I know it's a running gag in the show but if her story was to happen irl to actual people, I really don't think they'd grow up to be bubbly or funny like her. They'd just be a dull mess who can't find fun in anything, no amount of therapy can fix that.

I could be wrong, but I think the "not impossible but hard" might have been cut from broadcasts or reruns. I don't remember that line. Watching these uncut clips, there's a general pattern of extra "threads" being trimmed off. Some were a little too controversial, while others, like this one, kind of gilded the lily. I think the joke works best without that last part.

just wonder why Phoebe can turn out to be a postive, innocent and caring woman with such bad family situation. Parents got divorced, grew up on streets, no family members or closed relatives who actually cared about her existence. I mean the way her sister Usula acts is more reasonable and explainable. Phoebe is insanely postive and perfectly innocent woman. Lucky for anyone to have her :D

So Phoebe grew up on the streets when she was 14 even though her grandmother was alive? Why didn't the grandmother take care of the girls?

Phoebe said her grandmother was nice to her but 'evil' so I'm guessing she didn't get or want custody, Phoebe said they lived with her step dad after their mom died until he went to prison. Then I'm guessing Phoebe ran away from foster care at 14 (maybe Ursula stayed). Her grandmother might not have been in a position to/want to take care of her at that point or even known she was missing from foster care, some kids fall through the cracks unfortunately.
yeah I adopted two kids myself from the foster care system, some of their own family couldn't keep them, and some other ones didn't want them, including grandparents. It's really sad.
I have asked that question many times. In the episode with the chocolate chip cookies, Phoebe even says that her grandmother was in Hell for all that she'd done to other people, but that she was always very good to Phoebe. And here we see they have a very good relationship. So why was the grandmother AWOL when her daughter died leaving two girls?
There was a time when she met her real father in the show... If she saw the photo why couldn't she recognise her??? There are many flaws in the story.

Phoebe's damn lucky her life went the way it did and she came out of it a fairly well-adjusted adult with good friends and a decent job and, far as the show lets us know, not much real trauma.
