True as someone also from the uk, it resonated a lot with me when he raised the question of where the (tax) money is going. I just went outside, and I immediately smelled smoke from the fires a couple miles away. although I haven't been directly affected, who knows what will happen with the upcoming winds later today. stay safe guys
Born and raised here bro… thanks for speaking out for our people in California. My family and I were lucky, we were about a mile away from one of the Evac zones. It needs to be highlighted for sure, because man, what happened was unprecedented but still, the amount we get screwed over by government and companies alike needs to stop.
Someone wise once told me Insurance Companies are 10 years ahead of actual time. If insurance companies are cancelling fire insurance 2-3 weeks before fires actually started. You know something serious is about to happen!
I know this is not your typical kind of video, but I want to say thank you so much for this. I'm saying this as someone from australia (we deal with bushfires here too) but it is so respectable that you have used your platform and influence to speak out seriously about this, to spread awareness and not make a joke/skit out of it. You really be raising the standards for content creators. definitely gonna stay a long time fan
I did a lot of homelessness outreach and advocacy during my time in LA. The literal majority of the budget, at least in LA county is given to the LAPD. All other services receive peanuts, specially PREVENTATIVE services. That goes for substance abuse, fire prevention, schooling, housing, you name it. It's a pretty rotten city council, in my humble opinion. I'm sad for all the angelinos going through this.
Additionally, the insurance issue in california has been worsening for the last 5+ years, at least since the campfire fires. There's been a whole lot of struggles between the state's mandates for coverage and what the insurance companies are apparently willing to pay for, so they've been straight up leaving the state every year. I'm not surprised that people got cancelled on. There have been similar issues with health insurance as well. I have no real insight as to why in particular other than the risk of fires is increasing every year with climate change and all that.

Damn, that story about the grandpa with just his minivan and his dog really is tough. You can tell Eddie felt that too, getting a little choked up while telling that story. Feel for the people of LA going through this 😥🙏❤
Imagine taking billions of dollars from people to protect them in the time of need, then when you need them they just cancel? How can that even be legal?? Insurance companies, at certain points you’re going to lose money that’s your whole business model, but it should be nothing compared to the billions you take in each year
When you buy insurance, they cover you for a set term/period of time. They aren't skirting any responsibility. They also don't just cancel you with no advanced warning. They tell you 3-4 months ahead of time, so that you have time to go find a new policy to take over the day your current policy ends. California's state government was negligent in their upkeep of this area, and when the insurance companies asked their state insurance regulators for permission to raise rates to compensate for the additional risk, the state told them no (basically implementing artificial price controls), so a lot of insurance companies chose to leave.
How do you expect them to make money? They're a business. That's the sole reason to have a business. This is the fault of California's price fixing. I'm not one to defend insurance companies, but this one was not their fault. Why should they be forced to raise prices for 99% of other people, just so they can outweigh the cost of covering people in a single area? That's ridiculous. Do you want everybody else in the nation to have an increase of their insurance just because of 1 area? Insurance is for unforseeable disasters. Not forseeable, city-wide catastrophes that have been happening at an increased, unprecedented rate. How many fires happen in a year in Cali again?
