A political coming-of-age story and a stirring reimagination of what it means to govern, “Girls State" follows young female leaders - from wildly different backgrounds across Missouri - as they navigate an immersive experiment to build a government from the ground up.
Building on the popularity of their prior feature, "Boys State," which won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Documentary Competition at Sundance in 2020, Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine's "Girls State" is a heartfelt, provocative, and difficult look at gender inequality. A few of these intelligent, high achievers begin to have doubts about the program they put so much effort into when they are placed in a mock-government program with five hundred girls in Missouri.
It is rare to find a mirror perfectly angled to reflect upon a topic as significant as sexism. However, in true McBaine and Moss style, this film is a scathing portrayal of the state of the nation, painting no one person, problem, or idea with a single brush.
