Listen to Keith sing "Don't Close Your Eyes" from this same show and you'll be amazed even further. No telling how big he would've been if he'd lived. Probably the best pure voice to come along in country music in the last 40-50 years.
'Just took time to listen/watch Don't Close Your Eyes. Thank you, the whole band with 'Keith' is as beautiful as it gets. I've missed the world I thought I once knew!
The best keith Whitney songs imo would be of course the 2 mentioned, I'm no stranger to the rain. I'm over you. Miami, my amy. 10 feet away.. somebody's doing me right.. check em out🤘
"I'm No Stranger..." is my favorite Whitley song, too. Great metaphor and clever wordplay and rhymes. "It's hard to keep believin', I'll even come out even."
I knew Keith Whitleys family well He was a already a living legend while he was still alive with his music he will never die his fans will never let that happen Thank you so much for recognizing the only (Real Deal) you will experience and appreciate in our lifetime!
I was just discovering country music around 1987 and Keith's music was the reason for that. It was devastating to all of country music when he died back then and even worse for those of us who see him as the reason we discovered country. I have all his music on CDs and still to this day I never get tired of listening to him. He would have reached the heights of Jones, Haggard, Gosdin, etc. I'm still waiting for someone with the same/similar voice to hit country music. Likely not in my lifetime.
My favorite (hard to pick one), is "I'm No Stranger to the Rain". I am a huge and lifelong Keith fan. But I really want to thank you for your remarkable love and passion for breaking down music in so many genre's. You are amazing and so insightful. Thanks so much. I love your videos.
I love Alison’s version of this song but, for me, Keith’s version is the definitive version for my life. Alison’s is absolutely beautiful but Keith’s gives me goosebumps.
A beautiful song. Whether it’s Ronan Keating, Alison Krauss, Keith Whitley or Paul Overstreet each version has a life of its own. A well written song can find a home in any genre or decade.
I remember when this song came out; the words so beautiful, great song then as it still is today. Amazing the restraint by his bandmates so we can listen to Keith sing and not have his voice overpowered by their instruments. What a skill that's got to be. Rest in peace Keith ♥️
Loved this. My favorite Keith Whitley song is "I'm Over You." Nice fiddle, steel, and piano. Of course great vocals. I hadn't listened to that song in years. Brings back nice memories.
Fil, you have taught me to “listen” to truly appreciate the band …drummer, piano or guitar… as they interact with the vocals… Watching YOU enjoy all genres of music makes me love watching your analysis… Thank you…
I saw Lori Morgan in concert a short few years after he passed. She was equally a talented singer..... I couldn't stop thinking as I watched her how painful a loss it must have been for her to lose him. She put on a great show, very strong vocals. She and Keith were so good together.... 🌟
When Keith name checks the songwriters, Don Schlitz and Paul Overstreet, and says that he was giving a couple of unknown songwriters a break--in case anyone doesn't know--he's kidding around, because Schlitz wrote one of the biggest country hits of all time in the '70s--Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler." And just a couple of years earlier, Schlitz and Overstreet had co-written the country song of the year for 1986, Randy Travis' "Forever and Ever Amen."
You can see a bit of a smirk when he says it. Don and Paul have many many songs to there credit, and did at that time already. The audience knew it as well.
I love your video! I've loved this song for 30+ years and remember when it was first recorded, but I learned so much tonight about it that I had never noticed before. Thanks for all of your excellent musical education for all of us watching. You're a blessing, Fil!
I was so glad to anticipate this analysis video. I loved Keith Whitley and this song especially. You are so interesting Fil in educating us who sometimes know nothing about the mechanics of making music.
I am so glad I came across this video. I'm a huge Keith Whitley fan, from when he came out, solo. The analysis and breakdown of all the collaboration and the way the band dials down when he is singing and dialing up, at the right times. Great video and thank you!
Good piece. I didn't see it live. Keith Whitley wasn't just in bluegrass. He and Rickey Skaggs toured with the Stanley Brothers when they were teenagers. Ralph Stanley said he was the best interpreter of Carter Stanley songs and could handle the band's unique high baritone harmony. He also played with the innovative J.D. Crowe and the New South (Rickey Skaggs, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, J.D. Crowe) blue grass group. He was a great country singer heavily influenced by Carter Stanley and Lefty Frizzell. (Listen to Keith and Lefty's versions of I Never Go Around Mirrors.) His career in country was short due to alcoholism. I think it was the 1989 Country Music Awards Show dedicated a significant portion of the show to Keith and to address discussing alcoholism.
Beautiful love song. Keith always brings a smile to my face, and a tear to my eye. He expressed honest emotion that one could see and feel. A rare feat for many, but that which can break ones heart. Keith singing with (to) Lorrie was beautiful, but sadly Keith could not defeat his darkness....even tho he expressed it with music.
Not that it really matters but this performance is actually from his appearance on Austin City Limits. Keith also was a great bluegrass musician that started playing as a teen with the legend Ralph Stanley. Shame he had such a alcohol problem that killed him so young. ✌🇨🇦
Got to admit, the first time I saw your channel pop up, I thought "British Guitarist" would equate to a metal or punk snob. I was wrong. Dude, you get it! It's all about great song writing and execution! Great video and channel! I've watched several of your vids and you know music and have a great attitude. You are educating people in a good way. Kudos bro. Just subbed. Keep doing what ya doing!
I just saw this on You Tube. thanks for doing Kieth Whitley he's a favorite of mine who left us way to soon. Thanks a lot man you do such a great job, and here's a great Kieth Whitley song to check out, it's called Wherever You Are Tonight, thanks again my man. YOU ROCK!
What a voice....totally gifted! Keith would have to be one of the greatest country singers I’ve ever heard! So sad he passed away so young! Sensational Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀👌👍
One of my favorite songs to sing. Even though I can sing it in Keith's register, I actually prefer to sing it using the Allison Krauss version which I believe has a slightly quicker tempo (in the recording). I'd be really interested in hearing the UK cover version you mentioned. BTW, I really enjoy your videos and how you explain things. I can't read or play a lick of music, but I like to sing.
Keith Whitley was one of my favorite Country Music Singer and had all his songs he ever put out. He is still missed to this day. I remember where I was at the time when he past away. My Wife, girlfriend at the time we were together when her sister came home and told us he had died. Thank you Fil for doing Keith Whitley, God Bless. Would you be willing to do a video by "Kenny Hinson" from The Hinsons, song "Call Me Gone" C. Wayne Brock California
Keith was born and raised about 10 minutes from my farm in Sandy Hook, Ky. His family are great people and were crushed with the news of his passing. Keith had so many great songs, even better When you say nothing at all. He died of Alcohol poison and was doing cocaine on the night of his death.
Hi Fil.. appreciate your analysis', thank you. I hung out with country music bands for years and even became their sound person, and they just know how to connect with each other when playing and singing, how to fade out and fade in which is so important for the voice.. they love their audience of course and show it by how they present...
Please do more songs like this and write and perform a similar old country song of your own for us loyal fans who have been by your side since the beginning! Keep it up Fil your the best ! :) 💯
Keith knew about 'dynamics' which is very important in good country music plus he had a new and better producer Garth Fundis at the time. Garth said he rarely had to do anything. On his last album most of his vocal tracks was first take, I think Garth said the most tracks he did vocally was 3 takes. No I was not on this show cause i'd taken a year off in the summer of 88 for personal reasons. I was to join back up in June of 89. You couldn't call Keith a perfecionist,,he was just that good always. hardest thing I ever did was went to his funeral. Thank you for spotlighting Keith. By the way,,he's in the Country Music Hall of Fame now. Long time coming.
His vocal phrasing is similar to George Jones his tone is like Haggard, as someone said in the chat , hard to beat his message being communicated Wow , great
I love this song! I haven't heard it in ages. I did not know that Keith Whitley died. So sad to learn this ... I have been watching a bunch of your videos and thrilled to see some country artists since I love country music as well as rock and many genres of music. And I absolutely love your cover songs. I love watching the expression on your face when you are watching and listening to guitarists and musicians play. I admit I have a serious girl crush on you. I just love your passion for music because it mirrors my own passion.
The first time I heard this song, Billy Bob Thornton had been up to Philadelphia Mississippi to visit Marty Stuart when he got back he had a demo of this song on a cassette tape. He borrowed a portable panisonic cassette player from his high-school library. At Thomas Jefferson Academy. This was around 1972. I thought he was going to wear the cassette out.
I always find your analysis informative and interesting but I must say I love when you smile while watching the clips . How charming !!! Shows how compassionate you are . ( not hitting on you or anything I am old enough to be your mother ) Thanks for the channel .
Hey there! Love this. One correction, Carson Chamberlan who mostly plays Steel Guiter, is playing an instrument invented by Steel Guitarist Paul Franklin's Father, and it's called a Pedobro. Basically, a pedal Dobro. I worked for Keith, and can tell you that there's no Steel Guitar in this song. Love your review!
He died of alcohol poisoning in 1989. I'll always remember because I was pregnant with my youngest daughter. Heard it on the radio & everything just stopped. Very emotional.
Beautiful song and beautiful analysis ! I love how you smile when the artist does. It's seems as if you are right there with them, which in a way you are!
Excellent points about the band's role. Also, I noticed that Keith got so much range while hardly seeming to move his head. Your point about his microphone proximity explains much. Keith came out of Blue Grass and much of the discipline is there, but I am still glad he went Country.
My cousin played Guitar (the other Acoustic Guitarist) in this band and video. That's him to Keith's right. He also taught me how to play this song on Guitar. He (my cousin)also played little short runs (single picked notes) also in unison with the piano licks under the dobro. Its little more complicated, than your showing here but not much.
I just love Keith Whitley. I also just love that the two (two?) guitars worlds can co co-exist. I can keep myself very interested at this level but it is not for everyone. I just mentioned to one of our FB supporters about the upstroke, and now Fil mentions it. Thanks Fil.
If you really want to hear a master class in country Honky-tonk music please go listen to Keith’s final album “I wonder do you think of me” his vocals on songs like “Talk to me Texas” “Between an old memory and me” and also “Tennessee courage” and “ Turn this thing around” The nuances in his vocals with that album is superb. Keith is so missed. They called him the Kentucky bluebird for a reason. Thank you so much for covering Keith.🎶
Keith's biggest influence by far was the late great Lefty Frizzell. By his peers and music critics Lefty is considered the greatest C&W Honky Tonk singer of all time! Merle Haggard, George Jones and even Keith said this! You can hear Lefty's influence in Keith's voice big time. As great as singer as Keith was; in my opinion Lefty is even better.
Tim Foust does an awesome rendition of this song......He is in an A Capella band called Home Free.....🥰😍🤩😘....Tim sings it while playing the piano.....But u all need to Check out Home Free....An awesome country A Capella Band.....
Keith was going to perform in my hometown of Victoria, Texas but the show was canceled because of his death just a couple of days earlier. Was so pumped about seeing him, but that didn't come to pass.
This is one of my favorite singer and song, thank you for covering. I like hearing the way you cover the different music pieces. His wife would be a good one to cover too.
Great job Fil I watch a lot of your analysis videos and always learn things. This song really defines the word subtle and you bring out so many facets of that. I have been trying to do this song on acoustic and vocals for a long time and just couldn't seem to get it, but your comments and demonstrations on guitar gave me some really good ideas.
Great analysis video on Keith Whitley. I can only guess that the reason Keith has a "Modified" G chord and "Barred" A chord is probably learned from his Bluegrass days with Ralph Stanley and Ricky Skaggs. The tempo is lightening fast on alot of those songs. Even just playing rhythm you would have to be quick on the change while playing Bluegrass. Alot of "Boom Chuck" (Bass/Strum-Bass/Strum) That sounds like a good Analysis video to do. The Bluegrass Boom Chuck.
'This analysis and history was particularly special to me. Keen layers Fil! GREAT song that might come with many many years to (try to) express to a mate. Seems Randy Travis might have been influenced by Keith Whitley stylistically?' Thanks (again and again...) Mr Fil
Randy Hayes his guitarist has a youtube channel and it's got plenty of his rare performances and he can give you more depth about his singing style and the way he liked things arranged.
Wings of Pegasus analyzing Keith Whitley? Oh yes now we're gettin' somewhere! My all time favorite singer with a golden voice that is unmatched! This was a fantastic performance Keith Whitley had on the infamous Austin City Limits, the Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble show from 1983 was the first time I've seen the Austin City Limits stage, countless bands and artists have been playing there for decades to this very day and both Keith and SRV's music have been a massive impact on my life for as long as I can remember and left way too soon, I don't know the man I would be today if I hadn't heard or grew up with their music. The best live performance of this song I heard from Keith was the Ralph Emery show where he was playing his first two #1 hit songs that same year and it's also on UA-cam, this is my favorite video I've seen from you yet.
I love Keith Whitley. Such a moving voice, so many great songs, so much talent cut short too soon. Keith did a gorgeous cover of John Denver's song, "Don't Close Your Eyes." Vince Gill began writing his beautiful tribute song for Keith, "Go Rest High On that Mountain" a few days after Keith's death. He, Patty Loveless & Ricky Skaggs performed it many times. Vince was just devastated by his friend's death from alcoholism. A timeless classic. ua-cam.com/video/6jXrmAKBBTU/v-deo.html
So so true.. I actually got to see Vince sing Go Rest High on That Mountain in the '90's....... emotionally it was just too much to see Vince, he was in tears, and so were all of us in the audience.
Such an extraordinary song. I hanker for the days that songwriting was a craft in its own right. Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz wrote this and, let's be honest, one way or another it was going to make it out there into the world of success. This was one of the songs that brought me into country, though Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and John Prine were more influential. But I can say I heard it when it was a hit. Imagine how I felt when Ronan Keating covered it? Let's just say "Not Good"!
Listen to Keith sing "Don't Close Your Eyes" from this same show and you'll be amazed even further. No telling how big he would've been if he'd lived. Probably the best pure voice to come along in country music in the last 40-50 years.

"I'm No Stranger..." is my favorite Whitley song, too. Great metaphor and clever wordplay and rhymes. "It's hard to keep believin', I'll even come out even."
@@highnrising And the vocals are amazing.
If only Keith would have lived. I can only imagine how big a star he would have been.
He would've been right up there with George Strait... hell, it might've been Keith that took the title of "King of Country Music" -- had he lived.
@Cody Yehuda you're definitely right, nobody gives a shit. stop spamming and get a real job you fucking loser.

Mine too 😊
Arguably the greatest male country music voice ever.
No argument from me. His voice has a rich quality that’s so fine.
I guess Cash fans would disagree. Or Jones fans. Or Strait fans. Or...
I agree
Fil, you have taught me to “listen” to truly appreciate the band …drummer, piano or guitar… as they interact with the vocals… Watching YOU enjoy all genres of music makes me love watching your analysis… Thank you…
Keith and Lori- what a beautiful couple. Love your commentary, Fil 💖
I saw Lori Morgan in concert a short few years after he passed. She was equally a talented singer..... I couldn't stop thinking as I watched her how painful a loss it must have been for her to lose him. She put on a great show, very strong vocals. She and Keith were so good together.... 🌟

And just a couple of years earlier, Schlitz and Overstreet had co-written the country song of the year for 1986, Randy Travis' "Forever and Ever Amen."
This song is the result of songwriting genius. Yes I think he was joking with his comment on giving them a break.
You can see a bit of a smirk when he says it. Don and Paul have many many songs to there credit, and did at that time already. The audience knew it as well.
Schlitz and Overstreet were monster songwriters, a Nashville audience would certainly have gotten the joke.
Paul Overstreet is one of my favorite song writers, he doesn’t get enough attention for his music.
One the greatest country singers ever, miss him.

Great singer, great musician, great hair and great smile. Rivaled only by Fil 😎 🎸

I love Keith’s Kentucky accent.
I was so glad to anticipate this analysis video. I loved Keith Whitley and this song especially. You are so interesting Fil in educating us who sometimes know nothing about the mechanics of making music.
His vocal range was out of this world.
Dude could sing smooth like Vince Gill and deep like Waylon Jennings in the same note. Its crazy
I am so glad I came across this video. I'm a huge Keith Whitley fan, from when he came out, solo.
The analysis and breakdown of all the collaboration and the way the band dials down when he is singing and dialing up, at the right times. Great video and thank you!

Always loved him sing😢❤
Great analysis video on Keith Whitley. I can only guess that the reason Keith has a "Modified" G chord and "Barred" A chord is probably learned from his Bluegrass days with Ralph Stanley and Ricky Skaggs. The tempo is lightening fast on alot of those songs. Even just playing rhythm you would have to be quick on the change while playing Bluegrass. Alot of "Boom Chuck" (Bass/Strum-Bass/Strum) That sounds like a good Analysis video to do. The Bluegrass Boom Chuck.
Damn I miss this one Fil. awesome analysis my friend. Love some Keith Whitley
'This analysis and history was particularly special to me. Keen layers Fil! GREAT song that might come with many many years to (try to) express to a mate. Seems Randy Travis might have been influenced by Keith Whitley stylistically?' Thanks (again and again...) Mr Fil
Not sure if Randy was influenced by Keith as much as they were both heavily influenced by Lefty Frizzell....and of course others.
Amazing man! Love him so much!❤
🎙🎤 Beautifull voice🎸🎸pretty sound....great video for analisys...congratulations👏👏👏👏👊🤘
How many would gladly quarantine with Fil? 🙋🏻♀️

Impressive analysis and demo as usual Fil. Thank you
I love Keith Whitley.

So so true.. I actually got to see Vince sing Go Rest High on That Mountain in the '90's....... emotionally it was just too much to see Vince, he was in tears, and so were all of us in the audience.
Go Rest High on That Mountain is one of the most beautiful , gut wrenching songs I've ever heard.
I saw Keith in concert about a week or two before he died! He was a great performer!
He was from my hometown in Kentucky
Such an extraordinary song. I hanker for the days that songwriting was a craft in its own right. Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz wrote this and, let's be honest, one way or another it was going to make it out there into the world of success. This was one of the songs that brought me into country, though Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and John Prine were more influential. But I can say I heard it when it was a hit. Imagine how I felt when Ronan Keating covered it? Let's just say "Not Good"!
Nice work. Such good analysis
Love this program, Fil is always so generous in his analysis👍🏻Has made my life better😇
I miss Keith. What a loss. There should be a movie made about his life.
I remember where i was at when he passed.he was very underated
Allison krauss version is so pretty.
He was great.
Love the diversity.
I've already told you that....but there it is again.
