1 pass topping & ploughing | Valtra T214 & Lemken Juwel 8 OF Pro | PPO Lelystad

  • It is always a very satisfying sight to see a green field full of cover crops being turned over into neatly laid down brown furrows. Whether you agree on the merits of ploughing or not, it does give you a feeling that the farming year has ended but a new one is upon us.
    We join up with PPO Lelystad, one late November day, when they were doing just this job. Their black Valtra T214 is hooked up to a Maschio flail mower on the front and Lemken Juwel 8 OF Pro six furrow plough on the back. The latter being new on the farm this year. Via the CCI terminal all plough functions can be electronically adjusted through Isobus. This is what the Pro suffix stands for. Rather than using bolts for adjustment all controls are under the fingertips of the driver.
    Autumn 2018 has been a challenging one for Dutch farmers with low yields due to a spectacular dry season. Even now it is still very dry. This field grew winter wheat in 2018, after which a cover of oil seed radish was drilled to increase SOM and prevent Potato Cyst Nematode (PCN) to spread. Next year this field will probably grow a crop of sugar beet.

    I think everyone is missing the beautiful point, he is using the practice of green manure. By cutting the forage ahead of the tractor, then deep plowing all that leaf matter in it will decompose slowly over time, it aerates the soil and releases valuable nutes for the crop. Such as nitrogen. This farmer is employing a sustainable land management program, this man is a hero for the earth, well done sir!

      I think if your family were to adopt the green manure method, you would not need as much fertilizer, nor would severe droughts affect it as much. I was raised Amish and a love for the earth was instilled in me at an early age. I was taught to farm and one thing dad did was make use of green manure. He did this by choosing the field that he would plant in corn the coming year, and he would plant buckwheat, as soon as the buckwheat was six to eight inchs tall he would plow it under, and plant a second crop of buckwheat, and repeat the process. Then for the third plant towards fall, he would plant rye and allow it to over winter, then in the spring he woul plow the rye under and plant his corn! If your family were to adopt the green manure method you would double your harvest, the reason being that buckwheat is the best crop for fixing nitrogen into the soil. If your family were to do this to one field every year, you would save thousands of dollars in fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides. It's time to go back to the old ways, and stop polluting our earth, it gave us life, let's treat it with the respect it's due! Thank you.

    Can someone explain to me the added value of chopping it and plowing vs. just plowing it like I always do ? Plow kills cover effectively for me .

    • @Agrifotodotnl
      @Agrifotodotnl  4 роки тому +3

      By using the flail mower to chop up the cover crop it can more easily be broken down in the soil by soil life. Otherwise there is the fear of creating a thick math of cover in the furrow bottom.

    • @123gimmedatbeat
      @123gimmedatbeat 4 роки тому

      Agrifoto why would that matter ? It would break down very quickly being lush and green , have you seen negative crop response from too thick of a cover mat being Plowed in ? Ever ?

    • @Agrifotodotnl
      @Agrifotodotnl  4 роки тому +2

      @@123gimmedatbeat On our soils the conditions can quickly become anaerobic so the cover or straw doesn't decompose as quickly. If you want to use your fireplace you also cut down a tree and chop it into small blocks. If you do the same with a cover crop soil life can work it down more easily.

    • @Agrifotodotnl
      @Agrifotodotnl  5 років тому +1

    • @alexveldhuis6004
      @alexveldhuis6004 4 роки тому

      These ploughs typically only have 12 inch/30cm furrow width to help turn the soil completely and help bury the plant material. The width he is ploughing is roughly the width of the tractor, 6 x 30 = 180cm. Counting furrow number alone is not enough, their individual width has a range and this varies how much power is required.

      This is a crop of oil radish which is grown as a so called cover crop. It prevents nutrients from leaching and improves the soil structure. This is a very useful hybrid variety. It manages to attracts nematodes which can harm a following crop of say sugar beet. The nematodes will feed on the radish and die. Previously these nematodes would have been controlled chemically but there is no need after growing this cover crop. The plants are chopped up so the soil life has an easier job of turning them into nutrients. The same as if you would cut down a tree into small blocks of firewood rather than stuffing a whole tree into your fireplace.
      Hope this clears things a little!
