You know... I used to love F1 when I was a kid and I loved Senna... my grandparents used to travel a lot to Brazil and one of my most prized possessions is a National blue cap Ayrton used to wear... that weekend was awful and I stopped watching F1 altogether... I think it struck me so bad that I didn’t even learn how to drive... I love cars and car culture but I just can’t drive and I always attribute that to seeing my favorite race driver die that weekend... I feel what you feel James...
do a series on “Do It for” Dale Earnhardt. the man was chasing a ghost his entire career and nobody can tell me he didnt go into turn 4 with a smile on his face seeing his son and friends son driving off into a beautiful Daytona sunset
There's actually a really good video about him done by UA-camr EmpLemon called "there will Never Ever be another driver like Dale Earnhardt". Check it out if you haven't.
The fact that Senna is somehow a Japan's racing people champ as well and his natural connection with some of the people there makes him more legendary to me
When I went to the 2018 Australian Grand Prix, I noticed all the official and VERY exclusive team stores, side-by-side. Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull. But there was only ONE driver store. And that was Senna's. Not any other driver stores in that area. That's how popular he still is to this day, not only in my home country Brazil but everywhere else. To the fans, it's not only about the numbers but all of the other Legendary package he has. I watched him dying live on TV at 9 years old and it deeply affected me, he was my childhood hero. Same story around the world, especially in Japan who also mourned his death very dearly. it was surreal and I think it changed mine and many lives forever, more than what we'd like to admit. I love that Americans are getting to know Senna. Most Europeans and Australians know him but with you guys it gives me hope one day Hollywood will make an award winning movie about (maybe Rush alike). You should look up "The Test" on youtube, it's a video of Senna testing Indy's Penske.
Such a terrible time. But it's led us as racing fans and racers alike to recognize and appreciate safety as part of the game. If it weren't for this weekend, many more would've died.
You guys do such a brilliant job on these podcasts. Like Nolan, I never really followed F1, but I am a motorsport enthusiast, and i feel sorrow for the loss of such a legend. I could hear the emotion in your voices and see the emotion on your faces when talking about the accident. Perfect team for these presentations. Bloody awesome. Stay fired up, be nice. I love you 🤜🤛🤘🏎🏎🤧🤧
Very heavy episode. The episodes about Senna are definitely my favourite until now. Keep up the good work, stay safe and big thanks for entertaining us.
You see, this right here? This is why I love and respect the dudes and gals at donut. I haven't even had the chance to read the thumbnail yet....I just see the title: "the worst weekend in F1 history" and instantly think to myself "nah, nothing could be worst than when we lost senna" and click the vid...You guys did me proud once again ❤️
I don't know if you guys will ever read this since the video has been released for months now, but thank you. I'm Brazilian, and I've been living in the US for one year and a half now. I was ten years old when he died, and it was like somebody from my family had died. You guys made me cry. Not only because I saw it happen and I remember it well, but by the way you guys visibly felt it too while recording this. I've been a big fan for years, now more than ever. Pure respect for you guys and the way you approached this. Again, thank you.
I think the emotional response we get retelling this story is because as car people and motorsport fans, we relate to senna. He was so much like all of us, and that's why we miss him so much
Nicely done guys. As a 39 year old guy that used to watch the F1 races live and also watching that dreadful race in Imola I can completely understand how hard it must have been to put this series together. As a big Senna fan (not just the driver but also the human being) I am glad you guys managed to cover his career and celebrate his many achievements. The F1 championship lost a great deal of interest with his passing with the cars becoming more and more advanced, but the world lost a great individual as a whole.
I haven't watched yet, but *absolutely* will later today. I was wondering who was taking bets on whether James cried or not...and what's the spread? ...love ya' man.
Guys I've been powering through your podcast from the beginning while working on my project, and this episode, I honestly had to take a break. You guys are excellent, with great chemistry and great insights. Thank you.
When they looked in senna's car after the crash they found a rolled up Austrian flag, Senna was planning to wave it after the race in honour of ratzenberger
I'm an Uber driver and I always listen to these podcasts on Google podcasts, I wish there was a way that I can leave ratings and a thumbs-up or something on that platform, I always have to come back to the UA-cam video to give it a thumbs up
Great series chaps, I was 6 months old when Jim Clark was killed at Hockenheim, Clark was the legend that I grew up reading articles about when I was a young fella. I tended to be a Prost fan in the Eighties because of his smooth "As slow as possible, as fast as necessary", attitude. In an era when the cars were terribly unreliable and very easy to break. It was a driving style very similar to Clark, Fangio and later Jenson Button. Ayrton Senna was divisive, but so exciting to watch, whether you loved him or not. Rather like The Michael was and Max Verstappen is today I have heard a legend that Ayrton had James Hunt's Austin A35 van on 2 wheels around Belgrave Square in London late at night around British Grand Prix time one year.
Awesome job guys. I was 6yr when he died so the details of his early career as F1 driver and some of the curiosities you guys mentioned are new to me (even though I'm Brazilian, shame on me...), so well done, it left me in tears. Looking forward to see more like this! PS: the Sega trophy is the coolest thing ever!
Bothered me the last 2 ep’s too. I’ve always heard it pronounced with accent on the first syllable. Mánsell. Agreed. And it’s a freakin superb podcast.
I don't know about you, but when I imagine James doing a Fatality, I imagine him shooting lightning bolts or the like or running over his opponent with his Golf mk4 screaming "moh powah baby!". As for the nolan, I imagine him simply adjusting his glasses and instantly the opponent explodes in a milk explosion. And Joe, well, spontaneous combustion sounds interesting.
The morning before his death, Senna apparently found comfort in his Bible, reading a passage that promised him that God would give him the greatest of all gifts, which is God Himself. When i heard about this... 😢
Small comment for video game fans: Sega was also sponsoring Williams at that time and one of the liveries had a painting like if there was a hole on the cockpit where you could see Sonic little legs on the pedals, like if it was Sonic driving the car. Pretty awesome. i was 13 y.o. back than and grew up playing Mega Drive/Genesis.
Just a heads up. If you guys ever do the stories of Jim Clark and Dale Earnhardt, which are equally as epic, they are also tear jerkers. A tragic ending to legends in their prime.
Senna definitely didn't die on impact, as he moved his head once after the crash and the head of the F1 medical team Sid Watkins recounts that Senna sighed after they lifted him from his car onto the ground. The authorities also maintain that he was still alive in the hospital, and that they actually restarted his heart once at the hospital.
i feel as if prost and senna’s relationship was like brothers, always fighting for attention and favoritism from mclaren, hating each other, then after they matured they became friends again and respect each other
Y'all need to one on Dale Earnhardt Sr. No lie I cried when at like 5 or 6 years old I found out he died, I remember watching the race and seeing the crash. But anyways Let's DO IT FOR DALE #3
This was a great series but i gotta nitpick you forgot to mention how the driver he saved rushed to his aid when he crashed and forved his way passed marshals to repay the favour to no avail
Ayrton Senna is the greatest driver of all time in my book as far as raw talent and speed that’s just my opinion. Wish we could’ve watched him retire and live his life 😔😢
Update on the sonic trophy, mclaren have put it back on display. They put a twitter post on June 12,2020 so assuming this podcast came late to UA-cam, donut may have made it happen!
Ah balls.... I've only just ingested then deepest of deep Dale earhart episode... I'm not gonna lie, I got up for some tp... And now you have a podcast..... On the imola? Ratzenburger.... Senna....? I have vodka. I will endure.... You guys are the reason i watch UA-cam.
Loved this series but wish you huys had talked about his relationship with Doctor Sid Watkins, which was one of the most tragic parts of Senna's story for me. Regardless, Senna was the best. I have friends who aren't into racing or cars who I've shown footage of Senna driving to who can spot what made him different. You can hear his utterly unique throttle trace, you can watch the car dance. You don't need to understand driving or mechanics or grip to see he was on the absolute limit every time he was in the car.
I unfortunately hadn't had the opportunity to watch F1 due to NASCAR politics...but we won't go there. 😒😡 When I was FINALLY able to watch F1 programming on television, it was the season before at the very race that the "Professor" announced his retirement from F1. I remember Senna making a B line straight to Frank Williams' pit garage to secure a seat for the following year. I'd been watching Schumacher here and there when I could watch on TV. I couldn't wait to see how the two would measure up to each other perfect conditions🤤🤔. Unfortunately it never really came about. Schumacher turned out to be an incredible talent, so much so that F1 became boring for me at times. From what I've seen and heard, even from the mouth of Michael, Senna was the BEST! It sure would've been great to see them BOTH together at the height of their games....I sure do miss them BOTH...😔
You know... I used to love F1 when I was a kid and I loved Senna... my grandparents used to travel a lot to Brazil and one of my most prized possessions is a National blue cap Ayrton used to wear... that weekend was awful and I stopped watching F1 altogether... Nolan: "Fuggit... I ain't afraid of no ghost."
mclaren brought the sega trophy out of storage
I love donut and everything y'all do but these podcasts are my favorite so far
When ever I'm working on my car one of these are playing, so I totally agree with you
The fact that Senna is somehow a Japan's racing people champ as well and his natural connection with some of the people there makes him more legendary to me
His input on the NSX I’ve always found to be super cool as well
He was so popular there, he even got his own soundtrack!
I went and looked up the "Lap Of the Gods" clip mentioned and man, Senna is driving in the rain as if he was racing in Virtua Racing.
It's like he was on slicks and every one was on inters (in a dry track)
Watching that lap gives me chills, obviously the good kind of chills. 💪
The whole senna's carreer in formula 1 whould be a great anime.
Can't change my mind.
Anime? Senna? They are two words I wouldn’t expect to see in the same scentence lol
The closest thing we had in Anime, was a small his helmet in Taira Capeta's anime series...
Not to mention his Senninha comic books and later a cartoon series.
Yeah... The whole if you don't take that space then there's no pooin in racing.... Totally not what he said but you'll find it.
Chin up James. You'll be fine. Stay healthy
Don’t ever stop making these videos boys. 🙏

That Sega Sonic trophy is the coolest shit I've ever seen. Damn, some people just don't know rad even when it slaps them in the face.

That would be tremendous
Oh yeah I don't know if you guys know this but They put the SEGA trophy in the MTC almost 1/2 weeks ago.
It's strange that Senna and Earnhardt both had raised concerns of the safety of their cars very shortly before they each passed.
Look at lauda before his terrible crash. He tried to stop the race, crashed, almost died, came back and vied for the championship.
Those guys were drivers of unparalleled caliber, they knew something was amiss
Your series are really great podcasts. They are really great for nursing a hangover.
Nolan " I ain't afraid of no ghost" Sykes
The morning before his death, Senna apparently found comfort in his Bible, reading a passage that promised him that God would give him the greatest of all gifts, which is God Himself.
When i heard about this... 😢
Apparently they found a rolled up flag in his car, I am not sure which flag tho (I think Austrian?) which he planed to wave when he won 😭😭

Yes it was.
Yes. There are like only 3 drivers with their names on cars

Did James ever discover that the head and the heart are an actual band and the music they play is pretty close to what he described?
