Nice tip. Headphones sound much better now, less muddy and fuller. I have worn studio grade headphones before and the apple air pod max aren’t close, but they were never meant to!
Thanks, learned a few things here. I actually can hear a difference with the wired adapter while plugging into an iPad or similar and Apple Lossless files. The highs are crisper with less sibilance and slightly better frequency separation. Once you hear it, you'll know.
I got a pair yesterday. $460 tax included new in sealed box. They’re awesome. Best over ear headphones I’ve ever had. And I’ve got a pair of the first Sony wired ANC headphones, a pair of Sennheisers and a pair of Marshall’s. The AirPod Max phones blow them away.
Am I the only one who thinks the sound is better with left this option off? I've been testing A/B for hours now. I'm a music producer tho so my taste might be different to the typical music consumer. In my opinion the option boosts the high mids and highs which sounds kinda nice, but im missing some of the punchyness of the mids when turned off... sometimes i like the option sometimes I don't. When turned on I prefere the slight mode a lot more than the moderate or strong one !
you bring up a good point, for certain songs actually it's better to leave it at default setting. it really depends on the genre of music but for most genres for me turning that setting on brings a big improvement even at the expense of hurting dynamic range a little. It's totally up to user preference to turn the enhancements on/off and by how much of course... There is no official right or wrong answer.
@@Killyang True but the biggest no go for me is the noiselevel which is increased a lot by this option. I hear a lot of movie music and in the quiet parts it sounds so noisy with turned on. Even when something about the sound is better.
There is an “even better” possibility to increase the sound in my opinion. I compared the profile against the settings as you showed them but I find these even better. Obviously that can be personal.
The price they charge for these, you shouldn’t have to be searching for apps to make them sound loud. This is the reason I’m returning these worthless gimmicky overpriced headphones. After three days and not being able to figure out why a pair of $100 skull candy headphones blow these “air pods max” out of the water. Only thing APM has is spacial audio and clear sound. Little to no bass and super low. Dafuq outta here with $500 headphones made of metal that you cant wear when it’s cold outside because condensation will build up inside and burn out the board 😂 Too bad I didn’t look at all these videos first of “boosting up” your volume to make $500 headphones sound good.
I agree that the the upper mids are a bit recessed, and that your recommended EQ settings are helpful. However, I don't agree that your recommended Accessibility Menu "hacks" are an improvement. Those settings are meant to help people who have hearing loss in certain frequency ranges. They don't work the same way that a traditional EQ does. They screw with the dynamic range, and that was apparent to me the moment that I tried it. It's similar to the old school "loudness" buttons on stereos...except a bit more targeted. That being said, I can see how it can seem like an improvement. Many people equate louder with better.
The keyword is “targeted” sound boost. While I do not know the exact frequency range that Apple is boosting with that setting I can assure you it’s not the same as turning up your overall gain/volume a couple notches. I agree with you that louder = better for most but if you compare a song at higher volume without the boost and then compare again at a lower volume with that boost on, the shaping of the sound is very apparent. The boost is definitely targeted somewhere towards the mids and upper mids. If iOS had a built in audio eq I would simply tell everyone to boost the 1 to 6khz frequencies to greatly improve the AirPods Max and call it a day. With that said your feedback is appreciated.
@@Killyang I agree that it's not the same as just turning up the gain/volume a couple of notches. It's also affecting the dynamic range, and that's why I have a problem with it. The description under the slider for "Balanced Tone" spells this out. It says "soft sounds will be boosted slightly, moderately, or strongly". This is another way of saying that the setting tampers with the dynamic range. Part of what it's doing is compressing dynamic range. To my wife's ever lasting annoyance, I've spent way too much money over the past decade in order to be able to listen to quality recordings over quite a few different quality headphones..and on the rest of the gear that goes along with them. I only say this to emphasize that I have a pretty good feel for what the music that I listen to should sound like, and the changes that those accessibility settings make sound wrong to me. But, like you said, it definitely makes the mids sound louder, so I'm not surprised that many people like the end result.

This is a fantastic review of the AirPods Max. Thank you for the tip. Discovering the Headphone Accommodation on my iPhone made my AirPods Pro sounded waaaay better! I had my EQ on Rock but switched to Flat after the tweak. It sounds amazing to my ears. I can hear the hi hats better. Incredible. Thank you! 🙏 PS. Can’t wait to get the AirPods Max on Boxing Day.
Although balanced with bass boosted is great for rap/hiphop dubstep bass-heads, clean and crisp, makes those few moments in other genres sound great when it kicks in. Doesnt overtake the mids or highs
Holy friggin sht. Turning on the Headphone Accomodations in medium mode transformed these headphones into sound unbelievable. If you dont do this, dont bother spending so much for the headphones.
Thanks for the tip! It works wonders on certain songs, but for others the boost makes the highs too bright and noise artefacts get amplified. Not sure if my unit is faulty though.
This was a great review, definitely the best in its class. The only issue was camera work. Your camera kept changing focus, maybe how you edited your clips. Also the screen in the background was detracting from you and your message. If you change those, the video would be fantastic.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback! Yes I did turn off autofocus in my later videos as I noticed it was always refocusing. I can also do something about the background tiles on the screen.
Thank you for that idea 💡 it sounds really interesting as it gives additional emphasis on mids and highs, BUT at the expense. Lows becomes inexpressive at all. Plus it adds up noice for certain music genres - not so good. Anyway, it was worth a try.
Try the slight setting instead. You should see a moderate boost in the mids and the low end will still be there. Also it depends which bitrate you are streaming at. If you have Spotify premium or Apple Music then you should be okay. Thanks for the feedback.

It results in extra hissing noise along with the boost ( u can check by listening to relatively silent sections of songs after cranking the volume up) so i am not sure if this is a good idea ..
yes it depends on which type of music you are listening to. for example i noticed with classical music there is a bit of a hiss introduced. this is normal because the mids and highs are being boosted but in my experience for most genres of music the pros far outweigh the cons because unfortunately the mids are lacking out of the factory

I'd highly recommend just setting it manually center it will give you a much better and cleaner video. The auto track focus is convenient but at the cost of quality... And you got all the other reviewer intangibles.
I just did turned the Headphone Accommodations on but it seems like I can’t turn the volume higher or lower from my phone only from the rotation button on the AirPods Max itself, is that normal or?

I didn’t hear that though - so *do* you think the value is there for these?
You’re right. Sorry I didn’t make that point across clearly. Even though they are a bit expensive the overall build quality, playback battery life and features are very solid but it’s really after applying the sound eq tweaks that the sound really stood out and therefore I would say they are worth the money.

So I have an ipad pro with the quadspeakers and noticed cool details within the best of songs I didn’t notice before. I’m sure theres a term for what I’m trying to say but not sure what it is. But if you get me, Are there good headphones that are capable of achieving the same sound the quad speakers produce?
Yes what you are referring to is called sound stage. There are some headphones that have very good sound stage. Look at beyer dynamic dt 990 pro or sennheiser hd 599. Both excellent and under $200. The AirPods Max have very good sound stage however.
update, didn’t like the accommodations thing, but i’m loving the eq settings! my airpods max have been sounding quiet which apparently is normal but this gives them an extra punch
I think that I have been the first person ever to mix with the Airpods Max's for months now, because the environment I'm in at the moment doesn't allow for me to have any reference monitors set up, and I do get pretty decent results. Every engineer review of them I watched says they suck for mixing music.. I beg to differ. I mean I'm not no Andrew Scheps, but I think my mixes are pretty listenable at best. Here's the more recent one I did if anybody is interested. Again... Mixed entirely with Aipods Max ua-cam.com/video/V571JsV2zy8/v-deo.html
Yes I agree the AirPods Max are not ideal for mixing. You want headphones that have a sound that is as flat as possible which is why I love my audio technica headphones for mixing. Having said that your mix ain’t bad. I listened to it and it’s pretty solid for a live performance. Thanks for sharing!
@@Killyang I appreciate it. I don't think there is a true FLAT headphone out there. All headphones have some kind of curve to them otherwise all mixes will sound flat. I also have a theory on why I mix with the Airpods. Its simple, because in most peoples cases, that's how they listen to audio, its either on headphones or on phone speakers, and to the phone speakers thing, I always mix in transparency mode. I think of the Airpods Max in transparency mode they sort act like open back headphones. You get that ambience of the "outside world" which is how most people will listen to audio anyway. In the outside world. Unless you're an audiophile, or a mixing / recording engineer. Which is not most cases.
You do realize that even as dumb as the smart case looks it makes the headphones go into ultra-low battery mode so your other complaint about battery life won't be much of an issue right?
My apologies Android users are not SOL! There are lots of EQ options out there such as the equalizer & bass booster app to tweak your sound. I would recommend a +2-3db boost on the upper mid vocal range frequencies (1 to 6kHz) to make the vocals pop out more because that’s where the AirPods max are lacking in my opinion. Also some audiophiles have mentioned that the highs are tuned a bit too strong but I personally love hearing the high hats and cymbals in my music so that one is a matter of preference!
Hi there for production I use the Audio Technica M50X. They have a great flat sound and to make them sound even flatter I pair them with the M50X sound profile from Sonarworks.
@@sokipper2007 I never used the dt770 but I did use the dt880 back in the days and I did not like them for production. They were bass heavy. You want a sound that’s as flat as possible but if your dt770 have less bass that’s even better so that when you produce you will naturally not put too much bass in your music. I still highly recommend getting the M50x
To my ears these settings sound awful! Waaay to much highs, it hurts my ears. Have you guys damaged your hearing or what? I got the best sound using Mimi Hearing test app and using those settings.

I have the sennheisers
Nice! how do you like them?
@@Killyang nice
I NEED BASS
Like those covers for the cans. Do you have a link to those?
Sure here you go! www.amazon.com/dp/B08RD64BTK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_J11EF70VMQSSVTNP9SP8
question from a spotify user: do i try out that accessibility thing by itself or with that spotify eq?
update, didn’t like the accommodations thing, but i’m loving the eq settings! my airpods max have been sounding quiet which apparently is normal but this gives them an extra punch
@@unafflicted I personally do both. Give the “slight” setting a try. If you don’t like it still it’s all good. Just use the Spotify eq. ✌🏻
8:03 nah, it’s louder than it was but it makes the sound quality worse.
5:06 where did you get that USB-C to USB-A adapter?
Amazon! just search "USB-C to USB-A adapter"
Love the Shirt..
thanks me 2! :D
I would just have bass aaaah I have AirPods max and I’m sad 😢
Buys $500 headphones and has to figure out hacks to make it sound loud or good 😂
not us having the same trach can 😭
Dude what the hell!! I mean.. when I switch between this option on and off its like I walk in and out of room! Were the mids really that muffled?
Yessir massive difference huh! :D
Aloha. From wich company are the protection for the pods? Thanks, Stephan
Aloha I just did an amazon search for “AirPods max silicon case cover” 👌🏻
But…seriously…how’s the bass?
😆
Hi. I have some questions. What's headphone you use in your music production? Or can you give me any suggestions?
Hi there for production I use the Audio Technica M50X. They have a great flat sound and to make them sound even flatter I pair them with the M50X sound profile from Sonarworks.
@@Killyang What do you think about dt770 pro? And is it okay to use headphones that have less bass for music production?
@@sokipper2007 I never used the dt770 but I did use the dt880 back in the days and I did not like them for production. They were bass heavy. You want a sound that’s as flat as possible but if your dt770 have less bass that’s even better so that when you produce you will naturally not put too much bass in your music. I still highly recommend getting the M50x
@@Killyang Thank you.
To my ears these settings sound awful! Waaay to much highs, it hurts my ears. Have you guys damaged your hearing or what? I got the best sound using Mimi Hearing test app and using those settings.
