem him the first time is my Idol..
When I've see the statement on SA's site this summer, I was So soooo sad !
elias has got a great stage presence, different from jani's but seemed to fit the band perfectly. still, and will always be a fan here!
long live sonata!
Thank you for the video. it's awesome
I want jani back in sonata :(
Sonata Arctica is no the same without Jani
Jani is the best!!!
Tony Kakko (Vocals)
Tommy Portimo (Drums)
Mikko Harkin (Keyboard)
Marko Paasikoski (Bass)
Jani Liimatainen (Guitar)
Important in this band is Tommy. He's the last original member in the band and great drummer.
I hope Jani comes back to SA someday. Not likely but I can hope. The whole situation is just tantalizing. I greatly enjoy both the "new" Sonata Arctica and Cain's Offering, but I don't enjoy either as much as the original SA. yes, i agree.
Jani was 60% of the band, without him they are nothing...
Yep thats true ... Can't stay when others won't him ... but never mind what to say =\

I LOVE IT < 3 But it's so sad Jani had to leave the band..
5 Stars.
thanks for the feedback, but look on the upload date....its a long time ago
I would... sonata is just not the same without him!
good video,i'm crying
That's really sad...he was a great part of Sonata Arctica. But Cain's Offering is awesome =) What exactly were the civil/military duties he failed to serve? And I think it's really great that the band waited for him to get his life back in order before revealing the decision.
exactly!
bkn el video
grande jani :)
great video
jani's a god
with "the show must go on" at the end, i mean that Jani must go his way and i hope we will hear something from him
yes thats why i take this song. and with the chorus "...its easyer to live alone..."
Sonata will continue to create fantastic music, Jani or no Jani. I look forward to a new era of SA with Elias. :-)
How did that go mate? :D
Dude definitely listen to Cain's Offering! They are straight, balls-out power metal. And Timo really tears it up too. Check out their song "My Queen of Winter". I'm so disappointed that this song has no solo, but it's my favorite on the album. Enjoy ^_^.
on top of the fact that Jani still played on Unia and Tony writes all the songs anyway.
It´s a shame really, jani´s not in sonata arctica anymore.i don´t like elias anyway.
but sonata arctica will never be the same without jani.sad
right. lets see what evil do with the guys on the next LP. he is also a awesome guitar player.
@skullvomit666 Haha, i know. How awesome is it. When he got fired, Jani didn't talk shit about Sonata, he didn't chuck a tantrum... nothing... he just disappears off the face of the earth. And sorry I forgot to say I already knew how to pronounce Alexi, but I don't know about Laiho :(
Beautiful song, Tallulah!!
when you rate the video, please write a comment
i hope so buddy, SA isnt the same for me without jani
yeah, but without Jani, its no more sonata arctica...its like Sonata arc
did you know that was Jani who recommended Elias to replace him?? thats because Elias learned whit Jani...
Jani :'( :'( sa serais trop bien qu'il revienne dans Sonata Arctica !!!!! (en + Elias il joue mal --")
this guy somehow found a way to make power metal technical. most of their songs are quite hard to play, while other power metal is just power chords and a shitload of tremolo picking haha.

Except for the fact that there's not a single solo anymore in their songs and all the songs are written solely on keyboard?
He didn't go to army and he was kicked out because haven't done community service and his life was a mess. Something like that
OH wow! Lol thank you. So how do you pronounce Liimatainen? And can someone help me pronounce Alexi Laiho?
@RIPebz Ah, but do you ever think he'd come back?
Jani will return after his service so i heard
Elias viljanen is great guitarist but Jani is BEST 4 EVER
Get your facts right. Jani didn´t LEAVE PERMANENTLY the band, it´s right there in theyr website, he'll return to sonata once his duties with the finnish government are over.

long live sonata.
take a look to cain's offering, new jani band!
ah i see it...but that is not my fault....its youtube because on my video on my computer, i cant see it
Actually... he writes -most- of the music. Jani wrote My Selene. And that's pretty much it. Haha.
Sonata lost the engine called JANI
band members leaves the band it happens all the time its not worth of whining anymore
this is just to those guys who keep talking shit!!!!!!!!!!!! sonata will be always sonata but it really hurt to say good bye to jani, so ...... jani .. u where amazing the other guy is great but u.. m ,. well you where just. sonata! misss you?

yes he can he just plays them different style and with different guitar -.-
Watta fak?!!!!!! When Jani left the band??!!!! Does Sonata exist now???? first time I hear this...
too bad that he wil not return to sonata arctica, and if you don't belive me, I can tell you who said that to me, and that was Tony Kakko...
i heard jani is now in cain's offering?!
Is it pronounced "Janey" or "Johny"? Jani is absolutely amazing I hate that he left do we even know why he left?
well, ive seen sonata 2 times, one with jani and one with elias. and in my opinion, they were just as good with elias. its not really "jani's work" as you put it, since tony wrote all the parts (even most of the solos), so it really doesn't matter whos laying down the guitar. jani kicked ass, but im just talking about the big picture, ya know?
