He doesn't 'try' to be fair, nor does he 'judge' - bar the subjective listening he just provides the scientific facts. It astounds me how many folk seem to scratch their head at 'unbiased' - sure he has plenty of negative things to say, why? because the audio industry has an INORDINATE amount of snake oil, much of which can be, AND NOW HAS been, unquestionably refuted by scientific analysis. The fact this man isn't met with absolute gratitude by audio enthusiasts is beyond astounding to me - literally the consumers themselves who are complete victims and being ripped off are doing the work of the sales people FOR them the way they jump up and down defending these unscrupulous buisness folk is one of the most bizzare things I have ever witnessed....

@@fwabble Hello fwabble. You're correct, but if you take in the depth & scale of snake oil, self interest & ignorance in this industry, then, as many wouldn't have the technical knowledge to refute what has just been presented, then you can't really blame anyone for adopting a skeptical attitude to all.

GR research remains assmad, and his audience of sheeple is ridiculous. I considered buying one of his open baffle kits, but when he can't take valid criticism, and refers to people who like to see measurements as "flat earthers", I'll spend my money somewhere else. Imagine calling people flat earthers while you're the one slinging snake oil.

But music has soul, emotions a human trying to reach other people's heart, that's not just defined by numbers, that shit satisfies or scratches an itch deep within.
Numbers give you an indication of a speakers ability to translate that, but they are two different things, you don't hear the numbers, your hear/feel/smile or cry because of the ability of someone else to convey emotion with sound.
Or hell, maybe you're right and it is just numbers 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nice review and very complimentery to Danny's own video where he then goes further with 4 more installments showing how to assemble and implement the upgrade. As keen followers of the GR-Research channel can atest, this is a very common issue with Klipsch (and B&W) speakers and the reason that owners send their speakers to Danny for upgrade / fixing. Interesting to see the more in depth analysis here

@@jackdale9249 I see Danny did an upgrade for the Klipsch Cornwall III, but the Cornwall IV I was supposed to have fixed some of those problems. I forget does he have an upgrade kit for the Cornwall IV, or is it just for the Cornwall III? Because I have the Cornwall IV for a few weeks now, and at times with the right music they sound great specially after adjusting the distance and angles--I should try raising the cables off the floor. D. oes he install his kits for you if you send him the speakers. They would be a beast to pack up and send to him--they were delivered by freight on a pallet. Alternatively I can just dismiss what he says about the "cheesy" parts (probably got the idea to use that word because most of them are yellow) and other things like bracing and padding affecting the sound and just enjoy them. I could even rationalize it by saying maybe the design just works with those parts and the lack of racing is part of the sound enhancement and resonance for vocals, not distortion. Just as they used to say that that people thought vinyl sounded better because they were used to the distortion. I think it was more than that. It seems to me on some music transfer to digital just does not capture everything, such as the soundtrack to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, even the remastered versions. Whatever it was, the horn music just sounded better on the vinyl, even though in the 80s I was listening to it on moderate equipment but with mid range horn speakers.

I couldn’t help but notice that dropout/dip when I first got the speakers. I used them for a while, got other speakers I like more (Heresy IV’s, then Ubiquitous v2’s I’ve upgraded the drivers/tweeters in) and took the 600M’s to my home in Tennessee where I use them while I’m building our house. In THAT setting, with a different preamp (APT-Holman, not the ADCOM GFP-565 I now use in my garage setup), they sound MUCH better about two feet from tongue and groove pine walls. A musician friend of mine commented on how good they sounded too. I WAS going to buy the upgrades from GR until I saw your video reviews here and decided to save my money and just use the 600M’s in my garage system where I’ve had them before along with JBL-125’s (with updated horn driver and subwoofers). Thanks again for going through the work, Amir. Much appreciated.

Excellent information presented clearly. So my takeaway is that since there wasn't a phase issue at the crossover point causing cancelation there, it would be just as easy to run the correction feature in REW on this speaker and generate a digital filter and run that filter in equalizerAPO, JRiver, miniDSP, BruteFIR or any other digital filter engine and get the improvement in frequency response. Adding the damping and I think you would have an improved result, as the high order crossover has better vertical off axis response. The low order crossover always destroys the vertical off axis response in speakers like this with the woofer and tweeter not coincident.

I 'got stuck' with a pair of the original RP600Ms when two well-known pundits named it 'speaker of the year.' I no longer trust either of them to give me the time of day. I immediately disliked the 600Ms, and it grew.
Almost a year after they arrived, Amir did his tests, and it was very easy to see why I disrespected the RP600Ms. His test measurements lined up exactly with what I heard.
Much later, Danny proposed his mod, which I was almost ready to pounce on until I saw the cost: $244 on top of the pair of speakers I had paid only $460 for new. Looked to me like good money after bad, so I passed.
I began to lick my speaker wounds and start searching for a pair of speakers I might like better. Just about then, Amir released his glowing test of the Elac DBR62s, and they were for sale at a discounted price. Long story short, I loved the little Elacs. They evoked music as I remember it, in concerts and jazz clubs, and they had none of the annoying character of the Klipsch's.
So... the RP600Ms found a stall, face down in the storage room downstairs for over a year. I had been suffering along in my bedroom with an ancient pair of Advent 8 inchers from HiFi's Jurassic period. In hopes of improvement, I schlepped the 600Ms up two flights and listened. At quite low (bedroom) levels, they weren't so annoying anymore. Not audiophile stuff, but not annoying. I've since added a little sub.
I'll go back and look at Amir's old 600M review to see what he did for EQ. The bedroom amp, a Denon PMA600NE, has a tape loop -- just begging for a little DSP. Film at eleven...

I agree, and I really like the positives implied by this review. I bought a pair of 600Ms based upon "flowery" reviews and after this am very tempted to update with the GR Research mod - to get quality parts, good instruction, and demonstrable audible improvement. I got the 600Ms at a very reasonable price.
For context, my main speakers are Bozak B-305s that are over 60 years old and are soo large as to be practically infinite baffle. I got them from my dad who had much more musical knowledge than me. As rear room/surround speakers I have Klipsch two RF-3-2s and the two Klipsch 600Ms. I have a significant background in DSP and acoustics. When I have time I try to critically listen from mono to stereo, and to at times what appears to be multi-channel cacophony, unless directed well by multi-channel formats such as for movies.
Otherwise, as others have noted, I would very much appreciate additional videos on the improvement of speaker measurements and sound by the placement of equalization hardware and software. I realize that these correction techniques are different, one is passive in the speaker and the other involves external power in the path; and the laws of physics can't be broken among the speaker and amplification.
As noted in a previous. comment, in, time, a low-priced "real-time" ie introducing no audible signal delays, wall powered equalizer placed between the amplifier and speaker may provide great options for individual speaker response correction. Can it play well, with receiver-hosted "room equalization: software. I'm totally ignorant of multiple speaker correction options that can work with/without additional room correction options.
As always, I appreciate your reviews and content that enhances audiophile knowledge and enjoyment! Thank you.

It just seems easier for the factory put out another poorly designed speaker, again and again, that impresses the uninitiated, then realize the errors of their way and look for someone like GR to make them listenable. And they have two or three more Klipsch in the queue for a redesign and kit for their networks. That was a month ago. Has Klipsch released any new speakers for GR to correct this month? You know I knew nothing about Gr Research until just by chance I saw him next to a pair of ATC 19"s to the right of a youtube page with the title "Finally! A speaker Danny likes?" I clicked on it and that was my first experience which then led to watching several of his videos. The ATC'19's are I think the only video of his that he doesn't redesign the cross-over, just replace the caps and some resistors with the damping material and his preferred connectors that I still, not so much have an issue with their efficacy, but the limitations on switching cables. I personally believe that Danny believes in the products he sells and that's fine with me. Now if I can find someone to do the mods for me or at least have him redo the networks and cut the damping material. I live in a condo now and really don't like doing this kind of stuff anymore. P S, I have basically a Park tool repair shop for my bikes and I now have a shop do any required work on them. Know anyone who wants to buy a few thousand bucks worth of tools? Willing do bargain.

Reminds me of why I started to build speakers myself. Had some trouble with my first pair of proper speakers I bought when I started working (after Univ. and military service) back in the late - 90s. Removed the plate with connection posts and found out that the internal wiring and the components of the filters were as cheap as they could be. The speakers wes a new pair of B&W CDM1 and I just upgraded the cables to a pair of Audioquests. Yesterday I watched Danny dissect the filters of a pair of new Focals - it seems to be even worse today (often masked by DSP/room compensation in today's setups). Nowadays I buy reputable active studio monitors (like my latests work computer setup, a pair of Genelec 8010a and RoomEqWiz) or I build myself, like my new subwoofer using the new Scan Speak 15" Ellipticor. "Control is better than trust" was repeated daily during my military service, still holds true in this context.

Nice work. I can see the value in this if you have these speakers and don't totally like the sound. Aesthetically they are pretty cool. Although if someone bought these I would imagine that they enjoy this sound..and nothing wrong with that, different strokes for different folks. And yes one could REW or EQ out the dips and valleys if they wanted while keeping the sensitivity the same, the MOD however also helps with the resonances (other than that mystery peak) and phase as well as some impedance dips. So I could see why someone that has owned these awhile and wanted a change would spend $250 for basically a new speaker. Having a more neutral frequency response is not everyone's cup of tea, but I think some people, especially younger, aren't sure what they are looking for or even know what they are missing when they buy these, reviewers said they were great 😃👍 You either love Klipsch sound or hate it, doesn't make you right or wrong, but it is cool to know that there are Mods out there that actually make a difference to the product. Videos like this are so valuable to the consumer.

Yes EQ fixes nothing. Contrary to Amir's nonsense, resonances are distortion. Anything outside of the original signal is distortion. If a speaker produces 10% distortion at -20 & 40Hz what do you think will happen when you EQ the 40Hz to flat? The distortion will skyrocket from the original 10% distortion. At the crossover, look at the ragged response out of band on the Klipsch speaker. Contrary to more of Amir's nonsense, it wasn't luck that the gentler slope produced less of the out of band ragged response.

Depends. Sometimes the source, like a computer or an RME ADI-2 DAC, the MiniDSP sources, will let you EQ at the source. Otherwise, like with a record player or a tape deck, the best place would be between preamp and power amp. Something like a MiniDSP processor, or a Behringer ultravurve would do the job well there. I’ve been a bit sceptical about GR Research’s ‘measurement over everything’ approach, particularly because he never auditions the final result. This article by Audio Science Review seems to suggest that GR Research may be actually right though ASR is also from the ‘measurement over everything’ school of audio thought. I’d be a lot more convinced if either of them actually listened to their results!
If the original design of this Klipsch speaker was so bad, why did their customers buy them? Didn’t they compare them with others before buying them? At the time, they must have liked that boom and treble approach even though us oldies have known about this pitfall for decades.
I think the choice of demo music can make a huge difference and I suspect Klipsch we’re aiming for the market enjoying a certain type of amplified pop music. You need to listen to accoustic music, in my case orchestras and choirs but it could just as easily be accoustic guitars or jazz, to properly judge a speaker’s ability. And I agree 100% with Emir that it is best to listen to the demo through only one speaker, ie no stereo which can disguise faults.

Would have been interesting to me if you A/B's the tube connectors during the subjective listening test - actually, seems silly to me that you didn't A/B them during your listening Amir - I would have enjoyed hearing your thoughts about them, good, bad, nothing or otherwise. Course, giving this idea a bit more thought - lets be honest - if you would not be expecting a difference, and maybe that was a factor in your thoughts about testing them, then maybe the test, subjective or not would be biased as you always point out - that is - our expectations cloud what we think we hear.

Thank you for the review Amir. I am curious though - why you decided to not use the upgraded binding posts? Was that not part of the kit cost? Seems a bit odd to me when you mention the cost of the entire kit, but then only test parts of it? It would have been cool had you tested each of the upgrades included in the kit individually e.g. measuring both with and without the No-Rez for instance to see exactly how much dampening it provides, as well as how much the new crossover helped.
Also, are you considering accepting Danny's invitation to go visit him in Texas? I think it would be cool to show a lot of people here who throw salt, that just because two people disagree - that doesn't mean you can't brake bread and listen to music together.

    • @AudioScienceReview
      @AudioScienceReview  2 роки тому +4

Company says the binding posts don't measure any different. I do not have the mating side in my measurement stand so went with the standard binding post. For listening, I do have a tube connector but terminating it is a one shot deal with crimp and soldering. I am reserving the one I have for a formal test. If I terminate it for speaker testing, then I have to fork over $50 for another pair!
As to going to Texas, no, I don't have plans. Danny just says come over to eat BBQ and listen to music. I love to eat BBQ but don't want to spend thousand dollar plus to fly there and back. :) He could entice me to go there by conducting the blind test of cables he promised us last year. If he passes that, then I would definitely go there to verify. Otherwise, going to listen to someone's system is not anything that I want to do. If I lived close to him, sure, I would go regardless but that is not the case.

Can someone help me with something that's been bothering me please. So I'm driving the RP600 though a reisong a10 tube amp. First I used the 8ohms outputs on the amp because the speakers are rated at 8ohms but the sound is quite thin, mids are too forward, bass not deep enough and the dynamics are a bit all over the place. I switched to the 4 ohm output and the sound is, I think , very good all as intended but at higher/highest volumes it gets distortions (muddy bass, blending on highs, lows etc.) . So, what should be the issues here?is the tube amp not powerful enough for 4ohms, even though at mid to high volumes is sounds great but if I push it more it gets distorted? On the 8ohms output I get more volume but it's sounds thin and undefined...thanks for the help

proper EQ with calibration mic open the eyes (ears) to another world, makes you understand the effect of room size, materials, reflections, speaker placement, correct a lot of flaws, brings things closer to neutrality. The audio world is just bigger, with more detail, like nothing is missing, it is full, with more air, bass faster, etc. If you have a bad resonance in room or speaker you can kill it just like a feedback destroyer would (narrow parametric eq), and even if you miss that small part of music it makes the overall sound much better. EQ result is objectively better (when done well) and not wanting EQ is like a religious error. There is no "pure direct" way to beat proper EQ.

Having done this mod I can certainly attest to the improvements that you are showing in your measurements. I hadn't seen testing on the reduced sensitivity and your results confirm my suspicions, but in listening I find that rather minor even with am 9 watt amp. You wouldn't have the issue of needing to drive them so hard if you had a pair. Your listening test however I find doesn't hold much value with only one speaker, the real benefit of this modification is fixing the phase issues and a really huge improvement in soundstage depth. Also you mentioned they are quite a bit heavier, a lot of that is actually due to the large aircore inductors. One other thing I thought was missing from your review was the notable increase in detail in the upper treble.

Headphones should indeed suffer a lot less from directivity issues so they are in general easier to EQ. There are some limitation though. For example boosting the lower bass might introduce distortion (it's something I quite often see in headphone reviews on ASR). Also headphone measurements are known not to be the most reliable. As a general pointer: there are quite some speakers that show good directivity so good candidates for EQ.
