I have this lens for years and really like it. My auto focus stopped working all together at one point but I was able to fix it myself. There are tutorials on youtube, but you'd have to disassemble the lens completely including the electronic with it's flex cables. If you want to prevent the focusing problem all together, leave the lens hood on at all times, even when stored. The problem with the lens is that it has an aluminum frame inside that deforms when you bump the moving front element into something. This front element can be protected by leaving the hood on.
Thanks a lot for this important info. I had the problem, had it serviced a couple of times before I gave it up. I never had a lens hood on it, and it might have been the aluminum frame that you mentioned deformed.
Always storing the lens with the focus set to infinity, and thus the focus mechanism fully retracted into the lens' main barrel, also protects the weak focus collar from bumps.
The same has happened to my lens. It seems to be a fairly common issue with this lens. Hoping to try fix mine soon. They need to remake this lens with these issues sorted
Just bought this. The vignette was the first thing I noticed. It is very dark at the edges. More so than any lens I've ever owned, but I'm fine with it since I always add a vignette anyway, and a natural vignette looks better than a digital one since it exposes correctly and you get a good dynamic range in the shadows.
I personally also like a natural vignette, especially for portraits, but if you want to remove it, or make it les obvious, applying lens correction should help 🤔
Mine broke after being a trooper for many years. The inner lens barrel was so deformed i can't fix without ordering the part. I ended up getting a good deal on a sigma 50 1.4 hsm ex but will still order the part i need to fix my beloved canon.
Amazing review. Real nice mood. Just got a f1.4 and tested on my Canon 6D and EOS R. On the 6D the focus is hit or miss at 1.4. I would shoot 3 frames a least to be sure one or two are good. On the EOS R, it nails focus every single time. It is amazing at 1.4. The only downside is the low contrast at 1.4 (at 2.0 it is great). I'm really satisfied with it!
Hey how is the autofocus for this lens with the r, if you don’t mind me asking? Also have any samples online with the r at 1.4? I’m debating purchasing and making prints but I just want to make sure the prints will be shap
Is this the go-to lens for portrait photo's? Im looking for a lens that can maximize the depth of field effect, to shoot people on streets with fully blurred backgrounds. What is a lens you would recommend? For cheaper prices.
50mm f1.4'mü yoksa 85mm eşdeğer f ? Hangisini tercih edersiniz? Hangi yönleri ( ...... açısından kalite ve ........ açısından ise portre, düğün, vs kategorileri ) düşünerek?
I was wondering if I would buy a 50mm 1.8 STM in addition to the 1.4 for a smaller and lighter configuration, but from what I see on flick the bokey of the 50mm 1.8 looks harder... I think I'll stay with the 1.4! 😉
Hi Cristian...great video review, helpful...and great voice to presented...I ordered one mostly to travel lightly , the 1.4 f stop and i found now he can be soft at the opening... but my question is : is worth it when I own an 24-70 mm f/2.8 L USM lens? Thanks
Depends. If you want to do portraits, I'd much sooner use the 50mm f/1.4, as it will give you more Bokeh. For most other applications, I'd just use the 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM.
it is absolutely worth it. i own both. especially when shutter speed matters. IF it is well calibrated on your camera, it's superb at f1.6. All lenses come a bit tilted, and if one corner is blurrier than the other, it's easily fixable by shimming at the mount. No lenses come perfect. I had to shim all my lenses, all of them, to go from okayish to perfection. The internet is full of bad reviews of 50mm f1.4 by Canon but I love mine.
Hi Christian ! Thanks for your videos. Could you help me with this one : Canon ef 50 mm f/1.4 usm vs canon ef 85 mm f/1.8 usm (in my range of budget)? Which one do you recommend for pictures of people dancing or any occasion indoor in a low light conditions?
The 50mm f/1.4 opens wider, so more light can get in, more background blur, but it'll be harder to land sharp focus at that f-stop, especially if they're moving. The 85mm f/1.8 allows in less light at f/1.8, but it's more zoomed in, as it's an 85mm. I'd personally got for the 50mm f/1.4 if you can get close, and the people will be mostly stationary (standing or sitting down), and maybe the 85mm at f/1.8 if they're moving around, and you need to keep more of a distance. Hope this helps :)
Absolutely 👍 You might struggle a bit if you're doing flat lay photos though, as the lens is quite zoomed in, as it's 50mm. If your camera also has a cropped sensor, then it'll be even more zoomed in. A kit lens would actually work better for that scenario, just released a review on the Canon kit lens if you want to see it. Otherwise, the 50mm f/1.4 is great for food photography.
did you ever try the lens with your eos 4000? If so, how did it turn out? I have a eos rebel t1oo 4000d but considering getting the lens if its worth it.
I had this lens and sold years ago when I had my 6D. The autofocus had like a 50% hit rate for me at f1.4. Had too many misses for me to use it. Have you used it adapted to any new mirrorless camera? I would get it again if autofocus with mirrorless is better
Never use this lens, its terrible and so incredibly unsharp under 2.0 that you might think there are some lens elements missing. No wonder you can`t focus wide open, it just can`t get a lock on.
@@ghostlyamp Nope, it was filmed with a kit lens, the 18-55mm, because it has IS. the 50mm f/1.4 does not have Image Stabilisation. The photos were taken with the lens though.

It's irritating that Canon is refusing to make an RF version of this lens. I am willing to spend more than $250 but not $2300 for a good native 50mm lens. Given my preferences, this EF lens just doesn't work.
@@christianskyes I certainly could, but the improvements of that lens are only quite marginal compared to its EF counterpart, which I could get for bargain bin prices. I'd prefer something like Sony and Nikon do with their 50mm offerings (more expensive but noticeably superior to Canon's).
@@kamrynbennett8198 What shutter speed do you normally shoot at? As a rule, the shutter speed should not go below the focal length of the lens. So if you're shooting at 85mm, you should not go slower than 1/85 (or 1/136 on a crop sensor, or as close as possible ).
