Yes, it came from the Phoenicians. They were called the "Purple People" by the Greek. Phoenicians were merchant traders and the fabrics from the dye were very valuable.

They were heating up the brine with the snail extract for over 10 days inside of a lead pot. So lead shoud have been reactivated with the content.
