I think the motion gesture thing is really cool. There's something useful in inspiration with new tools. That said, I'm not sure how well a performer could execute moves the same each time, and for some music that isn't useful. Once you get past the visual aspect, you aren't performing a sound that's all that unique to lots of other controllers people likely already have. I guess we'll see how much it actually adds to a production when a listener can't see the performer.
I agree with the consistency issue you brought up... On paper controlling 6 dimensions centralized around 1 hand means that the Airwave largely exceeds what could otherwise be achieved using XY pads, faders or knobs. An XY pad and 2 foot pedals can achieve 4 dimensions of control while keeping 1 hand free for playing but that would require multiple devices so there's a substantial advantage with what Roli is offering. The problem that I see though is the inevitable issues with latency, combining and accidentally triggering gestures. I would prefer an XY pad and 2 foot pedals because of their reliability and snappy responsiveness. These points of contention could be overcome if Roli's Airwave was refined enough, but realistically I don't think that's likely to happen because the engineering challenges implied with this technology appear to be so substantial.
@@alexbreyer6921 The substantial latency would come from the hand gestures detection mechanism itself, as opposed to the data transmission latency that the Airwave motion detection system would have gathered through USB-MIDI as that latency can arguably be considered as "acceptable" in isolation. Just by looking at the video demo shown, It can already be seen that the overall input latency of the motion detection system is already in the ballpark of 20-30ms, which makes it effectively unusable for applications other than basically creating movement in the sustain stage of sounds, which is what happens to be shown in the video demo. In my opinion this severely restricts the appeal of the system, even though in theory the idea of the Airwave system is very powerful.
Shout out to the legend Kris Nicholson in the back who dropped in for the demo. Roil really came through with the two of these together. Awesome demo. True Sound and light magic
That question is answered at 4:03. Airwave sends MIDI CC, which can be mapped individually to whatever you want - such as Serum‘s parameters or macros.
It says that it has full plunge depth and semi-weighted keys. Does it really feel like a piano keyboard, or it is just better than the lumi, but not like a piano?
@@Asa-xp8jd Just better ok? To feel like a piano is so difficult to achieve. What we say is regarding the Keybed. I have tons of Synths that has better keybed than Roli. Only trying each one. But I liked the technology and the new keyboard format. I had a Lumi that I sold because of the keys. Hated.
@@TierHarribel MK is better. I tell you. Lumi is more an experimental product. If you really would like to have a better keybed, take the new NI MK3. I have one 61 and one 88 new model. They made it right.
Really cool, and I was impressed with the price for the piano/air wave combo - was expecting at least $1500. Wasn’t expecting to pre order it… but I couldn’t help myself.
This would be really nice if you could integrate it with Eurorack... have CV and gate outputs on the back that could be configured with the software... but I don't think that's what they're going for.
@@DonaldDuck-i2e no, but I've just been patiently waiting without messaging them (yet). But good to hear its a general issue so it's not just mine that got lost in the mail 😂
If it’s anything like the Lumo keys , it’s downfall is you need a Mac to change the key visualisation , they can’t be arsed to make an iOS app . It’s an expensive system when the decent sounds are all expensive apps
Who can tell me more about the piano m? Is the keybed comparable to flagship midi keyboards? Does it actually feel good? Is it clicky? What do the buttons over on the left do?
Remarkable: the demonstrator always stops playing both hands when the airwave must kick in. Still issues with the way the data would be interpreted if the right hand would keep playing?
Thank you for stopping by and providing some coverage for the ROLI Airwave. You couldn't have picked a better demonstrator - Heen is the 🐐 !

@ Is it only wireless? A wired device would have same latency as any other controller.

Great design on the new controller keyboard. Also, nice to have a repurposed Theramin controller. 🎹😄
This is really great if you need to waft your farts away while performing without anyone noticing
Beer through Nose......though I can only wipe that away! LOL
Incredible 🔊🤯

Magnificent
Oh the D-Beam is back
The Keybed is much better than the Roli Lumi. I tested at Namm last Friday. I liked it a lot.

That is what Roland basically had with their (widely hated/loved/ridiculed) D-beam, but forgot to think about the potential it had.
Similar ideas but different underlying technology. This is more akin to the Xbox Kinect or LEAP hand gesture mapping.
Dont forget Alesis Air FX controller back in the 90's... with 3 axis of control.

Coool!!!
Cool, very impressive.
How was the feel of the keybed?
The Lumi Keys didn’t go ever well during launch so I hope this is a big improvement to work with that learning software they have.

Show wind, brass and guitar articulations.
And pitch, glides, vibrato, trem, etc..
Just adding a layer is childsplay
And the light should get brighter with increased aftertouch.

what if I need a pitch bend?
