As an exmuslim living in an islam theocratic state, I have first hand experience about how deeply feel attached to the Islamic ideals and the word of God. Any attack/criticism on the word of God is taken as an attack on God and by extension on all of the Muslim brotherhood. You are deemed not only a blasphemer but more so an enemy of God and those that believe in him. If you spread your criticisms of Islam, It's like spreading free tickets to hell and hence you must be stopped. Some Ex-Christians may think that their experience is analogous to this however I should clarify that the homogeneity and intensity of such beliefs between the two faiths is nowhere near comparable. Despite what most liberal Muslims portray Islam as, It's not a faith of inclusion. The faith Islam is based on submission to will of God. Quran is the literal word of God and Mohammad literal met God at one point (known as mairaage). It makes sense for all Muslims for that creator to then dictate every single aspect of your life from spiritual to the economic, from law to governmental, from personal to cooperate structures. A attack on these aspects is not considered as bad as an attack on the fundamental ideas/presuppositions. People are willing to die and kill for such ideas. These ideas are engrained into our head through stories of shuhada (martyrs), leaders, and great warriors of the Islamic history. The fantasized idea of Jihad is not just in forms of simple efforts but in actual war.

2:49 Sam Harris is being a sly sophist as always here. You can change your religion superficially to Islam by just reciting an Arabic sentence. But Islam is not just a religion. It's a whole culture, a deeply held set of values, ingrained behavioral patterns, even personality traits, a lot of which may be even hard to articulate (put aside persuading one to change them in a truly bottom-up way with reasoned arguments.) As such, it governs the very wiring of its hosts' brains like genes. Old habits die hard, as you should know being a neuroscientist. The reason why Afghan people are so different than the Dutch or Singaporeans in their behaviors and aspirations is not only because they have different metaphysical beliefs. I would argue it's got very little to do with all that. Christianity, and its various differet interpretations over the centuries, has shaped the Western mind and character intricately, which cannot be replicated by just parroting "I accept Jesus as my savior." So, the culture in which one's been raised is somewhat like race, too. The culture of a region may indeed have been shaped significantly by its religion, but the culture of an individual born and raised in that region cannot be changed so easily by just changing their professed religion. Changing your metaphysical beliefs may be good enough for God, but it's not good enough for the members of a society re-evaluating its immigration policies and trying to choose who to have as their neighbors and colleagues at work. Change my mind.

I left Islam in 2001. The most dismaying aspect I've had to grapple with since then are the words and actions of certain segments within progressives, liberals, and the left in the Western world. It's akin to The Upside Down, the alternate dimension portrayed in the Netflix show Stranger Things. Many of these individuals, who advocate for the separation of religion and state, gender equality, and gay rights, not only remain silent about the distressing, almost medieval treatment of women, gay people, and ex-Muslims in Islam and the Muslim world, but they also launch attacks against those for criticising or questioning Islam. I've even been labelled a racist! It's perplexing where to begin with such accusations. 'Um, yeah, Islam isn't a race/ethnicity, and I'm an Arab, so who exactly am I racist against?' The reality is that many of those who identify as 'progressive' etc., are themselves racist (and generally basic). Their worldview can be distilled as follows: white, Christian, Jew (powerful, bad) versus black or other non-white, Muslim (victim, good).

It's infuriating that the two competing options in the next election are going to be woke-city and Trumpistan. Really? That's the best the USA, a country of more than 200 million people, can come up with? As a European: Are you kidding us?

I find the phrase that Maajid Nawaz often said “the bigotry of low expectations” accurate to describe liberal white social-Justice society. They see brown/ black/ non white people in an almost child-ish way, not as intelligent or mature as the superior white liberals. So any violence or despicable action committed by someone brown is deemed as ok, in the same way that they just shrug their shoulders when a toddler hits a kid at the playground. “Oh he’s just a little child, he isn’t as smart as an adult, he doesn’t know any better.” It’s patronizing and yes very bigoted. But alas, white liberals can never be wrong about how they view all other races. They’ll always position themselves as the tolerant parents, and the world’s brown/ black people as their dumb children.

Sam, an easy way to point out the hypocrisy of all those protesting in favor of Palestine pretending they do it purely out of humanitarian compassion is this: Did they protest the ethnic cleansing of Kurds (Muslims) in Afrin by Turkey (Muslims), did they protest the ethnic cleansing of Armenians (Christians) in Nagorno Karabakh by Azeris (Muslims), did they protest the ethnic cleansing of half of Cyprus (Christians) by Turkey (Muslims), did they protest the killings of Yemenis (Muslims) by Saudis (Muslims). I did not see any such protests in Muslim countries nor in the West! That’s because the perpetrator is Muslim. These people just see Muslims as oppressed people and can’t even fathom that they can commit atrocities just as Christians or atheists can.
The scary part is that the Western media ITSELF elevates these non-Muslim aggressions and downplays the Muslim ones. And people don’t really need to look that hard to see why.

Btw the media at least in Europe is not cheering this at all. To this day people don’t believe that Hamas killed/raped civilians and even today the BBC posts articles saying “the BBC *hears* that Hamas killed”, presenting it as speculation and not fact.
Let me close by saying that I really feel for the Palestinians and support a Palestinian state where they can live free of slow displacement via settlements. BUT I find it despicable that people in the West, *especially Muslims*, so vehemently oppose Jews having 1 homeland, but gloss over any of the other 50 Muslim states expanding and committing the same or worse crimes.

Imagine them saying that we are "phobic" for calling out that behavior and that criticism of their group is off limits. NO idea, religion or philosophy should be free from criticism. Are some people bigoted towards Muslims out of fear and not understanding the religion? Absolutely. But a lot of us have actually studied and understand the religion and are simply calling out the abhorrent practices. That doesn't make me "phobic" - it makes me well versed and critical.
