Kyle, I saw this about 4 years ago. I have an old Iver Johnson that had seen better days and you gave me the desire to give it a good cleaning and a bit of resto. The gun turned out so well that sometimes I take it out of it's sock and just admire the beauty and craftsmanship of the people who built it over 100 years ago. It still looks and shoots great. Thanks for your inspiration.
Thank God for people like this man, what a beautiful restoration, keeping history alive and functional...
Nicely done, two suggestions, 1-gloves, and 2- save all the scrapings and sanding dust and mix with the wood glue when you glue up the cracks, I have done that on a couple stocks and it is very good at blending and preventing a stain shadow line. But again well done giving an old shotgun a new life.
3rd suggestion.... blow your nose
Love the video Kyle. I just restored/refinished my Dad's old H&R break open single shot and his old Winchester single shot .22 rifle. Both served him well in feeding his family of wife, and 8 children back in the day. Took many squirrels and rabbits home and to the skillet. I cherish those old firearms and though retired to wall pieces, both in a pinch could still come in handy. Nothing better than saving a piece of history. FYI, some brake cleaners have oil in them. Best to read the labels to get the ones that don't. God Bless !!
Wonderful! Nice work Danny! Great story as well my friend
Just found one of these in my grandma's house. She says it was her father's. It's in better condition than this one was, but it certainly needs some TLC. I'm glad to find this video, as it makes the task feel much less daunting
An old tip is using broken pieces of window or plate glass as a scraper. Tape it on one side for safety reasons and throw it away when it's dull. Great video!
Great job. Shows real skills. The only thing is gloves would not only keep chemicals off the skin but oils from the hands off the work piece
Speaking from the experience of a retired US Army soldier I can tell you that canned carborater cleaner is a primary resource for firearms cleaning, at least in the units I've served. My Beretta 9mm was field stripped, cleaned with the carborater cleaner and wire brush, NEVER oiled or lubricated in any way, reassembled and ready for use after every 15 day patrol. Very nice restoration on the shotgun.
Thank you for your service.
This video is what inspired me to try and restore an old shotgun for my father-in-law, it worked out well and he loved it! Thanks for the great video!
Beautiful work mate, first video of yours I’ve watched and I’m loving it!
Broken window glass makes an excellent scraper Lee Gibbs
Great video brother thank you for sharing it looks like a 1905-1920 champion 👍👍👍👍👍
Found you're video looking for info on exactly the model shotgun you have, gotta say it came out rather nicely, I was gifted one exactly as the one you have and I'm going to restore it such as you have done, great vid !! Thanks
Excellent job sir!! I really enjoy your content, mostly because I love restoring old guns just as you do. Keep up the great work and keep the excellent content coming.
Great job Kyle ! You saved another antique relic !
Wow Kyle! What a job. I was so absorbed by your experience that I was smiling with pride with you at the end. Now I have a better idea on what to do with my buddy’s Bay State. Thanks again.
I'm just starting to refinish my brothers singal barrel. Thanks for sharing your work friend.
Really nice restoration once again! Love it. Cheers!
Might be my favorite video ever... what a relaxing journey in rediscovering that old shotguns beauty
Nice job Kyle. Reminds me an old Baikal single shot that I had maybe forty years ago. What a work horse it was. Thanks.
I used the razor blade on a few of my own Stocks, Perfect way to make That nasty old finish Go away. Thanks for sharing that.
Kind Thanks! I fixed up a 1901 H&R 12 gauge, very similar to yours. Indeed, they are a very nice good feeling shot gun. I used shellac for the walnut stock, a number of coats then steel wool and paste wax. Hard to beat those old aged walnut sticks for color and patina! Great vid! Many Blessings and Happy Holidays! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Love your videos Kyle, first one I seen was the Sks video and been hooked ever since. Keep em comin!
Old Plastic gift cards or even old credit cards are good for making little disposable tools for cleaning and getting glue way down in cracks!! They are great for cleaning groves like on semi auto slides. They will get a drop of oil or glue just where you want it too. Great for mixing a little epoxy or any two part mixture. Use a 1/4 of a card or so as a spatula, and another card as a mixing platter. They cut into anything you want with a pair scissors. Hook tools, aline small springs anything you can imagine. Within reason. Cheep and easy.
Thanks for the tip!
As an old ad hoc two year citizen of Argentia , Nfld, 1957/1959, really enjoyed my stay there. Had many fun times in St. Johns, got into trouble a few times ,nothing serious. Also spent a few months in Ships Harbor at a remote USNavy post.
Enjoyed your video, am a gun collector and former hunter. Thanks a lot ,stay warm.
Great job restoring a piece of history 👍
Good job Kyle! Enjoyed the video. Stay healthy my friend!
if you don't have gloves, you can always stick some wood dowels in the ends of the barrel to make handles. Also good to run the steel wool through a cleaner, like alcohol, to get rid of any oils or etc.
Still nice job, turned out great.
Well done. It shows you have a love and passion for your work.God bless.
Good work. I recently did an over and under 12 for my son. A thoroughly enjoyable and educational process. I'd recommend it!! 😁
One warning. Never ever do any gun bluing with the springs anywhere near. I learned this the hard way. Reblued a gun and tried to avoid the springs but either the debluer I used or the blue solution leaked onto the springs and EVERY single spring on the gun broke in half within 24 hours.
sweet restoration, I kinda like that the old character of the gun was maintained.
Wow! Really impressive. I have an old 20 gauge that needs similar work. I hope I get as good of a result. Thanks!
Kyle, came out looking great, good job.
Great shotgun for a youngster to start out with. Nice job on the resto!!!!
Or a grown feller' to go for a walk with!
Looks good, I've done several of these in similar condition and a wet towel with a clothes iron would bring most of the dents out of the wood. I like to use Acetone for degreasing the parts to be blued.
Great show Kyle. If you get to do another gun restoration, I'd love to see you try combining a mirror polish finish with bluing.
Excellent job. I'm working a very similar Shattuck shotgun
Excellent work - thanks for sharing!
Nice video. While it's obvious you are not a gunsmith, no insult intended. I find your videos interesting and entertaining. I enjoy to see home hobbyists taking on any interesting repair/restoration. Keep up the good work.
NICE comment
Beautiful! Looks a lot like my Harrington and Richardson Model 1908. Serial number suggests mine is a 1940.
Keep it up skipper!
Nice little cooey, great job on the resto. I have a feeling that old gun will get lots of use once it has a custom leather sling.
Think it's a cooey?
Dandy job on that old gun Kyle, well done. Love the videos.
Beautiful work Brother!!! I'm inspired 👍👍👍.
A Lovely Job! Kind Thanks! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
I've got to give that a dubble thumb Kyle, it went from next to trash can to a keeper. Old single shots are some of my favorites. If you want a darker blue in the future. BIRCHWOOD CASEY has a ultra blue it comes out deep black. A short brass drift is a requirement for the gun owners tool box my friend !!!!!! ( No steel on steel )
EEEEEK DONT DO THAT HA HA AWESOME JOB !!!
Glad it worked out for you. I've been stuck with a few real winners ( JUNK ) GREAT VIDEO !!!!
Thanks a ton Roger!
I'll look into the bluing that you mentioned!
Beautiful outcome!
Nice job, fun project as well.
Great job very well done I have a couple of questions i bought 2older shotguns they are in really rough shape my question is both of the barrels when locked in the receiver they appear to be loose they stay locked but are loose last question one has a bolt in the foregrip it's good one has no bolt just a small pin what a groove where the grip snaps into place the problem is it's not in place on the barrel gaps thanks for sharing
Very nice sympathetic refurbishment, i like it 👍
You are a master at your craft... good on ya!
Thank you Paul!
The shotgun came out looking just like you wanted. Classic. Be around long after we are gone. They are almost indestructible if a little care is taken.
Nice job Kyle!
Read alot of the good coments that i use but 1 more tips get some serenges and needles for oil and glue to get into wood cracks and oil parts. great job
Nicely done
Great job Sir!👏🏻💯
Came out looking great
Kyle, it helps to take pictures along the way, that way you will remember how to put it back together. Think the word you were looking for is "Patina." Looks good to me. Ray, Oklahoma
That was my suggestion too. I take my truck apart in little pieces, thankfully I take pictures of everything. Great video. Will be back...
Never knew you were into boomstix. Nice.
Now that is one super comfy intro if I ever seen one.
Great job!!
I know she's an old video but holy smoke fish bud that's a beauty !!! 2 thumbs up Kyle
Excellent, excellent! I'm a sucker for rifles and shotguns. Keep up the good work. I'd like you to do more gun restorations if you can. Awesome!
UA-cam hates guns, and gun channels, so I have been laying off on the gun content, but we'll see where 2019 takes us :-)
favoirite layout? I gotta love lever actions but i love hearing others. I cant stand pumps, but there arent many pump action rifles😂bolt actions okay, but lever actions king!
Real men buy gun brushes and say "Never throw away old gun brushes" because they make fine toothbrushes.
Looks like my old winchester single. Great gun. Needs some love also
Hi there! Great video and lots of useful tips for an upcoming restoration of my own. Thank you for that! Just a quick question: I was surprised to see you shaving down the stock- I thought original wood patina drove up value on guns? It is just easier than trying to match it? Thanks again!
Great work
Looks Good Well done.
Nice video - many thanks!
Really nice job.
Great video Kyle, you've inspired me to give my Cooey 840 the same treatment. What bluing solution did you use? Cheers
I believe it's the Outers cold blue?
Great job very inspiring 👊🏻👏
awesome work!
I have an old 40s Stevens 20 gauge that has a similar brake release lever.
Awesome video great job👍👍👍
A strong suggest about putting your weapon on wire wheel. Try a very stiff fibre wheel. Removes almost every imperfection yet is less likely to "burn" or scar the finish or patina.
Great job!! What's the color of the minwax tint you are using?
Great job. Makes me wonder if it's possible to restore my grandfather's old 22
It'd have to be pretty bad to not make it back!
Gloves help eliminate your skin contact. Great video.
Absolutely gorgeous shotgun! Wished I could do what you do there. Gained a subscriber
Thank you!!
Nice job on the Old 12 gauge. I have my G Fathers 22pump visible loader. Made in 1914- 15 if I am right. Shot many rabbit and squirrel years past. It still shoot true. Keep up the good work!
Awesome!
Well done Kyle!
Thanks Dan!
Nice job on that old Stevens Dreadnought.
Hi Kyle, love your content and teaching style! What kind of knife/steel would you specifically recommend for caving designs into a hickory handle? I have big hands so that has to be a consideration too.
Thanks Kyle, keep the video's coming!

NICE comment and question
Looks good, a wooden dowel inside the barrel is a good way to not touch it after cleaning. I use either Acetone or Alcohol to remove oil from the steel. A heat gun moved back and forth will evaporate any residue from cleaning and the steel will more readily accept the bluing. Just don't get crazy with it and make it too hot, just what works for me.
thanks for the help Keith!
nice job, use your camera on how to remember to reassemble things. I have to do that myself as sometimes it could be days before I get back to it.
How would you restore a barrel that has pitting or would you have one remade to fit
Does the salt water near by make it hard to keep things from rusting?
Beautiful firearm
You should invest in a altra sonic cleaner for those parts that you don't want to take apart like some trigger assembly or boxlocks you know what I mean I had a hi end pistol that I had taken apart and took me the better part of 3 hours to put back together and it took 1 min. To take apart
The first thing I look at in an old shotgun is state of the bore, if it is too deeply pitted inside not worth the trouble unless for a wall hanger or film prop.
Great job! I recently acquired 60's Winchester Red Letter .410 that belonged to my great grandfather. It was in an old box in an outdoor shed since the early 80's right on the coast. It is in terrible shape. I've never restored a gun, but thought I'd give it a shot. It looks to be in the same condition as yours, but with a lot more rust on the barrel. My question is, how did you know that it was useable without taking it to a gunsmith? I am trying to do this restoration well, but reasonable cheap since it is my first restore (my mother was going to throw it out, it was such a mess), so I don't want to add extra cost by going to have it checked by a gunsmith if possible. So, I was just curious how you decided it was in firing condition.
Awesome job, 1st class. She is a beautiful.
Thx for the video!!
brother a little advice to save you some trouble order a set of wheeler gunsmithing screwdrivers for about a hundred bucks you will get a lot of bang for the buck gun screws need hollow ground screwdrivers thats why you see so many mangled screws on old guns
VERY Nice job.
Shooting good for you !down here in the states we’re running low on ammo !
i've been looking to find out what type of shotgun i have acquired. there is no identifying marks on it but it does have one weird feature. It breaks down from under the barrel. you have to turn a large lever to the right 90 degrees. would you happen to know what it might be?
Over here on PEI I pick up 3-4 of these type of deals every time I visit my gunsmith. I've got like 5 break barrel singles in 12g. I did plan on restoring most of them but there they sit. I did end up getting one in great working order. Sometimes my aspirations get the best of me
That looks great tho. You've got more motivation than me haha!
Also, I really haven't had good luck with Outers brand gun blue. Birchwood Casey is what I've been using lately, it's a bit less streaky
Send some of those break-actions over to me!!
Kyle Noseworthy - Weiderfan
I actually would. Not 100% sure of the logistics of shipping non restricted through different provinces
Good job
