The thing with Androids in N:R and Detroit become human is that it's never explained WHY the androids were created with emotions. If the Androids in Nier didn't have emotions, the problem of deserters wouldn't exist. In Detroit, Deviants wouldn't be a problem if they didn't have emotions. Whoever created them the Androids in each respective universe just thought "Yeah let's give those robot servants feelings, it would never backfire."
Well for combat, emotions would be benifitial, since anger and comraderie would make them more inclined/motivated to win. In detroit become human, it would most likely be to make the robots feel authentic to people, rather than just robots

Just to recap, 9S has: 1. Lost 21O, after being forced to fight her 2. Lost 2B, right infront of his face 3. Been forced to fight clones of his android waifu in a sick parody of her returning from the dead 4. Learned that YoRHA was meant to die form the beginning. 5. Learned his hot android waifu was just there to keep him from getting too smart and forced to murder him when that happens. 6. Learned that humans, the people they were meant to protect with their lives, are all dead. All the sacrifices they've been forced to make have been all to continue a farce. 7. Come crashing down to the unavoidable conclusion that his life is completely meaningless and has gone completely insane from realizing so. The "S" part of his name wasn't Scanner. Its clearly for "Suffering". The worst part of this is he was just a genuinely optimistic kid who wanted to make the world a better place, and the world gave him the biggest of middle fingers for his trouble.
Rei Wow I think you nailed in on the head with that conclusion, though you did forget to mention that he was really lonely because before 2B, he went on missions alone and never really had a friend to talk to. I was one of those players who got really attached to 9S given the circumstances of the game's world and how he was like a breath of fresh air for being so endearingly human when he speaks. Route C/D crashed down on his hopes and dreams, and I don't think I've ever encountered a character so tragic and so undeserving of everything he went through. Truly an unforgettable character.

Man, that 9S's screaming voice after 2B death is so epic. The true fact is 9S's voice actor didn't even know that 2B would call him Nines. He even cried aloud at the recording room. These screaming voices are emotionally juiced out and these facts made this as the best game ever.
Hearing 9S's crying in 3:27 gradually and slowly turning to laughter was so sad and scary for me to witness, the guy was light hearted but slowly and eventually lost all his innocence to the darkness and became this psycho. Whoever was 9S English voice actor he really did an amazing job.

People hate him for the awful decisions he makes and his refusal to even attempt to get an understanding of the situation. He literally becomes an insane lunatic at the end, so it’s not that absurd that people won’t like him. Although I always thought he was pretty annoying.

I think one of the greatest things about 9S' arc is that, you play through with him and experience his pain. Normally in other games, most people who go insane are the villain, but not here. You have a choice to play as the force who went through all this shit in the final battle.

Spoilers: But you can choose to accompany Adam and Eve's consciousness which the Red Twins have access too which is somewhat of redemption for his biggest flaw: his hatred for Machines despite the obvious fact that they can feel and think, which Adam and Eve show so well.
I've seen quite a few people claim 9S started hating her after he started going crazy and after he learned the truth. I disagree. Rather than hate her, I think he is just very upset and holds a lot of resentment towards her. I think he feels more confused than anything. He hates the lies, not 2B herself. He loves her. Losing 2B and then on top of that being told the truth by A2, he couldn't mentally handle it and in his unstable state he could only think of her and you can tell from that one part he wanted to keep all those memories he had with her because he loves her so much, but it is too painful for him. I hope there is a sequel or something and we can see them together again. I know the ending(s) are sort of optimistic. (Spoilers) One ending 9s takes on the body of a machine. Another ending A2 sacrifices herself and cures him and the pods rebuild them and restore them with the hope that they'll change the future and not keep repeating the same mistakes.
T S Have you seen ending E? It's very hopeful, though it is very difficult to achieve, and it implies that you'll have to keep working hard to get a happy ending. Who knows if Yoko Taro will ever actually release another game with them in it
9S never hated her, he actually adores her and think of her as the most important person in his life, what motivates his violent actions toward the 2B clones isn't hate but possessiveness, especially after what happened in Soul Box, the memories of 2B are the last thing that he has and from his point of view the machines are perverting her image by throwing those poor imitations of her, he is definetly angry with the circumstances of their painfull cycle thought. Also, i don't doubt that Yoko Taro is going to make a sequel to Automata, but don't expect 2B, 9S and A2 back, as far as he is concerned, their characther arc are over and bringing then back would be like repeating himself (he has stated before that he doesn't like to bring the same protagonist for more than one game), so their destinies after the first are up to you, best case scenario he might make a reference to then but nothing concrete.

Ending E is a bit unconclusive. We know that in script5 he woke up and he is OK, but we dont really know what happens after that.
There are scripts from the nier automata concert that showed 5 more stories about 2b and 9s before the action of the game and some during the game, and you can see that they both knew about each other, ie 2b killing 9s and 9s knowing 2b as 2e. If the game didnt break your heart enough these scrips will. His love for her was no lie. When he watched her die, it was as sincere as you can get. He hated her for having to kill him but he actually did love her and considered her someone close between family and a lover. This is canon. There is ground for the “****” to mean both kill and... you know. Jackass says that androids derive pleasure from fighting (or to put it another way: they enjoy all the killing). That’s learned from doing a few side quests with her.
NieR Automata handled 2B's death and 9S' fall into insanity so well it made me, the player, feel emotions. 2B was a badass that I played with, journeyed with, massacred machines with, I went on multiple epic quests with her, etc. Then to just have her taken from me like that... I legitimately felt empty and sad about her death. Then the game kept shoving the memory of 2B in my face; Having me fight to keep her memories, have everyone remind me of her death, hearing her final words and last message, even forcing me to KILL her over and over; Constantly forcing me to remember that she is DEAD and I can't ever play with her again. It's so tragic; I can sympathize with 9S. On top of that the ultimate truth was one of the biggest mind-blowing plot twists I've ever witnessed. I still think about how even when Humanity is gone, history still tries to repeat itself even though there is no purpose as life is meaningless. No other form of entertainment has ever made me feel such vast emotions other than video games like these.

The fact that he's just a little boy and has to go through all sorts of pain and suffering like this makes me think these scences are truly horrifying.
On the first two playthroughs i laughed at Eve's corny lines about losing his brother. But as I saw 9S's fall from Grace in the third playthrough it really made me reconsider how I felt about Adam and Eve
i started feeling bad when in 9s's playthrough you see a flashback of adam and eve where they read books and the bonding experience was like that one cool big brother you had

It is kind of symbolic that 9S falls into the canyon where machines commit suicide. It kind of says that this is where the 9S we knew died and the insane cinnamon role we know was born. as 9S falls, so does his sanity, and his reality around him.
I always wonder why A2 doesn't just tell him that it was a mercy kill, since she was already infected? Granted, he might have still lost his shit, but it doesn't hurt to try.

His JP actor sounds too "generic anime" for my tastes. There's something so deeply emotional about his speech in the English. His physco laughter and crying really hits me hard. Like I'm sorry but his JP scream is so gargley and weird. He also sounds a bit too young when he's talking just normal which makes me feel weird- If I'm gonna have a character look as feminine as 9S I'd like him to at least feel like an adult.
Daylight Dev it's was for the first time I've actually chosen the English voice over the Japanese one. Especially for 9S. And as you said, these emotional scenes really showed how much of a competent voice actor this dude is.
I felt so heartbroken when 9S fell into insanity and suffering after 2B's death and god props to the English voice actor. He did 9S voice so good that it gave me chills
So first battle is some part of his erased/hidden memory in which 2B was ordered to kill 9S but in the end she failed and got killed? Then 9S crouched over her dead body and started yelling "They're mine! My memories, you hear me!?" and after all 2B's task was to delete his memories over and over. Maybe at this point he discovered the truth about 2B. It is possible as 9S once almost managed to defeat 2B what we know from concert script.
The saddest part of this whole video is that if you weren't connected to the network, you wouldn't see the corpses of androids on the floor before 9S's rampage in the Soul Box. *Those androids were the players that sacrificed their save data. :(*

TheBlackDemon1996 It's probably a way to signify serious injury in battle. Red it a very noticeable color so when designing the Androids they were probably going for accuracy and efficiency. Similarly tears were evolved to signify emotions to other humans without speech. If you see red on your companion, it means trouble.

When I play 9s after 2Bs death, it really feels like having a heartbreak. The ambiance of the game is so different just like what we feel in the real world. Everything is quiet but you have this emotion inside you that is eating you alive. After waking up beside the twins, the game doesn't give you a mission. You just have no purpose. So you wonder around, trying to kill every machine life forms you came across until it triggers the story mission.
"what do i do now? ive got no one to love and no one to kill" anyway 9s sees that black entity in his mind as 2b because its 2b who kept destroying his memories. also the bodies on the floor are also from the times she killed him.
I was thinking earlier about how 9S looks really similar to Gojo from the series Jujutsu Kaisen, but in all honesty, at least in terms of pain, he’s definitely on Yuji’s level, if not more.
whenever the game plays The Sound of the End - Quiet, then you know some shit is about to either go down, or has gone down. Amazing theme. I wish I had a list of all the times that that song plays so I could see all of them.
9S will always be terrifying towards the end of the game. Combat models were designed with offensive tactics in mind, but predictable as their combat is copied across all models. But scanner models like 9S? Defensive and evasive. always meant to avoid conflict as much as possible. So what happens when someone like 9S realize they have nothing left to lose or live for? They become irrational, unpredictable, unstoppable. They become what all machine and androids fear. In what little time they have left on this world, They become human.
although people know my waifu 2b and a2 more, my opinion my boy 9s is the main character of this game. had most tragic life and big change from funny, enthusiastic and spirit character to cold, anger, and berserker. He is my favorite character in nier series after brother NieR

I think one of the greatest things about 9S' arc is that, you play through with him and experience his pain. Normally in other games, most people who go insane are the villain, but not here. You have a choice to play as the force who went through all this shit in the final battle.
Live A Live also has that.
You get to see how Odio turned into the villain.
You literally have no choice but to choose A2 at the end and put him down...

I've seen quite a few people claim 9S started hating her after he started going crazy and after he learned the truth. I disagree. Rather than hate her, I think he is just very upset and holds a lot of resentment towards her. I think he feels more confused than anything. He hates the lies, not 2B herself. He loves her. Losing 2B and then on top of that being told the truth by A2, he couldn't mentally handle it and in his unstable state he could only think of her and you can tell from that one part he wanted to keep all those memories he had with her because he loves her so much, but it is too painful for him. I hope there is a sequel or something and we can see them together again. I know the ending(s) are sort of optimistic. (Spoilers) One ending 9s takes on the body of a machine. Another ending A2 sacrifices herself and cures him and the pods rebuild them and restore them with the hope that they'll change the future and not keep repeating the same mistakes.
T S Have you seen ending E? It's very hopeful, though it is very difficult to achieve, and it implies that you'll have to keep working hard to get a happy ending.
Who knows if Yoko Taro will ever actually release another game with them in it
It would appear 2B and 9S definitely deserve a happy ending. And perhaps an anime or both or any combination thereof
9S never hated her, he actually adores her and think of her as the most important person in his life, what motivates his violent actions toward the 2B clones isn't hate but possessiveness, especially after what happened in Soul Box, the memories of 2B are the last thing that he has and from his point of view the machines are perverting her image by throwing those poor imitations of her, he is definetly angry with the circumstances of their painfull cycle thought.
Also, i don't doubt that Yoko Taro is going to make a sequel to Automata, but don't expect 2B, 9S and A2 back, as far as he is concerned, their characther arc are over and bringing then back would be like repeating himself (he has stated before that he doesn't like to bring the same protagonist for more than one game), so their destinies after the first are up to you, best case scenario he might make a reference to then but nothing concrete.

Ending E is a bit unconclusive. We know that in script5 he woke up and he is OK, but we dont really know what happens after that.
There are scripts from the nier automata concert that showed 5 more stories about 2b and 9s before the action of the game and some during the game, and you can see that they both knew about each other, ie 2b killing 9s and 9s knowing 2b as 2e. If the game didnt break your heart enough these scrips will. Here is something from the script that shows they both knew what they needed to do but they still did it because they wanted to be together:
2B (narration): Even if the pain of killing 9S is the sin I must bear.
9S (narration): Even if the joy of meeting 2B is my reason to live.
2B (narration): I'll still resist.
9S (narration): I'll keep fighting.
2B and 9S (narration): Even if that means ...
2B and 9S (narration): Going against God.

NieR Automata handled 2B's death and 9S' fall into insanity so well it made me, the player, feel emotions.
2B was a badass that I played with, journeyed with, massacred machines with, I went on multiple epic quests with her, etc. Then to just have her taken from me like that... I legitimately felt empty and sad about her death.
Then the game kept shoving the memory of 2B in my face; Having me fight to keep her memories, have everyone remind me of her death, hearing her final words and last message, even forcing me to KILL her over and over; Constantly forcing me to remember that she is DEAD and I can't ever play with her again. It's so tragic; I can sympathize with 9S.
On top of that the ultimate truth was one of the biggest mind-blowing plot twists I've ever witnessed. I still think about how even when Humanity is gone, history still tries to repeat itself even though there is no purpose as life is meaningless.
No other form of entertainment has ever made me feel such vast emotions other than video games like these.
Yeah it really does make you as the player feel genuine emotion along with the characters 9S as you play with him

On the first two playthroughs i laughed at Eve's corny lines about losing his brother. But as I saw 9S's fall from Grace in the third playthrough it really made me reconsider how I felt about Adam and Eve
i started feeling bad when in 9s's playthrough you see a flashback of adam and eve where they read books and the bonding experience was like that one cool big brother you had
Also considering you the player were the one who taught them violence in the first place since the moment Adam was born, unless you attack him first, he wont ever touch you

9S is the best character I've ever seen in a video game, his reverse character arc is absolutely amazing.
It is kind of symbolic that 9S falls into the canyon where machines commit suicide. It kind of says that this is where the 9S we knew died and the insane cinnamon role we know was born. as 9S falls, so does his sanity, and his reality around him.

Daylight Dev it's was for the first time I've actually chosen the English voice over the Japanese one. Especially for 9S. And as you said, these emotional scenes really showed how much of a competent voice actor this dude is.

I felt so heartbroken when 9S fell into insanity and suffering after 2B's death and god props to the English voice actor. He did 9S voice so good that it gave me chills
So first battle is some part of his erased/hidden memory in which 2B was ordered to kill 9S but in the end she failed and got killed? Then 9S crouched over her dead body and started yelling "They're mine! My memories, you hear me!?" and after all 2B's task was to delete his memories over and over. Maybe at this point he discovered the truth about 2B. It is possible as 9S once almost managed to defeat 2B what we know from concert script.

TheBlackDemon1996 It's probably a way to signify serious injury in battle. Red it a very noticeable color so when designing the Androids they were probably going for accuracy and efficiency. Similarly tears were evolved to signify emotions to other humans without speech. If you see red on your companion, it means trouble.

When I play 9s after 2Bs death, it really feels like having a heartbreak. The ambiance of the game is so different just like what we feel in the real world. Everything is quiet but you have this emotion inside you that is eating you alive.
After waking up beside the twins, the game doesn't give you a mission. You just have no purpose. So you wonder around, trying to kill every machine life forms you came across until it triggers the story mission.
Every time they emphasize that scanner models are not built for combat they don't mean it in a physical sense. Models like 9S cant handle it mentally.
That voice acting was so damn good. I could feel that emotion in my heart.

9S will always be terrifying towards the end of the game.
Combat models were designed with offensive tactics in mind, but predictable as their combat is copied across all models.
But scanner models like 9S? Defensive and evasive. always meant to avoid conflict as much as possible.
So what happens when someone like 9S realize they have nothing left to lose or live for?
They become irrational, unpredictable, unstoppable.
They become what all machine and androids fear.
In what little time they have left on this world, They become human.
although people know my waifu 2b and a2 more, my opinion my boy 9s is the main character of this game. had most tragic life and big change from funny, enthusiastic and spirit character to cold, anger, and berserker. He is my favorite character in nier series after brother NieR
