I think your milage will vary with the puller based on how seized up the ferrule is. My next stop is either the $40 specialty tool or a plumber.

Make sure you are using it right and your ferule puller isn't bottomed out!

Does the ring deform the pipe? If the ring is removed can I switch to a press on fitting or is the pipe deformed?

It shouldn't, you can always switch to a SharkBite fitting if they make a compatible one. I would try and remove any stuck on residue to ensure a good seal.

Question, I'm confused as to where did the water in your hot water tank go? You cut off the water to house but isn't there still water in a hot water tank that didn't drain out into that quart size container in basement? I need to replace hot water valve under bathroom sink.

This question makes me think you should hire a plumber 😅🤣
If you shut off the city water, your domestic water system is no longer pressurized. You only have to drain out the volume of water in the pipes that is roughly the same elevation, or higher, than the shutoff valve you are trying to replace. Usually this is less than a gallon and can be drained at the valve too, it just sometimes gets messy. Have a big enough bucket or pail ready!

Is it necessary to replace the compression nut and olive or can you use existing one

I am in a panic and don't have $350 quoted. I don't see a knob on hot water tank going out to turn off, so do I have to turn off and drain out 50 gallons of hot water to replace hot water valve under under sink? Even if I shut off water to house the tank is still full of hot water to spew out right??

Keep a brown paper towel under the new compression fitting or put the towel in the plastic bowl.

BRASS NOT COPPER FERRULE, other than that your tutorial was very good, also for those who do not have the puller have them reuse the old one(nut and ferrule), just replace the valve

That won't work if the thread pitch of the new valve's compression fitting differs from that of the old valve. The only option then is to remove the old ferrule and nut so the new nut and ferrule can be placed on the pipe stub.

You should have put teflon tape or pipe dope on the ferule ring and not the threads to prevent leaks. Preferably teflon tape.
