Bonsai: Back to basics - tree 2

  • This video continues my current theme of working with virtually impossible material. I do enjoy the challenge of trying to find harmony from where there was chaos. I make no pretence that the end product is anything but a specimen bonsai, but it is a beginning that can be worked on and improved over the years. Privet species is not given the place that it should have in bonsai. It is a readily available species and very tolerant of all manner of work that it is subjected to and I would fully recommend it as a good choice - especially for enthusiasts new to bonsai.

A real treat to watch . Love the fact that people like yourself still do videos that aren't over edited etc and show the joy of working on a tree .

Have read your books and used them as a bible for bonsai growing over the last thirty five years. Great to see you work on UA-cam, never disappoint Dan

😅Thanks for the video Dan you haven't picked an easy subject to create an acceptable wind SWEPT tree, especially as like me you are plagued with arthritis in the hands, I do like the way you use your tools as alternative to what they are designed for as I like to do, you can call it abusing them but they are to hand so why not use them, the tree now needs time to settle into the style you have created the dead wood could make the tree special over time. You mention snapping branches that happened to me this morning fortunately it still hung on so out came super glue and clamps and I think the branch will be fine it's worked in the past.

    Hi Dan,!

Your a hero Dan dealing with this tree I would have binned it within the first 10 minutes of seeing it. Thank you for persevering with it.

You've given something I would have given up on long ago a lot of interest! I absolutely love it!

I've been cutting down so much privet to clear out a space to make a Japanese Maple garden and pond. After watching this I just might try and turn one of the 3 inch diameter stumps into a bonsai. Yes I am new to bonsai other than one small juniper.
