    I wish people would stop comparing theatre versions to movie versions. They aren't comarable, and that's the beauty of musical theatre. It's so raw and real. Now don't get me wrong, Gene Kelly was AMAZING!!! I'm actually singing this song at a theatre fundrasier. And that's why I'm here, costume ideas.

    am i the only one who actually enjoyed this? i agree, it is nothing compared to the original but at least he was having fun and i found myself smiling all the way through. is that not the point of a musical? as long as it makes you happy it doesn't really matter

    • @jb47vintage
      @jb47vintage 9 років тому +17

      No you're not the only one. He was having so much fun that it made me happy just to watch. And putting his hat ON the cop's head was one point where this production surpassed the movie. I suppose in 1950 the cop would have run him in.

      KatieIsMe Well, almost the only one. The guy couldn't even do the simple tap dance that Kelly could do in his sleep, plus he even had to slow down the number to do what he (barely) did.
      And the classic sign of weak dancing is to add a chorus line of other dancers.
      Painful.

    • @clevm002
      @clevm002 7 років тому +1

      DDumbrille the chorus part is from the end of the show ... but as this was a to spot they did a mash up of both.

      I disagree with you because I thought this was a great performance. People have to know that musicals are continuous single take with live singing. If Gene Kelly fails to catch his umbrella, they do another take. Here, it's a death sentence. I was pleasantly surprised they did include that bit in the musical but that's why they get great casts and this guy performed so well.

    one reason why on stage it is slowed down is that you can have NG in movie and you can take month to shoot a movie, but you have to put everything in a musical like 3 hours per day, 8 times a week (given that there is alternative, it is still 4 times a week), it is much more demanding on the stage.

    Great performance, very well done Mr Cooper, congrats! Folks who still blubber after Gene Kelly are not able to differ between movie and live theatre. It's like comparing apples with pears. Certainly you cannot hear tap sound as there is lots of water on the stage!

    • @DDumbrille
      @DDumbrille 9 років тому

      Lieschen Müller Nonsense. It's been done in other stage versions of the show for the last 20 years, complete with taps, and at the correct speed (not slowed way down). This guy just wasn't competent enough. Couldn't even handle the simple, simple routine that Kelly did in his sleep.

    • @DDumbrille
      @DDumbrille 3 роки тому

      @@randomaj9752 "Pretty well done" is a safe assessment, but a little kind. Perhaps I was did exaggerate a bit, but since he was good at doing everything else, was it just laziness that he didn't bother attempting to learn a few simple steps?

    • @DDumbrille
      @DDumbrille 3 роки тому

      @@randomaj9752 I do. And of course it's easier when it's broken up into shots, sometimes shot over several days or even a week or more. But your argument doesn't hold water in this regard, as SIngin' in the Rain has been a stage production for 25 years, and performers have done this number -- with all the taps in place -- without any excuses. You're right, it isn't easy, but they did it.

    OK, Gene Kelly's performance in the movie is way superior. But I Think we must give some credit to this attempt too, considering it was performed in a theater, with live audience, and an orchestra playing live. The singer-dancer was not bad and I missed the tapping. I think it deserves a "like" for the effort to take to the Theater such a classic.

    The original had multiple takes, and, although long takes, you could perform the most advanced and inhumane dance numbers unlimited times until they got it right. Musicals can't do that. You make a mistake, you can't redo it. Gene Kelly was an absolute legend, but think of the fact that this is all done in one big take. It's quite impressive when I think about it.
    Oh yeah, AND you can't hear tap dancing when it's on water. And there's only one guy there. Don't complain. It's impossible.

    I really like the musical, and this was a commendable attempt but i felt tired looking at him he seemed like he used so much energy and could barely catch his breath, the original seemed so effortless (i get it, editing helps). It was very obvious when he had to stop for a second and make sure he catches the umbrella for example, and wasn't very good at the lamp post. Just an observation. Still enjoyed it

  • @SilverArro

    I don't think such a literal translation from film to stage was a very good idea. The film version is effortless and full of joy. Certainly, much of that has to do with editing, multiple takes, cinematography, etc., but then that's my point. This scene was perfectly designed for a film, and if the goal was to translate that to a live stage performance, the choreography and staging should have been adapted as such. Though I suppose then, everyone would complain that it was "too different" from the original. Eh - I guess there's no winning with something as iconic as Singin' in the Rain.

    HAHA the laughter of the audience says differently, you have to remember that the UK has a different sense of humour. Peter Kay is an extremely popular comedian over there. He's even in the 2013 Guinness World Records for having the largest stand up comedy tour in the world. So to say he's not funny "AT ALL" is wrong, because many find him hilarious, including myself.
