A superb series that portrayed the humanitarian side in a war. It was truly a series well ahead of it's time.I remember watching it at school during the 70s but appreciate it more now especially with the well scripted dialogues. I will rather watch this series over and over again compared to the current craps on tv now that are devoid of any emotions and good lines, just mindless senseless actions!!
This show very much humanized both Soldiers....It showed a morality at the end...The thing about this show is that it sometimes lets you get a perspective of the other sides Soldier's point of view as well, even when you are trying to kill him....
randy109 - For the technology of the time, the moral and sentimentality of those days this show was indeed ahead of its time. As others have said, and I agree, much better than some the stuff/junk being produced today.
MarineCorpsSnake - That is true. Most German commanders near the end when all was basically lost, especially the battle for Berlin were just trying to hold the Russians long enough to be captured by the Americans. Russia was their bitter enemy and they know that they would not be treated well. In fact there are several units that purposely surrendered over to the Americans because they know they would be treated better. There is some really good reading out there on what actually happened.
A GREAT Episode of a GREAT Show! Some episodes are pretty far-fetched, but some like this one have a great storyline. Combat was ahead of its time. Thanks for posting all these shows. It truly is appreciated.
Let's go deep. No not. How many seasons? The great shots and audio. It was a tough shoot. The writing was great and based on true stories with fiction mixed. So many hard shots to set for camera. It was a docudrama. Great acting. Where did all the great audio come from? They would never have a budget today to shoot such a series. Of course I find faults watching. It was well written and ended with a lot of redemption. Redemption, not a bad thing.
@@andrewslone7236 5 seasons. The big shots decided not to spend anymore money. Too cheap. BIG mistake in NOT at least finishing the series. Such a loss!!! Guys are sorely missed!!!
GoldenWinger001 1 year ago I noticed that Hickman's M-1 had an M1907 leather sling on it. I have never noticed a leather sling on another rifle in this show. Did I just miss them? ================== Hickman probably picked his sling up at the PX are something.
So many of these episodes were more about character flaws in our own soldiers than they were about the actual war. Late 50's/early 60's TV spent much time on these types of things. Nowadays it's how gay are you and how many stupid remarks can the actors come up with. TV has gone backwards big time.

wait he was shot while running away .that means in the back , but the hole is in the front ?? if it went all the way through he would be dead .. its a 30-06 moving at 2500 fps and 148 grain round ..
Even though these firefights, were not real, it had to wear on your nerves, ( the sound of the firearms, the wadeing through water, crawling on the ground all the time.
I love combat but hate the California hills as a backdrop for northern France! I keep waiting for Opie and Andy to make an appearance!! Perhaps deputy Barney Fife will capture all the Germans!!

In the US Army there wasn't a left handed adapter for the M16 until the '80s. Maybe the top ejection of the WWII weapons allowed them to be fired left handed but I never heard of anyone being allowed to do that.
If your a fan of Classic Garand Rifle, the 30-6 and Nazi shooting it out. You'll like this episode. Also, you will learn how to run like a girl by following these simple steps.
I purely hate this BS of Saunders tossing his empty magazines. We were always taught to never throw away your empties but to keep them or at least keep track so you could reload when you got resupplied. A single-shot isn't worth diddly when the enemy comes out of the spider holes.
Not according to one of my uncles who was in France - all their ammo came loose via the Redball Express to intermediate Ammo Points where except for the 8-round enbloc clips for the Garands which came in bandoleers, it went out to units both loaded in mags/belts and loose. Why? Apparently depended on local policy of who was running the ASP's in a particular area....

I found it quite touching the way the German officer encouraged the young guy at the end.

Kudos to Hickman. He played the part perfectly!

The German lieutenant was a very decent , good, and wise soldier.
Saunders is the BEST squad leader anyone could hope to have.
Of course, Saunders knows! Amazing series, truly amazing. Thank you for posting.
Clean conscious.
Like the German commander said , one moment of weakness at the battle does not make you a coward , its the lie denying the moment that does .
@2:42 we see Sgt. Saunders change the clip on his Thompson from inside his jacket. So now we know where he gets his mysterious unrelenting ammo.

Yep...a real bad case of "constipation". ha !!! Guess he never had to make a moral judgment, before. Good acting by Hickman.

There's alot of leather slings on there on the garands.

Yes. lol. I've never noticed a rifle on this show that DIDN'T have an M1907 sling. =P
There is a hell of a lot left handed firing in this series both US and Germans. Odd for armies that trained (forced) soldiers to fire right handed.
Bill B not so...

I BEEN WORKING FOR 50 YEARS AND THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.
you don't need to shout about it
What does working 50 years got to do with anything? You must live in Germany. Working 30 years is a nightmare.

There is marine ww2 helmet
No. Saunders helmet is covered with a cutoff from a camouflaged cargo parachute. It is not a Marine helmet!

***** if im not mistaken when they resupplied they picked up loaded mags from a box. i have seen Kirby reloading his BAR mags though.
Yep, both ways. Whatever, however Ordnance sent the rounds up front.
Surely , but it does look cool when Sgt. Saunders tosses that used magazine away like that . It's entertaining .
remember this is the 1940s. the mag cost the government a quarter and when he goes to get more ammo it comes IN mags.
