The Buttholes and Lee Scratch Perry? While Mark is focal point we should appreciate all the contributers to The Fall ,they would agree the biggest contributes were the minority faithfull audience......as in 50,000 Fall fans can't be wrong........The way he takes the piss out of King Crimson etc biggest simple purest laughs going. As Bernard Manning the controversial but now underground comedian said....' I don't discrimate,I ll tell jokes about anyone. What I feel is really underated is their massive visual legacy...Streets of Salford immortalised with super eight.well before the days of MTV and t internet.

Court of the and the rest is great ..joy Division yeah..I get it . the stripped bareness of the track is cool.....and musical monotime/ tone... In s way over forty years ago....after Sid killed Nancy springen then himself nothin hit the spot . We wondered if sham 69 would replace it but were quickly minded of the moronic when our gang got battered by kersal lads on the landslide footbridge....while they sang if the kids were united. After that The Fall spread but in lefteild secrecy . It was easier to get in a party full of free drugs n beer in Wilmslow that bump into Mark / fall. When I met him in some scan house in Prestwich I was just tagging along with a class a scorer . Did not recognise him ,thought he was another half jock skinny speed freak. My mate got his drugs and ten minutes later we were off, over the mushroom feild and back to bowler vale. This will sound weird . As an old sound engineer....only till the other year have my ears had the patience to give to wade through the extensive legacy of their work. I have IGNORED the music muso scene since getting involved. After a gig I'd go home and listen to silence. I was a bit pissed off to find that 'what about us: was about Shipman! My mum's old doctor in Dukinfeild.

Fall ..is how they stayed true to their class and roots.....which is why they never got famous like Maurice the jewb who used Johny Marr . They sprung out of bedsit Land,experimental working class Carlos Castendsd,trying coedine linctus,valium,speed,pot etc to assist the magical journeys. Mark could of easily hit the big time with one single and fcked off to l.a. but stayed in his humble Ness to be s true commited artist...like many condemned to relative obscurity and poverty. Like John Cooper Clarke a bug quality was his normal accent. We could relate to em ,rathet than Shakespeare's coughing. This creative deadland between the hippy die off and totp culture was the musical purgurtory or stasis in which Mark started his shit. He knew about BBC peado's ,masonry ,as in Lucifer over Lancashire well before the net ,this is often ignored. Under his chip eating Manchester drawl was philosophy and high art ,mixed with a brick in his hand should you ever deny the poor to rise. Bury.....great track . Lots of stuff goes underated. The visuals of their stuff ... well before video cameras were available to the plebs is amazing,an historical record from Lightbowne rd to bury new rd. The landslide and old red brick Manchester. King Crimson had Adrian Belew on guitar and Bill Bruford on drums around that time. I saw them in Guildford CivicHall in 82. They were fucking fantastic. I love the Fall & Mark E Smith and I so wish he was still with us. This is Thee Essence of The Fall

amazing! the artwork is presumably a poster for the gig, made by a fan? I really think that 'De Stijl' and MES's weird kind of Expressionism is a pretty jarring combination... and while I'm at it, I don't like the colours. and tbh i hate de stijl, the dutch
The artwork was my thing back in the day, if you check out my channel you'll find a bunch of live performances by the FALL with my "covers" for the shows.
Don't know about the artwork,one of his sister's painted and some famous painters did some covers for free. I do think the artwork and videos of the fall are very undervalued . A sort of anti album theme ,a rejection if the hippy concept albums with rich trippy artwork ,like Yes etc. Collaged scraps litter lots of their album art.
