You know damn well literally not a single human person on this godless rock would ever in their entire life consider using a product sponsored in a video because every single sponsor on this worthless hellsite is some of the absolute worst, most obvious scams ever made and a completely useless cancer that NEEDS to die. You have to stop being greedy NOW before it's too late
The Resident Evil series will always top my survival horror fix, with 4 really stepping up. The added tension comes with enemies that you know are out there and can end you with one slice, yet you have to advance and face them and keep them at bay while hoping they don't get too close.
I love Phantasmagoria! It’s a truly disturbing game, to this very day. You can really see why the game was controversial back then. It features some really intense scenes of violence and sadism. But the scariest part of the game is how it makes you feel just as trapped and terrified as the main character. The fmv’s and graphics were very impressive at the time, and have undoubtedly aged, but I think the look and atmosphere of the game truly adds to the experience. There is something very eerie about the 3d backgrounds.
I have to say that Alien: Isolation is one of the scariest/most tense games I've played. Even after playing it through several times I still scream in various parts... which makes my hubby laugh at me. ☺ Loved F.E.A.R. and SOMA as well.
The evil within gave me literal nightmares every time I played it when I would go to sleep I have bad dreams about me being Sebastian and being killed in horrible ways
Eternal Darkness being #1 was a pleasant surprise. I've always thought it handled Lovecraftian themes better than any other video game (although obviously creature designs pale in comparison to those other games)
Until dawn is one of the most inventive horror games of all time Inventive gameplay elements Insanely excellent plot twists Diverse and memorable characters Most unparalleled atmosphere
Another nightmare fuel game is Imscared. Not only the game is freaky on its own, but it also violates the fourth wall and starts tampering with your computer (but not in a malware kind of way). And I also literally had nightmares based on this game.
I feel like supermassive games have a lot of creepy games. The storyline might be wack sometimes but hen environment and creature designs are always on point
Dead Space messed me up so much that despite enjoying it and the critical acclaim for Dead Space 2, it took me about a year after it launched for me to get into the "right mood" to begin playing it.
Sanitarium is a masterpiece! Also Harvester and Phantasmagoria... I miss 90's adventures sometimes. Also Dark Seed would be in this list too. Very disturbing storyline with H.R. Giger's illustrations.
The Evil Within continues to be my favorite horror videogame. I think it should've been higher on the list since it's absolutely terrifying. I know it's not the most amazing game in the world or unique but I absolutely love it and everything about the 1st game.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! Back in 1990, there was a PC game called 'Elvira: Mistress of the Dark'. That game was quite scary back to play on a 286 computer with a VGA card/monitor and the SoundBlaster installed. 🤣
Condemned remains the only game that I have ever abandoned due to sheer terror. The department store mannequins finally broke me. I noped out of that game when some of them started moving. 9:20
played untill dawn recently and sure it's a scary game in parts but what scared me the most was that badger/raccoon/possum thing that jumps out of the cupboard when looking for deodorant spray.
@WatchMojo This is the 'first time I agreed with your, No. 1 pick 😆 Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (2002) This game needs to be updated or a sequel needs to happen 😜 It's a very long since I played this game 🤪
I loved the suffering series. It got me into playing horror shooters in the first place! It was also the first game to give me an adrenaline rush from being scared and nervous as well as excited and curious.
Clocktower 3 was a pretty good game too, especially the part with the little ghost girl who lost her father during the war and tried to remember a melody from his watch. And the crazy hammer ghost that murdered her is creepy as heck.
i only played clocktower 1 ps and that was pretty freaky at the time, getting chased by a man with giant scissors was pure nightmare fuel a game released back in 1996
Five Nights Of Freddy's franchise never fails tho. It haunts me everytime I finished a series. To be exact, each series gets scarier and nightmarier. Especially with those jumpscares. Makes you want to throw your hearts out.
@@Saddonghussein I’ve heard of the first two but not the last one. Also how exactly do you know he doesn’t know about the franchises you have mentioned?
The Evil Within and Dead Space Series and Until Dawn and Alien Isolation and Outlast and Resident Evil and Silent Hill 2 and P.T. (Canceled) has given me the most nightmares on the PS3 or on the PS4
In Until Dawn, the main evil was the wendigos. The psycho on the other hand, was the the brother Josh (I believe that was the name) had some natural, mental disorder and going off his drugs, which later revealed in the game, let him go nuts by somewhat torturing his other siblings and friends while dealing with the much more greater threat at hand.
If you liked Inside you should check out Darq and both of the Little Nightmares games. I'm actually surprised neither of them made the list. Visage is pretty gnarly too!!
The Evil Within games freaked me out so much that I made a rule for myself making it so I don’t play Horror Video Games before going to bed. Call of Cthulhu is also pretty creepy.
Until Dawn was decent, but hard for me to play because my hands constantly shake so I had to redo and set my controller down, until opening I liked, but zombies not so much, scariest for me was playing Silent Hill 2 as a kid. The first encounter with pyramid head made me scream and have to pause to calm down. It was the first game I ever beat completely by myself, I was proud. Lol. So I love the series and have half of a Silent Hill sleeve done so far. I was absolutely crushed when Silent Hills was cancelled, the graphics looked so good and I was excited to see a Boondock Saint!! The F.e.a.r series was good too, gave me some jumps.
OA I was hoping for Until Dawn to be at number one but still I think it should’ve been Dead Space I actually think that Until Dawn was eve more scarier with those windigoes.
No mention of F.E.A.R? That first game was way scarier then most on that list. Even when those cheesy games like Harvester came out, they weren't scary at all.
Funny, you went back to System Shock 2 but not to Thief: The Dark Project or Thief II: The Metal Age. Or even Shalebridge Cradle as an honorable mention in Thief III.
100 percent agree with your statement about Emily from Until Dawn, I could not stand her in the game and especially when she shows her true colours by trying to get Ashley killed. Non of the other protagonists tried to get the others killed
I tried to save her as Matt coz he's a good guy and it's what he would've done and instead it caused his death. I was gutted, fuck Emily. I almost shot her as Mike but thought "nope, mike wouldn't do that shit either"
Resident Evil, Until Dawn, Outlast, Slender The Eight Pages, Five Nights At Freddy's 4, I've played them and I've watched other people play them and still they scare the 💩 out of me.
I'm definitely gonna have to mention one that's technically not a horror game. Remember Nier Automata? Great game, but if you wanna know how that world got so desolate, take a look at the Drakengard trilogy. Specifically the first one, which I would describe as The End of Evangelion meets Dynasty Warriors and Ace Combat, at least in terms of gameplay. You play as a few characters with special powers and really screwed up backstories. The stakes of the story revolve around the potential emergence of titanic entities that will gradually destroy humankind if allowed free. And given the disturbing things these "Watchers" do, death may be a merciful release. SPOILERS But there is a price to pay if you do succeed in preventing that, and it may be too high to bear personally. And I do say IF because there are multiple endings, all of which are some form of tragic. The canon ending sees the dragon and the hero going into a future Japan. Their sudden appearance there, even after destroying the main threat and being destroyed by a confused military, causes a slow yet inevitable fallout that eliminates civilization. World ending threats are nothing new, don't get me wrong, but I'll bet you're not prepared for mental illnesses that endanger those around you. As someone with a mental illness myself, I can say that such aspects are not to be taken lightly at all. I cannot say what these characters' illnesses are, they are really dark, but you could look it up; if you do suffer from one of most of their issues, I really suggest that you research what can help with such urges. And the music is unsettling and intense even during the first level, which should set the mood quite well.
Alien in my personal opinion should have been ranked number 3 instead of the jhorror just in the case that it always kept you on your toes the alien could do anything it never was repeated and you were always alone, number 1 should have been Visage a game I personally enjoyed since it gave me several amazing jumpscares and always kept me wondering where the creatures were and what was coming next not to mention some super disturbing cutscenes

These nightmare fuel video games have a lot of potential to make a huge impact. They’ve become, in some ways, influential.
This video has some of my favourite horror games ever. I remember watching UA-camrs like “theRadBrad” play these.

Siren 1 or 2 deserve a spot on this list . But I’m happy with a shout out to my fav horror series Fatal frame
Dead Space messed me up so much that despite enjoying it and the critical acclaim for Dead Space 2, it took me about a year after it launched for me to get into the "right mood" to begin playing it.
The original Clock Tower for Super Famicom proves that even with 16 bits and 2D graphics, you can still make an incredible horror game.
Honourable mention for Ecstatica on PC. I still remember the jump scares from the werewolf
Oh until dawn yeah that game was terrifying
Daniel Ouellette OA that’s the first terrifying game I’ve played with those windigoes.
Another good one is "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream". Never played it, but some of what I've seen from it has kept me up at night.
