The Evolution (and Devolution) of Track Visuals in Mario Kart Games
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лип 2024
- I'll be going over how Mario Kart has improved the visual quality of it's tracks over time, as well as voice some concerns over the recent dip in quality with the Booster Course Pass.
"that room for improvement is still up for rent" is the best line I've heard in a while and I'm definitely stealing it.
lol thanks, feel free to!
Some of the DLC tracks look great like 3DS Rainbow Road, Maple Treeway and Ninja Hideaway, but a lot of the city tracks as well as Toad Circuit and Rock Rock Mountain could definitely look better.
I find it hilarious that people pay for maps that were lazily ported from that shitty Tour cashgrab and barely enhanced to actually look good
Tbf 3ds rainbow road looks like an unfinished custom track lol, aside from the texture of the road
@@SnrubSource still fun to play
@@bazookasniper5167 Not really though...
Maple Treeway got downgraded like hell
Your script for this video was a cinematic masterpiece.
Mario Kart 8 tracks are each a world on its own. You feel like the race is really happing in this environment and in a cup they go from one destination to an other. But the Dlc tracks are so emtpy and the textures are so shiny. They look like the Custom mk8 tracks that are coming out today. And it feels like there is the track but nothing is around it. Its not in a specific world, someone just put some roads there. (expect snowland, it looks better then some retro tracks in the main game and is really fun to race.)
yeah, another snow land defender! Many seem to write the track off for it's simple layout and unpopularity in online play, but it's such a beautiful track that's surprisingly fun to race on. The only other track I enjoyed that much from the DLC was Ninja Hideaway, and even there the graphic quality is far off from the base game.
Funny you mention custom tracks, because i've seen a couple times on customs of Waluigi Pinball, people complaining about the fact that there's no pinballs in the tracks or mentioning little details that the author has missed, but most of the time is obvious why those aren't there, cuz it's a custom track. Same goes for any track that has something that can't be replicated in Wii (Rain or such).
But then the BCP comes out, and the devs themselves miss/leave out details like Coconut Mall's moving cars or, ironically enough, Waluigi Pinball's sound effects, but this time people are seemingly unfazed by this, or even defending it, despite it being a paid thing now, instead of a passion project made by someone on their free time.
for those people who forgot that mariokart 8 on wii u existed, nintendo has done dlc for mariokart before. bet you didnt know that the last four cups were originally dlc.
those tracks were made amazingly, and if nintendo was able to nail such good tracks on the original 8 dlc, well then on 8 deluxe they should try and achieve the same.
in 8 dlc there is no noticeable dip in quality, in 8 deluxe it really really depends
@@Duskool I dont miscredit the custom track scene. Obviously its still in the begining and the work now is very important, to push the quality further (like mkwii custom tracks). In the Dlc the textures (for expample 3ds rainbow road) are so shiny, like a lot of custom tracks ive seen. The main mk8 tracks have a more serious tone to them and i dont understand why they make the dlc tracks so cartoon like. For me its destroying the aesthetic of the game.
@@thealmightycrisprat Yes the wiiu dlc was amazing! On the same level as the normal tracks, sometimes even better. With Wild Woods they created the best track visually ever.
'Coconut mall ,maple tree way and Coconut mall'🤣
“That room for improvement was still up for rent.” Is funny as hell
Very specific thing to point out but the script this video felt especially crisp. The jokes were snappy and never overstayed their welcome, and you gave a clear run through of everything you wanted to say. If this is the direction you wanna go for the foreseeable future, im all for it
mario wii best
Everything you said, wrong

My first Mario Kart game was DS. When I got Mario Kart Wii a few years later I was blown away by the difference in visual quality. And I loved the addition of tricks: shaking the Wiimote on a ramp to get a speed boost, and hearing the trick sound effect come out of the Wiimote's little speaker. It was just great. Oh, and the Miis were awesome too!
Mario Kart 7 and 8 added kart customisation which, to me, sounds more fun on paper than it is in reality. It makes it much harder to find the best kart combination for you. But other than that I really like those games too.
omg after reading that, its like i can hear the little trick noise coming out of the remote speaker 😭😭 the nostalgia
Double Dash looked better than both DS and Wii.
Shaking the shit out of the wii remote felt like the best thing ever bro 😭😭
@@wistfulnessFelt so magical and like an exercise!
"these controllers were made for drifting" should I be crying or laughing?
I hated how in Mario Kart DS the other drivers had blank expressions ! You would hit somebody and they would be like “ OH NO ! 🙂 “
who watch the faces on mario kart anyways? ds limitation on that game, much prefer that thing than mk8 "i can't fall from edges and can't lose items without thunder" or the battle tracks where there is team and time limit instead... you know... 3 baloon hp as it should be?
I see lots of channels get praised for avrage quality when they have a lower sub count, This is not one of those times. This video was extremely well done way above the avrage and can't wait to see more from you in the future!
Thank you so much!
The game cube double dash and the wii version were the best. Man, just the pure energy me and my friends had when we played them 😢 the memories.
agreed
n64 and ds tracks are good too
I've been playing with the coin item off in vs with custom items and it's much more fun. I also never liked the amount of post hit invincibility you get in MK8 whereas in Wii and DD you could keep getting hit
"They'd have to write something in german which they may not wanna do..."
But they DID! They wrote "Bahnhof" on the train station, which is the german word for it. So why not on the signs too?
As a car guy, i own a ton of driving games and by far, my fav is mario kart wii. Its just something about the game thats just amazing to play. As far as i know, its also the first videogame ive ever played. The tracks and everything is just so nostalgic and stuff. Btw nintendo please add funky kong to MK 8 he was awesome lol
*are just
What's amazing to play in mariokart wii is how nostalgic it is, the game doesn't excel in controls, in mechanics, in tracks or in music, the only department it wins is in the fact that many children grew up with a Wii so the first games there will always seem amazing.
@@somethingelse4282 no, honestly is the best in mechanics and tracks. Also its music is the most iconic
@@somethingelse4282 bruh?? It has by far the best controls objectively speaking. In terms of tracks and music etc thats subjective but imo theyre by far the best in the series. And for the mechanics... well, ill do you a favor and pretend you didnt say that
Also the mods! In ctgp revolution, you can play most of the tracks from the other games plus custom tracks. You can also customize the music
Nothing quite makes you feel old like a gaming UA-camr saying their first MK was WII 😭 Double dash is incredible, you gotta play
Good to see a viral hit on your channel, Iv enjoyed your content for quite a while
It's unfortunate the DS GPU doesn't support a more pleasantly looking type of downscaling of 3D graphics that are more in the back. Instead it's just nearest neighbour resizing.
Downscaling of 3D graphics, Only does nearest neighbor scaling? What do you mean by that?
I just want to point out that the switch is ever so slightly more powerful than the Wii U, you can't expect a big jump in visual quality if any jump at all.
Mario Kart Double Dash will always be the best Mario Kart IMO. Obviously my opinion is tainted with it being my first Mario Kart and the second video game I ever owned but I just love the game and wish they’d bring back 2 characters per kart, at least as a toggleable option.
My only real complaint with Double Dash is the low track count, albeit all the tracks are fucking great
@@MrFusion I liked the All Cup Tour, but Nintendo really needs to give us reverse tracks
Amazing format, love it, this is some of that good good

In my opinion the tracks in the DLC that looks worse than the base game are straight up disrespectful to the base games art directors who worked their butts off to make sure the tracks looked as stunning as possible, and now having nearly half of the games tracks with minimalist tour ported tracks, it’s a slap in the face to them.
I just want to give some attention to your intro! As a 3D designer myself, I appreciate media like this, so keep it up!
i just discovered you today and holy shit your content is so funny and professional! keep up the good work and you’ll be HUGE
Thank you so much!
Yeah, the Booster Course Pass is definitely a quantity-in-exchange-for-quality thing. It's really fun and exciting to be able to boot up the game and have such a massively increased variety of tracks to boot up, and in most cases those tracks are still really fun and hold up great. While "quality over quantity" is a nice sentiment, I would say that in terms of content, quantity in this case holds a *lot* of water and makes the BCP worth it for me.
That being said... yeah, there's really no denying that it could be a lot better. They could have gone with fewer tracks and improved them more to fit with MK8's style, or spread the 48 tracks across a longer period of time. Heck, it's clear they had to take a lot of criticism to get the Wave 3 tracks as good as they are - the Wave 1-2 tracks look worse and don't even have antigrav sections (sky-high sundae aside).
It sucks, and I totally get why people are put off by it. But at the same time... I'm not actually that miffed by it? It's just nice to have a greater selection of tracks to boot up when playing the game with friends, and as you said in the video, the tracks you said are still solid enough to be a ton of fun to play through.
I'm not too worried about MK9 when they decide to actually make it - I get the feeling they'll scale back the scope in favor of polish like MK8 did, especially now that the BCP exists for our quantity needs.
That's a really good point, I think the BCP is a really good deal despite being lower quality. I was sort of expecting 48 complete remasters of old tracks just for MK8, which is super unrealistic given the timeframe and price point. It seems to be more of a "we're bringing some new tracks to Mario Kart Tour and bringing 48 from Tour to MK8" which I'm fine with since they look good enough and are good fun to play. Anyways, thanks for watching!
Back when the Miis were integrated in the game. :)
this is so underrated
I still enjoy MKWii to this day especially with the CTGP mod installed and being able to play on so many cool custom tracks
MKWii with CTGP is the definitive way to play Mario Kart.
"video games are for looking at not playing"
Dude ...what??
Congrats on the algorithm push!
My main problem with the new coconut mall is that they like, shrunk it. It feels way smaller and shorter than the original and 7 versions.
Mario kart 8 is great and all, but 7 is still my favorite. 7 is when they officially “nailed” that perfect Mario kart gameplay, and even though 8 feels just a good, 7 still did it first. Also, I just prefer the track layouts in 7.
Great vid for the amount of subs
Oh boy, I’m featured heavily 😅
this video was great! it feels like a scott the woz video from someone other than scott the woz. i assume you take some inspiration from him. but great work, i really enjoyed all the little gags and jokes!
Yeah he's a pretty big inspiration for me, thanks!
Im hoping for moonview highway or Wii rainbow road for the last 3 waves of the booster course pass "koopa cape, dk summit, moonview highway, wii rainbow road" for the booster course pass and then leave toads factory for Mario Kart X. along side wuhu loop and maka wuhu from 3ds :) "edit" this means we will get lovely looking tracks in the next base game retro tracks
Amazing video man! You’ve definitely earned a new subscriber!
MK8 Coconut mall is a pandemic mall so there are less people inside and most of the shops there are closed
The most jarring aspect about the BCP is easily the presentation, specifically between the visuals and music of the courses. It’s confusing to see all the remixed tunes right on point and on-par with the base game, but most of the visuals on the 8DX DLC courses (as of writing this) looking so cheap and lifeless.
If it was down to me, I’d value quality over quantity like the Wii U version’s DLC courses, plus they could’ve added more characters to the roster and vehicle parts, overall adding more to the meta game.
I was really expecting him to flame Tour
I kind of did, but I didn't want to make people feel bad for playing it lol
hi man, i just saw the absolutely criminally low number of subs you have, so I dropped a sub because holy this video is so good!! reminds me of Scott the woz’s videos, which I think is amazing content, so I think if your other videos are as good as this, you’ll def grow in no time :D
If you see this I wish you the best of luck and am excited to watch your channel grow!!
edit: Ok now that I think abt it it's probably more of a ‘Scott the woz with a hint of Nathaniel bandy’ but my point still stands abt the quality of your content :DD
5:39 this single joke was worth the watch
It's sort of funny the perspectives. Double Dash was my jam (came out when I was in my teens, played it a ton, great fun). Never bought nor played Mario Kart Wii, it's the main one I'd draw a total blank on :P
Wow, I am mesmerized by your speaking voice. You should do documentaries!
The humor in this video is on point! Laughed at least a dozen times. The pacing and content was good too! Definitely earned a sub from me!

Most of the things pointed out in various other videos like this regarding the booster pass I would never have noticed or cared until someone said something. Other then the cars not moving before the patch in Coconut Mall, i think they look/play great.

this isn't really about the track quality and more about the track visual quality, maybe include that in the title. hilarious video nonetheless
Thanks! I meant to mention somewhere that the reason that I didn't factor in the quality of how the tracks play is because that seems completely subjective, whereas the visual quality is more easily quantified. Or at least I have no idea how to quantify how well a track plays lol.
good video
Well-written script, great line delivery, and nicely paced overall!
I would've liked to hear a few more specific examples of things you liked visually when you discuss the tracks looking better than their predecessors in the first half of the video. And if the early games weren't the focus, maybe a quick montage of the early games could've taken us to the 3D action a little sooner.
Looking forward to more of your videos in the future!
Yeah that's a very good point, I'd do this video quite a bit differently if I had a chance. I'll try and apply the criticisms I've gotten here to my future videos, thank you!
Yeah the booster course pass just keeps looking better and better as the waves go's. It's not as good as the base game but it's still a improvement.
Rock rock mountain looks like trash
Well obviously it wouldn’t look as good it took literally years of development to probably make the original mairo kart 8 track in detail so having it being made in booster pass should of already give you a hint that not going to be up to par is pretty ridiculous that people were having way too much of expectations with it
@@Yoshizuyuner it's fair to have expectations of tracks in the same game coming out 8 years later to at least meet the standards the 8 year old tracks set. What's crazy is people refusing to call out Nintendo's laziness when they just shamelessly port tour tracks.
@@archer5834 They aren't shamelessly just porting tour tracks, it's silly how people literally heard about 48 retro tracks, DOUBLE the amount of tracks on the game with already the most tracks in the series and expected for them to be the same quality, don't like it don't buy it, the price is more than worth for what's offering, unless u would rather 25$ for 16 MK8 quality courses like the wii u had.
Nintendo doesn't own u or the fans jack shit
@@somethingelse4282 Nintendo owes us tracks that don't look terrible. The tracks from the main game are nearly 9 years old, and Nintendo is perfectly capable of making a product that looks better or at least the same. They know they don't have to though because there are always people who are perfectly satisfied with what they make, which is why we've seen a substantial drop in quality lately.
Really good video man ! I thought you would just try to destroy the DLC, but no and I think all of your point make sense !
Nintendo doesn’t have the 2014 technology anymore to make good looking tracks.
Never clicked a suscribe button as fast as when I saw that mk7 joke
Also waiting for Mario Kart Wii 2
I hate being a GameCube shill but MK DD was probably the best MK imo for both gameplay and visuals in tracks. The world feels alive and it seems “believable”
I love Mario kart 8 and Mario kart Wii, but I love Mario kart Wii more because of its track design. I have almost got motion sick because of sheer amount of loops in Mario kart 8, while simple tracks like coconut mall in Mario kart Wii are still amazing
Yeah I agree, I think the anti-gravity thing is a cool gimmick for some tracks, but it seems like it's used more frequently than it really needs to be.
Who else is getting serious Scott the Woz vibes from this guy?
me.
At 6:53 I would like to add that some of the escalators in some places look like conveyor belts too
Mariokart Wii is what your visuals look like after spending a day in someones chlorine pool imo
love the video it was kind of like scott the woz
How did you just get like 100 subs in one day
I don't think people noticed that all these tacks are just ripped from tour, even the new remasters like boo lake were added to tour then added to Mario kart 8 so it easily explains why the visuals are so bad
I think "looks good for a free mobile game" is a very fair description of the BCP.
@@PlatinumAltaria couldn't have said it better
Not ALL of them. Several perhaps but not all.
well the ones that came out on the switch first like cocnutmall and sky high sunday were in tour's files for months before the pass came out. I'm embarrassed to say but I play a lot of tour (don't pay tho!) so I've been following this stuff for a while. you can actually predict which maps are coming based off of the recent tours which is pretty neat I guess
don't even think it looks that bad, doesn't fit 8DX style that well, yes, but i prefer the more stylized and brighter colors over the more realistic look of 8DX courses. Hope the next Mario Kart game gets a good mix of both in terms of stylization and detail
Said coconut mall twice cause that’s how good it is ❤❤
3:35 "some people dont like how the game looks [...] but GRAPHICS ASIDE there are so many beautiful maps"
3:28 coconut mall, maple treeway and coconut mall are my favourite tracks aswell
Your humor must take inspiration from Scott the Woz
My exact reaction at 4:05 was “What!?”. 6:51 the escalators had arrows on them in MK7
lol yeah that's why I called them "stupid Mario Kart 7 conveyor belts" because I think that they should have changed them back to escalators.
My beef with the newer ones compared to the Wii version is how things look. Sure, the wii version “glowed” visually. But the 8 deluxe version looks like everything is made of plastic with how shiny all the cart bits are. They overshot the realism so now it looks over the top fake.
Also, the blue shell in the wii version actually seemed scary. It’s a tiny, flying blue streak of lightning that makes all sorts of alarm bells go off when you are in first place. Meanwhile in 8D, they took away the graphic appeal. It’s not fast, it doesn’t make cool visual effects, the alert is a lackluster piano key, and it doesn’t have wings. They could have just retextured it to be a blue sphere and it would be just as interesting.
I think they re-designed the blue shell to look like 64's blue shell
Why the booster course pass courses aren’t up to the standards of the base game in terms of geometry is because they use the models from Mario kart tour
Obviously. Everyone knows that lmao.
