Swerve Strickland vs Kyle Fletcher is the single most insane choice for a first match for a new champion I've ever heard of. There was really NOBODY else on the roster that Tony could have chosen?
💯 That next match was like being a boxing champion, you just dethroned the last guy on PPV for the whole world to see and next fight is against a guy with a 12-7 record ranked 37th.

There is literally 0 wrestlers AEW "elevated" MJF got over on his own. The rest of them were bigger stars before Tony Clown.

Cody went to WWE where most wins mean something. Wins in AEW seem to mean nothing. Guy wins and then, next week something else.

Swerve has not only been booked like trash every week single becoming AEW champion, he's now going into his first AEW title defence on PPV and he's not even the main event.

There were times THE matchup Lashley had felt like a bigger deal(or on paper should have been treated like a bigger deal) than Reigns’ Title defence against some guy not on his level on that same card (yet they still planned on having Reigns Main Event).
Like when Rey Mysterio who was so far past his prime from a Kayfabe standpoint and also from a character standpoint yet they wanted to have Reigns and him Main Event over Lashley and Drew’s Hell in a Cell that had way higher stakes. This was a great opportunity to make those guys main Event since it was gonna be Drew’s last shot against Lashley if he failed. Yet they only had Lashley and Drew Main Event by giving a sorry excuse as to why Reigns had to defend his belt on Smackdown against 619 which essentially buried Lashley’s title reign since they explicitly let you know the only reason He main Evented was because Reigns and Rey couldn’t wrestle that day so they did it earlier.
I know Reigns was getting pushed on his new Chief Character but there were time in Ruthless Agression when sometimes Triple H would Main Event the Double Brand PPV because the matchup or storyline was treated as important while sometimes it was Lesnar who was main Eventing over the Raw side.
Yet with Lashley they made sure to treat his Title as less valuable than Roman Reigns. At no point did they try to let the WWE Title look good or have some shine over the Smackdown’s Universal Title even when it would have made better sense to have the WWE Title Main Event.

Tony Khan has never buried anyone. To bury someone that is a purposeful act. He is just so God Awful at booking and creative. Also look who he gets advice from.

Tony Khan buries everyone. He could sign Brock Lesnar and Batista tomorrow yet make the build to a match between them be terrible and the PPV venue wouldn't sell out.
Swerve has been elevated because of fan response, not because of the booking. I would argue the examples listed are more exceptions because they forced their own direction. Tony books fed bad. I’m betting gangrel shows up because the bad fed wouldn’t allow held down talent Adam Edgeland to have him show up during something.
Moxley is treated as the champ with the fcking NJPW belt and the bucks are the 2nd main story. Swerve isn’t treated as the main focus and he’s the world champion.

this is all being done on purpose. Tony Khan never wanted to push Swerve but Swerve got HIMSELF over. It was nothing at all to do with TK's booking. Now Tony doesn't know what to do.

Tony can tell the story of the Jaguars chasing the Super Bowl but not getting to the big dance. Should tell you everything on how poorly Tony books his top talent after winning a title.

Swerve has become a body floating in the water. There's a chance for saving but I expect his run to stay where it is until he drops the title to someone else who will get more attention. Probably saving it for MJF.
He hasnt "buried" Swerve, cause Swerve is still organically over with fans...BUT he has brought his perception down by booking him like he is Not the best in the World ever since he won. No Main events, mid card, no updated entrance, no Big promo time...Tony seems to be Purposefully trying to hold him down. I wont say buried, cause I think thats more like when Vince would make you do something to screw fans connection with you. It looks like he is litterally trying to keep Swerve down because he wants to give the belt to someone else(WILL OSPRAY IN LONDON) and apparently Always did. He should be treating BOTH like they are the Best in the World and allow a True rivalry to drive the product.
It's only the last year or so Christian has been doing well. When he first signed, they had nothing for him and had to send him to TNA to give him something to do.

Tony would be smart to replicate the structure and basics of Samoa Joe and MJF's title runs for Swerve. Or Swerve should just go into business for himself and take the reigns, don't even give Tony an option or a say. It's not like Tony is gonna fire the guy if he does, you can seemingly do whatever you want there with minimal repercussions.
Even if a wrestler gets over despite the booking, like Kris Statlander or Hobbs or Wardlow or Ricky Starks or Swerve... AEW booking completely kills their momentum and buries them.
I think I figured out Tony's master plan...treat anyone who doesn't fly the "F WWE" flag high enough like garbage & tank their stock so WWE won't be interested.
It would be a moot point if the powerhouse bankrolling AEW had insisted on installing a booker and serious, knowledgeable management team. Has anyone questioned the timing of Punk’s departure, Tony being under a gag order type NDA and that lawyer gal being bottom runged in the Jag’s legal office?
I watch AEW from time to time so I can see some wrestlers that I never heard of because they were on the Indies or promotions like CMLL. I find that AEW needs a total shake up of upper management by having more bookers and working more on long term storylines with more interest. They own ROH too and it becomes harder when you are having wrestlers working both companies and only being paraded out.
It was all downhill, when they decided to have the AEW World Champion have his celebration on Collision, while Y2NDA, and Willow get to have their celebration on Dynamite.

When they did that with Jericho and Action Andretti, Jericho immediately went on his podcast to put himself over as being so nice as to let Andretti beat him. That killed the entire storyline instantly.
