Gouging is famously rough on hardware. My (highly skilled pipe and boiler welder) instructor would never gouge with his own machine but used a gouging tip on an OA torch. You can gouge on AC but it's not mentioned often. I have 400A Hobart I bought for the cables which works a treat and spares lighter machines. For some gouging artistry IC Weld has some outstanding vids.
