Thanks for the video, not a lot of instruction on the forester MTs across youtube for these years. Tackling this project on my 2017 premium manual this month.

I struggled to find the capacity of gearbox/front diff, so just relied on the dipstick. Months later, and I have not had to add a drop more gear oil to it. I knew this video would help seeings how few videos I could find on it. Super easy to do, and cheap. 👍

@@OutsideTheTargetDemographic I did this job yesterday and referenced your video. Ultimately, 2.9 quarts drained, we put in 3 and kept checking the dipstick. That seems like the right number w/these cars. Already improving the driving experience. Thanks again

@@aaronmatulevich454 Jazzed that my video helped at least one other person out there. Thanks for the feedback! 🍻 I didn't notice any change in noise of driving, but I imagine you would experience both if the fluid failed. 😑

Gear lube seems to me the strongest smelling of all the fluid smells from a vehicle, so the smell isn't a bad thing and that color looks fine, amberish and clearish is better than dark and milky. Good ideas and nice video explanation.

First experience with gear oil. It's smell was....particular and lingering. Now I know what it smells like for when someone's car in the parking lot has a puddle under it.
Thanks for the view, comment, and compliment, friend. 👋

@@OutsideTheTargetDemographic You're welcome, what's funny is I still don't know to this day if I like the smell or hate it, but it is distinctly gear lube, nothing smells like it.

@@FloridaDeere Agreed. It's got like a sweet smell that isn't unpleasant, but as an oil it doesn't burn or evaporate away, and you'll smell it for a while after using it. Things you learn. 🤷

Great vid dude, I am going to tackle this on my 2.0 Diesel 6 Speed Forester soon 👍🏻.
You guys really need to adopt the Metric System though, working in Oz’s and Quartz and shit is so confusing compared to working in denominations of 10 🤯

@@dayledonne8272 as an American who lived 13 years in Europe I agree. The metric system is superior in almost every way. When it comes to doing all the work, I was largely learning as I was recording but if I had to do it again I could do it all in about 2 hours time maybe an hour and a half. Good luck you shouldn't have any problems with it. 😁

    ~800mL Rear Differential
    ~2.8L Front Differential/Gearbox
Just have 5 quarts on hand for a manual transmission Gen 4 Subaru, and keep the remnants for topping it off or return one. This project was agrivating for me, but the moral of the story: don't trust the internet, DO trust the calibrated dip stick. 👍

Great vid! But um still a little confused. Where's the front diff? Does that use the T70 torx?

Hi friend! Thanks for the comment/compliment.
I did this a few months ago, but as I recall, only the manual transmissions will have a T70, the CVT transmission uses a different drain and all.
In the manual setup, the front differential uses the same oil reservoir as the front diff. SOOOOO, when you drain the T70 torx fitting, and refill with gear oil, you just did BOTH the front diff AND transmission. 👍
The T70 drains the old gear oil out, and then you refill the tranmission/front diff with new 75W90 gear oil, checking the dipstick until you get it full enough.

The front diff and the manual transmission are both in one unit. When you change the transmission oil you are also changing the diff. Hope this helps I had the same question.
