How To Connect an XLR Mic to Computer for Beginners
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- WARNING: I no longer recommend using a USB soundcard to connect a microphone to your computer. It has become too unreliable due to manufacturers altering the components used in their products as well as alterations to operating systems causing additional problems. The only method of connecting a microphone to your computer that I recommend is with a USB AUDIO INTERFACE that is designed specifically for that use case.

You're right it sounds like you're screaming
It's a great video.
I have a Lenovo thinkpad laptop.
I have a dynamic microphone.
What is the best and economical solution.
World of Childrens it depends on what sound quality. My experience with USB/XLR cables are all cheep and kind of suck no matter witch one you get.the break in a couple of months and sodering wears out. Sound cards are also dodgy and sometimes won’t work at all. If you want something nice just get a cheep behringer audio interface. They supply phantom power (which dynamic mics don’t need) but you can expand in the future if you want to get a condenser mic. If you really wanna get crazy get a small usb mixer with a couple of channels. It all depends on what you want, but I recommend a AI

+Podcastage I would also recommend maybe checking out the products prices on newegg.com. Usually I find their prices to be better than Amazon, and newegg has an option for free 5-7 day shipping on almost every product on there. Just a suggestion though.
DodderyCobra315 I have prime on amazon so I get free 2 day shipping. =)
+Podcastage Ah I see. I (and probably many others) don't so for one of those USB Soundcards (the better one you said to get) it was $9 with $8 shipping, and unfortunately newegg was out of stock on those specific Soundcards.
I like this guy, he's the only youtuber that begs for likes but in a polite way, he's earned a sub from me.
i needed this, its 4 years old, but its still VERY relevant
hi @podcastage, I just bought a Shure sm57 dynamic mic, I tried connecting it directly to my computer (iMac) using an XLR to USB cable as your first option, set the Sound Input to USB PnP Sound Device, set the Input Volume to max 100%. But when I talk close to the mic, the recording sound is rough (not clear/good enough) the input level indicators do show very little (~3-5 bars) movements, and if I thump my finger to the mic, the level indicators go to the max bar level set. Should I add a USB sound card too, will it work better, or a USB audio interface is expected to get the best performance?
Can i plug the 3.5mm to xlr to my pc directly or do i need the phantom?
I dont wanna make a wrong purchase
best to get phantom power
@@Alecxace depends if the mic needs it!
You can. BUT, you'll lose a hell load of power and sound quality. The bossy signal conveyed from XLR (look at those 3 fat-ass pins/holes) will have to squeeze-in into the skinny 3.5 mm. It's like inserting a Ferrari engine into do-it-yourself mecanisms of a Fiat Panda, you could start-up and drive upto 20 km/h, but then hitting 25 km/h you start feeling the erratic noise and movements...
just got the btsky bm-800 with the stand and a pop filter, can't wait to use it!

Question what computer or laptop compatible with this AKG P120??
You explained it SO clearly when everyone made it so complicated thank you 🙏 I already own both a dynamic and condenser mic and I bought the xlr to usb as a stop gap while I save up for an interface. Now I know I can make an informed choice thank you sm
Thank you so much my dude! I had no idea I needed another power supply for my condenser mic and I was looking to completely replace huge chunks of my computer because I thought something was wrong! You saved me so much money, time, and effort, that I wish I could do so much more than like the video. This did wonders for me!
soooo do I need a preamp? I have heard that they are highly recommended
What are you using everything for? What mic are you using? What interface are you using?
Podcastage I am going to get the at2020 and use the mixer you recommend. I am going to look into a cloud preamp to plug in
hey brother, i really need help, ive got a shure sm58 and cant get it to work on the mac, mmm it sounds soft and has a whole bunch of noise, like u think i need a preamp or wtf?
Im getting a Samson c01 and how do i connect it to a computer, i have a behringer uphoria um2, will it work?
@@ivanchodaz7144 did you figure out how to effectively connect your shure sm58 to your computer?
So I bought a BM-800 on Amazon and it came with a USB sound card but any time it's plugged in there's a really high pitched noise. Also, the mic was super quiet (although it was massively overshadowed by the ringing). I figure it's just the crappy sound card so I bought the one in this video, but I'm concerned about the low mic volume too. Could the sound card be causing that too? I'm running XLR to phantom to sound card to PC.

OMG I WAS SO DUMB I WAS USING A XLR TO TRS CABLE AND WAS WONDERING FOR AGES WHY MY MIC WAS NOT WORKING NOW I HAVE ORDERED AN XLR TO XLR CABLE AND IS COMMIN THURSDAY THIS MAN SAVED ME
so i have a condenser mic shipping i n bout a few days and would i need a usb sound card to order too, bc its a xlr top 3.5mm and i can plug the 3.5mm into my mic slot
Gyan HD how did it go?
How would I set up foldback / sidetone from the mic so I can hear myself through my headphones with any one of these setups?
Do i need to use a soundcard if i use the xlr to 3.5mm and plug it directly to my pc? Btw i'm using a dynamic microphone
What dynamic mic do you have
No, it’s a output not a input
So yes you need a soundcard
Just wandering if your pc has a port for the 3.5mm jack can you just plug it straight to the pc??
Also for the XLR to usb would this work on a PS4 ???
If only I had more than one thumbs up to give. You are obnoxiously likable and give straight to the point reviews and opinions. Some might say you're repetitive, but I think that's a good thing, as it gives a fair assessment for each microphone. Again, you rock sir.
What is better to get with a condenser microphone, behringer Um2 audio interface or simple phantom power supply ????
Nice question, some technicers say that phantoms are bad, behringers is nice.
what if i directly connet my xlr to 3.5mm cabel to 3.5mm jack of my laptop with out any phantom power or sound card
if it is a condenser microphone then nothing will happen. works only with dynamic microphones.
Hey, man! It's been a year but I'd like to thank you for that video. I got myself an UM2 and it's the best thing for me. Matches exactly to my needs. So, thank you very much.
What if you plug it straight into the pc instead of the usb sound card when using the phantom power supply 3:56
thanks I'm gonna get an XLR to USB cable for my BM-800 mic. Been a sub for a long time you never dissapoint
That will not work unless you get an xlr to xlr cable and phantom power supply as well.
Podcastage your first setup method was only XLR to USB soo? It was just like the other ones, and u said urself to get it
If you're using a DYNAMIC mic. Not a CONDENSER mic which is what the BM800 is.
Podcastage i tried that but i cant get it to work!
So In conclusion which one is the best?
They say at the end
Very useful video. This is one of those subjects where there seems to be a lot of knowledge but no one has bothered to do much in the way of tutorials, I was looking to connect a bass guitar up and I've just got my hands on a Behringer BDI21 DI preamp box with an XLR output. Luckily somebody was kind enough to walk me through the process. I bet you've helped a lot of people.
a few years later where tech is a bit more modern than mid 2016 but how to i connect my akg p220 mic to my vt-4 transformers from roland, is the transformer a amplifier or do i need something else to power the mic more? then would i connect it to the transformer? i am confused, thanks
Thank you for saving me. I'm new at this things and i was lost in the middle of all this videos saying too much but nothing. Untill i watched your video. Thank you :-)

My Samson Q2U Dynamic mic is hooked up to a Beringer Uphoria and works great I think. Thoughts on that setup are welcome😀
Sounds like a great setup to me.
@@Podcastage Thanks. Love your stuff!
Hey man quick question is it true that an XLR mic is quality wise by far better than any usb microphone??
You can also use a USB interface equipped mixer. Has phantom power, good preamp. Plus more control over what your input sounds like.
Hi, uhm I bought the shure sv100 dynamic mic, when I plugged it to my guitar amp (just mic and cable, no adapters) it sounded pretty good but then I plugged it to my computer with a 3.5mm adapter, and it sounded like crap pretty much... So, the XLR to USB will help? I saw you used the sm58 but I don't know if that could make much difference in the audio quality with my sv100... I just want to record games and stream, what I found is that the dynamic mics could be better than condenser ones because they pick up less noise and my computer fans are very loud!
I wanted to buy the CAD u37 (i'm Windows user) or the Snowball Ice but I just want to know if buying a XLR to USB cable with my sv100 will help to get at least a similar quality to the Snowball Ice or the u37, so I can save more money!
Nice videos! I just suscribed to your 3 channels :)

Dynamics cannot work in pc. You must very simple circuit for work. Search google: "Dynamic mic to pc circuit" it is one transistor simple circuit. You can add 100 k variable resistor for gain control
Omg finally a good video about this 😱😍 thank you so much 🙏🏻
I'm using a usb audio interface, the u-phoria UM2. I can hear what I'm speaking into my microphone through my headphones but I cant record vocals through the microphone. it seems that even after selecting the input microphone, I cant hear anything come out of it.
Hey there, do I need a phantom power supply though for an NW-800 microphone? Or can I plug the 3.5mm plug into my pc and it will run? Thanks

AFTER I'VE SEEN A LOT OF VIDEOS RELATED OF THIS, YOU WERE THE ONLY ONE THAT EXPLAIN MY SITUATION, I got a brand "neewer" sound card and i just bought a phantom power to the same audiotechnica's microphone, and it works perfectly, thank you!
Really glad to know that it works well for you. Best of luck on the recording.
Why do you need an external sound card. All desktop and laptop have it already?
I alraedy have a great soundcard. I just need to power then, and XLR to Mini Jack....
Thanks again, you have helped me no end! Your videos are fantastic, funny and professional...

For some reason when I connect my microphone to my PC, I didn't get audio from my headphone.
Frieza1 What are you using?
@@coolguythematrix5 I appreciate the reply after 1 year but I've figured it out lol
Haha
I recently purchased a Neewer NW-800 and I am experiencing a lot of hissing/noise in the background. I do not have any Phantom power connected - just XLR to 3.5mm plugged into my headphone/mic jack in my laptop. Would this be the cause of the issue? I am also on windows using Realtek Audio (not Realtek HD Audio because I am a worried that changing the driver will cause more problems). I have been using Audacity noise cancellation but it really muffles the audio so I don't know how to fix this issue. Thanks.
what about if i just plug my xlr to 3.5 straight into my motherboard that has an inbuilt sound card (realtek hd audio in this case) ?
can you tell me why the USB sound card is needed with phantom supply.
www.geeksrising.com/faq
you sir, are awesome, that link answered everything! and with the help of your video I'm not going to buyers remorse! thank you.
why cant we just connect the aux (from the phantom power supply) to the pc mic jack (via the aux -- 3.5mm mic jack) straight away??
In order to explain this first you have to understand how a condenser Mic is different from an electronic one. The shortest answer I can give is one is self charged while the other needs more power and charge to operate properly.
Im just curious about using the usb sound card, if im using the asus pro gaming mobo, doesnt the sound card decent enough or i should still need and external one ?
This video is exactly what i needed at the moment! i wanted to know how to connect the shure sm58 to my pc. Thanks a lot!

Can I do the first set up for the AKG P120 microphone? I’ve heard it only works on the phantom power supply?
If my mic is plugged in like your 4th method and I know I did everything right but sound is awful and full of loud noises do I need USB audio card od can it be in my motherboard?
Was it just me or did all of the methods sound muffled?
Because of the mic
"Go to your audio input settings and make sure the right device is selected"
I am not able to find audio input setting in my pc. Where are they?
Just wondering Can two XLR microphones connect to USB recording interface to computer, plus another USB microphone connect to computer, all three microphones record together.
Thank you! I think out of all the videos, this was the easier one to understand. I ordered the Neewer NW-700 Professional Condenser Microphone & NW-35 Suspension Boom Scissor Arm Stand with XLR Cable and Mounting Clamp & NW-3 Pop Filter & 48V Phantom Power Supply with Adapter Kit from amazon and put it away because it was not working. After a few months, I am able to put it all back and hope to start something. I followed your steps and ordered the USB cable. I hope this will work and then I can see if my microphone will work or not. I see the input microphone moving back and forth when I talk.

***** Great decision.
best youtube channel about mics, audio interfaces and computer sounds
If we buy audio interface then there's no need for buying phantom power as it already have in it , right ???
Usually yes. But i guess you have to look at the description of the interface you want to use. There are also some which deliver a lower phantom power than 48v. However, most microphones which need 48v phantom power also work with less (for example 15v). But then you will have to increase the gain which will of course also increase noise.
@@somerandomdragon558 yes the interface I'm looking for provide +48 v of the power like behringer and focusrite..
Why USB soundcards is not a good solution now?
David Maslovaric, because the sound card’s only significance is to power it. If you are fine with a mic REALLY close into your face, just use the sound card. If you aren’t okay with it, you can just get a phantom power supply. If you don’t have a PPS, the audio could be really funky, and you’ll need to be in a very quiet room.
Hope this helps!
Isaac Jones, unless your pair of headphones has a microphone, then no. Just plug it into the audio jack. But if you want to use the mic from the headphones, (if you do have one) you need another pair of cables. Here’s the pair of cables you are going to need: www.amazon.com/Headphones-Convertors-Headphone-Microphone-Simultaneously/dp/B01M8G1U0C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1521209930&sr=8-3&keywords=headset+adapter+for+pc ; if you don’t know how to use it, here you go. If you have a microphone on your headset, plug your headset into the splitter adapter (the port on the end that splits the two other wires) then, plug the two 3.5mm cables into the correct spots into your sound card.
Hope this helps!
i don't want to buy the phantom power supply is usb soundcard good enough for just games i don't record videos
you saved me
Thank you so much. Been going through a bunch of expensive audio interfaces trying to find one that works with my shitty computer I didn't know it was as easy as just getting a USB adapter for XLR to get alright sounding audio just to record demos at home. Bless ya and preciate ya.
I'm using Behringer XM8500 and connecting to my laptop using XLR to USB. The voice is clear but there is static noise from it, I seem to can't make it disappear no matter what I do.
There are no visible cable or microphone hardware fault from what I see, there are no possible other devices that could causes the static (I tried to move around with the mic but the static remains consistent). I even bought a USB port hub thinking that the static may comes from directly connecting the USB to the laptop's motherboard.
Does anyone have a fix for my problem? Thank you in advance.
You need to add more voltage to your microphone setup. Try looking up "cloudlifter" videos to understand why.
@@DerPlayer1237 hi thanks for the respond, I tried to search for the cloudlifter, it is more expensive than the average audio interface so probably a no go for me.

Can someone PLEASE TELL ME, do you need an external sound adapter to use any of the sound interfaces like the Behringer UM2? OR can you just plug directly into computer?!?!?! Reason I ask is because when you go to buy the Behringer UM2 it says you need a sound card....
I help oversee a youth jazz ensemble. We cannot meet in person, so we need to purchase some mics for the students to use to record their parts individually and separately. I want to purchase regular mics (not USB mics) that we will be able to use later on in their regular mode. What mics and interface do you recommend for sax, trumpets, trombones, acoustic piano, drums, and amplified bass and guitar?
I wonder, if I would need a balanced or an unbalanced XLR to 3.5 mm cable for use with the Samson mic you've mentioned?
Thanks for the video.
I have a question : Is the cable balanced? Is the cable used for the bm800 balanced? 3.5mm to XLR
I noticed that pins 1 and 3 usually come together on the XLR connector. Pin 2 goes alone.
Thanks for the awesome video. I've been debating which setup to use when I buy an xlr, but now I know an audio interface would be alot more suitable. Thanks again sir.
