    I managed to get several in N scale. Intermountain did a great job

    This is a great video. One of the main reasons I wanted an Intermountain autorack was to put cars in it. I hope they make the doors more durable in the future

      I too wish the doors were more durable. Very nice car though

    Great review! Too rich for my blood. Also, 33' wheels are correct for the older Bi-level autoracks similar to 89' flat cars. Tri-level autoracks are the ones that have the 28' wheels on them.

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  4 роки тому +1

      Actually from what I gather from info...only the older open bi-level had the 33" wheelsets. These enclosed bi-level ones are the same height as the tri-level...and should have 28"

    The detail of this line of cars is amazing but I remember older runs with doors which had come loose floating around in the box and side panels that had completely separated. I think I'd rather sacrifice a little detail for a little more durability and a lower price. Nice review.

    • @25mfd
      @25mfd 4 роки тому +1

      good point about the durability and lower price... but i wonder if there is a happy medium... the cars that can take the abuse of the hand are fixed with molded on parts that are tough to break but lack detail... flipside, the super detailed cars practically fall apart if you just look at em'... god forbid you actually pick one up... i have 16 of the athearn 13K acid cars... i sweat everytime i move one... i had to adjust my ops so that i have open staging with those cars to avoid removing them from the layout... i just can't take the risk of breaking something off

      I honestly can't complain about any of them...I still like the old Walther's kits.

    I have a mixture of the Atlas(articulated and multi max), Intermountain(1st & 2nd run), Walthers and Scale Trains. I'd have to go with Atlas and Walthers for durability and put Scale Trains & Intermountain autoracks in last place but rank Scale Trains(Rivet Counter) and Atlas(Multi Max) tops as far as detail accuracy. Thanks DG Modeler for your review. I like to weather my models and Walthers(Gold Line) are probably the best to work with.

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  4 роки тому +1

      I agree! Honestly I still like the old Walthers kits...

      They're easy to mask off different areas and weather and not worry so much about most delicate parts coming off. Keep the reviews coming.

    Intermountain put the 33's on them because the draft gear would have to be raised, causing a whole new mold to be needed, and it just was not worth the cost!!! All you have to do is put a spacer between the body bolster and the truck bolster and you can run the 28's keeping the correct coupler height

    like you, I love the see through side panels. wow
    doors that open, well if you are making a bit of a static display, where you can leave them open all the time, pretty cool.
    brake bar on the wheel set. I can see that being a problem pulling 10 of them on smaller curves, be a derail waiting to happen.
    over all. Cut that pipe out of the way and a bang up model.. very nice.

  • @sebastianbarthel2393

    I picked up the conrail Version of these from the post office today.
    i was unsure about the side panels because on some pictures it looked to seem a little bit too "see through". but now i have to say it looks acceptable.
    And yes, trying to open the doors is a real thriller!😰
    i quit it after they were half way open.😖🙈

    I purchased the Union Pacific version and two of the doors were already broken off and I had a heck of a time trying to get mine back on again. For this type of money did not expect to work on something for so long right out of the package. I will not buy another one from intermountain. I will definitely purchase more of these but from a different manufacturer.

    I had a bunch of the 1st run, and steered clear of the 2nd run due to Atlas and Scaletrains coming up with their Autoracks. Glad to see Intermountain fixed a lot of the issues with the first run. Might sell mine and get some of these.

    Kudos to Intermountain to including Kadee scale couplers stock. Wonder why they chose medium shank 158s over longer shank 156s as with the Atlas

      So I was planning on doing a comparison video, but...not sure it's worth doing, since people can just watch the review videos. But who knows....I still might. haha

    Be nice to open them once to insert cardboard silhouettes of some vehicles. I think someone makes those as an after market product. 24 inch curves look pretty awful. Thanks for doing that test.

    Have 36" curves and do not have the issue with truck hitting the brake rod.

    since you can see through the side panels, it should look like there are cars in it.

    It's a beauty! But my head is still spinning over the fact that $82 for one piece of rolling stock, albeit big, is a good price. 😐
    I'm going to say that monster sized car won't look or work right on anything less than a 48".
    Love the louvers. That's nice stuff.

  • @25mfd
    @25mfd 4 роки тому

    nice vid... excellent model... you mentioned wheel sizes, for the record... it's not uncommon for the older bi-levels like in the vid to have 33 in wheels... tri-levels have 28 in. wheels.. the bi levels don't need the extra room for the vehicles they carry... the tri-level frame however is sunk a little lower as you can see the frame humps over the trucks... usually wheel sizes are stenciled on the rack for informing car dept workers... i didn't notice any such stenciling on this car

    • @DGModelworks
      @DGModelworks  4 роки тому

      The older open style autoracks sometimes had 33" wheels, but from my understanding the both bi and tri level enclosed autoracks used 28". There were no wheel size reporting marks on the model.

      @@DGModelworks if you get the chance checkout some rack in person... i tried looking on rrpicturearchives but pics aren't upclose... too far away... the intel i gave was from my time as a switchman for the CNW... bu that was back in the 90s... a LOT has changed since then
