  • March 8, 1959 marked a key date in the careers of the irrepressible Groucho, Chico and Harpo Marx, for that was the day they appeared together for the last time on screen, on TV's "General Electric Theater" on CBS. Jane Pauley looks back at the careers of the comedy icons.

saw Duck Soup a few months ago and was completely baffled at the striking difference between other comedy films at the time and how funny they still are today

Their earlier movies were funnier because the Hayes Production Code hadn't taken effect until 1934. And while A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (1935) was a great start for the boys into the Code era, and even their weakest movies afterwards are still watchable, their later films just aren't as funny. It's also likely that as they started aging, they reached a point where they were now past their prime; all of them still great entertainers into their old age, but no longer able to sustain the rigors of making uproariously funny films by the time the 1940's rolled around.

When I was little, the Marx Bros. had me laughing so hard I 👋 couldn't breathe. Still love the boys, though!
Was not a "YBYL' fan. Groucho often seemed just a bit mean. Who knows?

Groucho in his private life was a bit lonely and miserable. Hard for anyone who knew him to want to be around him because of his acerbic ways. I don't think he really meant to live up to his name as a "grouch" but he just didn't know how to relate on a human level to those closest to him. I don't mean to say that Groucho was absolutely unbearable, and he did have his circle of friends that he often ate out with, like George Burns, Jack Benny, Al Jolson, etc. But he didn't relate well with his daughter, and by the time of his death he and his daughter had been long estranged. It's sad, really.

    Best comedy team ever.
And his name was Chick-O, not Cheek-O. He got his nickname because he chased girls, a.k.a. chicks.

I can't help myself, re: the "Chico" pronunciation! I know better, but I STILL vocalize the name "Cheek-oh!" Doesn't help that there's a town in my state (northern California) called Chico, which everyone pronounces ""Cheek-oh!" 🤣

Women aren't quickly on their way to EXTINCTION. But elephants are. Where's your complaint about that ugly joke heard in this piece as it aired on TV?
