not exactly. while this slug is cool its completely impractical when you consider the cost of these things to make is probably higher than a regular slug and some rifle rounds probably do a better job than this shotgun slug at pretty much everything
the difference is that mass produced slugs are just that mass produced, they have to make allowances for ease of manufacture and such (there are something a big old machine can't do that a human can using hand tools) to make something like this would require extra manufacturing steps (not impossible just expensive) which wouldn't be a good idea for a big company. a single guy in a shed working with hand tools to make a handful of slugs can take more time and work more intricate designs because he doesn't have to worry about time and profit margins also it's easier to quality check a dozen rounds compared to a few thousand where only 1% of them may be checked for defects in any given day
hoot red I mean, these would be pretty expensive to produce, which is most likely why they aren't exactly mass produced. Also, the guy has a PhD in a field that constantly comes into contact with physics, so I'm sure he can do some math and figure out a good shape for something

Well Kalashnikov was originally just a farm equipment engineer who designed the AK-47 and variants. Of course I'm sure a lot of engineers who make weapons get started out in other fields lol but these are definitely cool rounds, better than I expected considering how difficult it is to make rounds that stay on target.

mechanical scales are still mroe acurate than almost all electronic scales. we have one at work that can measure more than a metric ton with a tolerance within a hundred gramms (and adding just one more part would probably make it measure down to the gram if necessary). our new electronic scale has a tolerance of eight kilograms (that's more than sixteen pounds) we use the electronic one still because the mechanical one just takes too long to handle the ammounts we process but it's realyl amazing how technologies that are thousands of years old still outperform the new stuff just in sheer precision, not to mention production quality.

One of my FAVORITE shotgun slugs! Its extremely deadly. I think the flimsy Styrofoam sabos were just good enough to stabilize the projectile before impact. The plastic ones seem to cause problems. Thanks for using the clay as well, that's my favorite targets! You should consider putting it inside a large, clear tote or tub to keep the clay in a contained area for easier cleanup and reuse too.
Wow, if someone took a headshot from one of those expanding rounds, they'd end up with a stump for a head! The temp cavity that sucker made in the ballistic gel WAS obscene.
In USSR any rifled weapon was banned for civilans. So people have to hunt with smoothbore. Thus we have great experience and great variety of shotgun slugs. In fact, this dart was initially designed by Dmitry Shiryaev to provide rifle accuracy for smoothbore shotgun.
Харитон Круглов Not quite correct. My grand dad used to hunt with Mosin (KO-44) rifle, and rifled hunting rifles were generally available as well - TOZ-16/17/18 for example. The thing is that using shotguns were way cheaper, and thats actual reason why they are more popular.
Absolutely fantastic darts from Russian PhD guy - very impressive. As usual, a great video - I enjoy seeing Jeff load the cartridges - unfortunately I'm not a shooter, but I still love to see how things work, so more of that please, (even an explanation of how Jeff works out the load, and maybe even some information on powder) Great shooting from Danny - an excellent addition to the team.
Харитон Круглов Alexey, great work - I found your channel - I'll have a look at it later on, but I'm curious about what lead versions of your darts would do - I'm guessing they would make enormous damage being heavier*, and acting differently on impact, but would the ballistics be vastly different? *(Using a scale I found online which says lead is 1.303 - 1.35 x more massive than casting brass, therefore the lead darts would be between 19.545 - 20.25gms) The scale actually said Brass (casting) 8400-8700 kg/cu.m and Lead 11340 kg/cu.m - I've no idea how true that is, but I'm sure you will. If it's a stupid question, then just say so 😄I don't have a PhD - that's for sure.
Lead by itself is too soft and can't survive G-force when shot. You need to have some hard case around lead. And the first version of this slug were made of hollow brass case and lead cast inside this cavity. But it takes too much effort and time to drill brass out. So I decided to go with solid brass. Aerodynamics is basically the same. Expanding version gives more drag due to flat nose but general trajectory is same.
Харитон Круглов Thanks for the response - I was curious, and even though I can't shoot, I love watching the various solutions that slug designers come up with. Every day is a school day, as they say. Take care. (I'll look forward to seeing your next design)
It doesn't get dirty, it degrades after you melt it down. I wish I was rich enough to afford that gel but it is $160 for a block and $120 for the mold.
Vise Diesel Several people, including myself, offered to order gel for him, normal, or clear, but he refuses! How about we band together, order some bulk gelatin powder, crock pots, and molds, for him? It shouldn't be more than $1000 total. Hell, I called to order ballistic gelatin powder, in 2000, and it was only $700 in bulk. The only problem is, he wouldn't give me his shipping address, as I would have sent it anyways. So, someone would have to "leak" it ;-)
TAOFLEDERMAUS might want to try hitting up clearballistics or another ballistic gel site and see if they would be willing to donate some gel to your channel in exchange for you giving them a shout out. Just a thought.
Great video as always, and you should definitely consider doing more long videos like this as long as you have enough rounds to make it feesable. The videos of homemade rounds are some of my favorites. Just how weird and complex some of the designs are is really intriguing, especially when they work flawlessly like these did.
These are some of the better dart style slugs you have tried out. Darts are, despite their appearance, not the best in super sonic flight, but these seem rather stable, and the accuracy even at longer ranges was rather good.
Alexey does a lot of computer ballistic models on this stuff. It just confuses me but he's able to tweak his designs using those. ua-cam.com/video/LQg2prrYbzM/v-deo.html
Looks like the secret to getting a stable dart round has finally been cracked! Looks like lightweight foam sabots plus thick wadding are the way to go.
This thing is awesome! Almost mass-production worthy.. I'm sure there's improvements to be made for powder load and shortening the length, but I'd buy them!
it would be nice to see some more test with these rounds. they do a impressive amount of damge for being so light. with the fragments and the solid part behind continuing through. if he could rework the packaging or maybe just shorten the slug a hair so they would fit more easily this could be a really nice round. some more long range shots would be nice to like up to 100 yards.
I pledged! I love watching your videos! It make my job go by quicker. I work security and it can get pretty boring and my boss suggested I watch UA-cam
probably the most effective round you've tested in my opinion......you guys should do a revisit to these when you can shoot farther away, seems like they would be just about zeroed at 100m with the consistently high point of impact we saw. I think they are very promising indeed...
You should talk to this guy about partnering up and bringing these slugs into the US, I'm not sure if it's any better than anything else on the market but it does look like they would probably work pretty well against boar. The solid slugs might find use either with the military or police where barriers and/or armor penetration is a concern.
Capitalism Is Best Ism, see - you have all the internet at your disposal in theory and yet your government and corporations made you as ignorant as the people living under authoritarian regimes. That's truly impressive work!
watching this it makes me think of an interesting design for a dart, take the solid dart, then add fragmenting case around it instead of having the point fragment so that when it strikes the core follows through while the case peels off for greater damage making a round useful for hard and soft targets
I wonder how nasty a fiberglass dart would be with a small conical cavity drilled into the tip with a steel cone wedge glued into the cavity. The idea being when it hits, the steel wedge gets driven down the shaft of the dart, forcing non-uniform fragmentation of the glass fibers. My hypothesis is the fiberglass would splinter greatly into a fleshy target, and have almost no penetration. Basically, a very nasty round designed to wound/maim (like a great big middle finger to the Geneva Convention).
Lead is too soft. It gonna collapse from G-force. Even black powder wouldn't help. Aluminum and titanium are too light . In fact for such a small slug even steel is too light. I think copper would be a good choice of material but copper is nasty thing to process.

12:30 does just the tip count as penetration? This is a serious life question.
I love that you inherently get 2 shots out of one round (the 2nd being the wad)
4:14 I love how he is using the free knife to show the damage done to the magazine that's advertising the free knife
2:10 Am I the only person who gets shooting pain from the sound of cutting styrofoam?
It's awesome when "amateurs" make it better than the big companies! Great vid!
It is natural. Because bid companies want profits only. Amateur wants anything but profit.
Огонь!
воды!
This thing is awesome! Almost mass-production worthy.. I'm sure there's improvements to be made for powder load and shortening the length, but I'd buy them!
Stop sniffing the orange paint, crazy old men!❤
RK 043. You're no fun! 🇺🇸😎
Love your work, I'm always grinning by the end.
Tao, one of your better videos. thumbs up...................
thanks!!
Amazing slugs, hat off to Alexey! Nice job on the video guys, but I did miss the lead plate.
I forgot to bring out the lead plate for this shoot
Ha I was on the Enterprise.
it would be nice to see some more test with these rounds. they do a impressive amount of damge for being so light. with the fragments and the solid part behind continuing through. if he could rework the packaging or maybe just shorten the slug a hair so they would fit more easily this could be a really nice round. some more long range shots would be nice to like up to 100 yards.
Always love the videos guys. Awesome rewatching them.
thanks!
*"Just shootin darts down by the cess pool"*
I pledged! I love watching your videos! It make my job go by quicker. I work security and it can get pretty boring and my boss suggested I watch UA-cam
Lol, that's a cool boss!
I like the new shooter. #oldschoolaf
s johnson. Thanks. Yeah, I'm pretty much old school. 🇺🇸😎
Those things are scary accurate! Awesome!
the moment that you see one of your favorite youtubers is a patreon of one of your favorite youtubers.
probably the most effective round you've tested in my opinion......you guys should do a revisit to these when you can shoot farther away, seems like they would be just about zeroed at 100m with the consistently high point of impact we saw. I think they are very promising indeed...
The problem is, we'd probably have to shoot most of them just to get the optics zeroed in and we'd have nothing left to film.
nice
thanks Rob!
nice bulge
You should talk to this guy about partnering up and bringing these slugs into the US, I'm not sure if it's any better than anything else on the market but it does look like they would probably work pretty well against boar. The solid slugs might find use either with the military or police where barriers and/or armor penetration is a concern.
Why do I have to buy rip slugs when I can ask Alexey to make some for me for money of course and send me in Kazakhstan
Probably cheaper!
TAOFLEDERMAUS of course it may be will be cheaper than some cartridges like 223 Rem or 7,62 x39 308 win especially in my country
Radmir Ponomarenko isn't Kazakhstan a brutal oligarchic dictatorship? I thought that non oligarchs were restricted from going online.
Capitalism Is Best Ism, see - you have all the internet at your disposal in theory and yet your government and corporations made you as ignorant as the people living under authoritarian regimes. That's truly impressive work!
Danny's skull bracelet is badass! ☠☠☠☠
watching this it makes me think of an interesting design for a dart, take the solid dart, then add fragmenting case around it instead of having the point fragment so that when it strikes the core follows through while the case peels off for greater damage making a round useful for hard and soft targets
What a mind blowing slug
None of you have finished this yet
I wonder how nasty a fiberglass dart would be with a small conical cavity drilled into the tip with a steel cone wedge glued into the cavity. The idea being when it hits, the steel wedge gets driven down the shaft of the dart, forcing non-uniform fragmentation of the glass fibers.
My hypothesis is the fiberglass would splinter greatly into a fleshy target, and have almost no penetration. Basically, a very nasty round designed to wound/maim (like a great big middle finger to the Geneva Convention).
The dart had a really beautiful spin going threw that rifled choke!!!
Stefano Fumi
Not a choke. That is a FULLY rifled barrel.
Danny AKA Triker Red Yes I realized that when I wrote it.
Stefano Fumi
👍🏻. 🇺🇸😎
It's be interesting to see this same dart milled out of different metals : (steel, aluminum, lead, titanium, etc.) what a great design
Lead is too soft. It gonna collapse from G-force. Even black powder wouldn't help.
Aluminum and titanium are too light . In fact for such a small slug even steel is too light. I think copper would be a good choice of material but copper is nasty thing to process.
Gun related YT channels earn 70 cents for every dollar a SJW/ clickbait YT channel gets. Now that's the real Pay Gap injustice I want investigated
Ha, I don't think it is even 70%!
That is pretty sad. Makes me wish Full30.com was a bigger success than it has been.
ChopStick Pony, poop related YT channels earn even less than that. Poop eating community is quite outraged by that!
Really nice when a good amount of projectiles are sent, gives margin for more tests.
Yes, it gave us a lot of options, but it takes a long time to film so we were waiting for a cooler day to film these on.
Looks like you chose just a PERFECT day! :) Thanks!
those are some really impressive rounds, I live in NZ and have no idea about gun laws, but they should sell these!
lol
Oh god my ears when you cut that foam with a box cutter.
The skin on my back started crawling when you did it.
