Great review, and thank you so much! I was about to order one of those things and you just saved me the time, trouble, and expense! Keep up the good work.
These drill bits are awesome, try using it from the side, that's how they were designed to be used. Use a mains powered drill if your cordless is lacking. 100's of videos showing how to use it correctly. 👍
@@bryancounts9036 lmao 🤣 have you ever tried this product with the appropriate drill? Obviously not, just as the UA-camr hasn't. If you look close .The piece they cut is short and very dry you could split with a hatchet. If you try a 10 inch piece of green oak it won't split but get stuck.
They do work on small stuff. I live in a tiny home with a tiny stove that accepts 10 inch wood. It will split that if it’s seasoned and I set my drill to setting 1. But you really need to hold on because it will twist your wrists if not.

I watched a couple videos on adds for a wood splitting drill bit like this one, maybe just not the same brand. They didn’t begin on the end of the log, but they went in from the side near the end and worked down toward the other end. It looked like they kind of wiggled the drill back and forth from side to side as the drilled to help the splitting action along. You might want to try it that way. I see this was from 7 months ago and so may be already a case closed. Thanks for your helpful videos!

The advertisements for these bits show it being used on the sides of the wood, instead of straight down from the ends. It might have a different effect from the sides. I haven’t tried one of these bits though.
Great review! Don't let the know-it-all naysayers bother you. I wanted to find a review doing just as you did, working with common household tools. I didn't want to have to fire up the generator while camping to power my electric hammer drill! And your review confirmed what I thought, and saw on other channels, so great job! I'll stick to my 4 lb sledge and axe. With that combo, I can split almost anything! But suffering with this stupid arthritis, it takes me a couple hours to be able to function so I had some real hopes that the drill thingy would work. So I appreciate you exposing that drill bit for what it is. While it may work in "some" instances, overall, I'm not wasting my money on it. Thank you again for your fine review. All the best, -Mike
Thanks for that feedback and support! I have a manual foot press log splitter that I use. Really only good for the quarter pieces, or up to 8 inches round, but it makes quick work of them with minimal effort. I have a video of that on my channel too, you should check it out. Be sure to Subscribe too!
Those bits are incredible when used properly on the material they were designed for. These are great for splitting kindling sized pieces with a cordless drill. Trying to split a big log with it would be like trying to use a hatchet to split it, then claim that the hatchet wouldn’t do the job. They make much bigger ones that bolt up to a truck axle. You Jack up a wheel, remove the tire, and fit the base over the lug bolts and bolt up w lug nuts. This is the size you need to split logs. Or the ones that fit a tractor PTO.
It seems to me the problem is that you don't have an additional 90° handle on that drill to control the torque. It sounded like the drill could've kept going but when it was about to break your wrist you (quite understandably) released the trigger. Maybe try it again with the right drill like the guy in the sales video is using.
Thx bro you did this exactly as I would've done, I need something to split stuff down the middle, not put on their sides etc, just not for me, moving on...VERY helpful!
Okay - what happens if you use an electric cable powered that is designed to have more horsepower and torque than battery operated drills that are more designed for lighter weight construction work?
I think you may actually get some splitting, but still under certain conditions. I think most are going to attempt as I did and it won't be the results they are hoping for. I think even a couple tweaks I may have got a log to Crack, but regardless it wouldn't have been close to what I was hoping for.
just a tip - if this is no good at splitting wood , try using it in your drill and slip on a polishing mop - pretty much the same as a pigtail designed for the purpose - you might as well get some use out of it. I have axes for splitting wood - powered by my son - effortless ;
Did you try on the bark side, using on #1 setting and applying rotation that favors the thread?? I’m surprised you didn’t even try splitting them resting the log sideways. Please let me know is that works.
I did not, somewhat poorly executed testing I'd admit in some respects. But I also wanted it to split logs that hadn't been split in some way, I already have a log splitter than makes quick work of fire logs into kindling. Some have said that yields some.resukts...although I just had someone tell.me even with the corded drill it wasn't working so it's a mixed bag. My take is even with the best results it's not nearly what you would truly hope it would be. Thanks for watching and commenting. Be sure to Subscribe!
Yeah, I almost tweaked my wrist. Sounds like some people had slightly better results, but overall, it seems like something best for small kindling to be broken down even smaller. Happy the content was useful. Be sure to Subscribe! **SK**
Lol, I ordered a new bit and will be trying with a much better set, method and test so be surento Subscribe and stay tuned. I hope to shoot that video this weekend.
Why did you not place the wood on its side and drill into the bark part of the log? I know I often have to do this when using my old fashioned axe on harder wood logs for my winter heat. Show me the attempt using your cordless power tool with that drill bit.
@daVinciRobotSurgeon I believe it is and I did try that but it didn't seem to make a difference. I also though since it was so sharp that high speed would help it drill in first before starting to Crack but that was not the case either. I am set to do a new test soon with a real corded drill and some better wood so stay tuned and subscribe!
Im a 71 year old grandma. I have limbs to split. I'm on a budget. Wood is the way I heat my house in the winter. Any suggestions on how I go about this please? Im pretty good cutting the limbs with my electric chain saw. A gas one would be too heavy for me to use. Now I need to split and stack. Thanks.
If that is the case and you want to use this be sure to have a powerful corded drill. Honestly though, I like our manually foot splitter from Ocean State for like $50. You just use your weight to press down. I have a video of that on my channel, you should check it out. But otherwise I would buy a small electric splitter if manual work isn't an option. Just about any can do fireplace size logs. Of course it will be like 6x the price of the manual but it will certainly do the job. Hope that helps, be sure to Subscribe!
First only try this with seasoned (wood cut into 12 inch to 13 inch logs and drying for one year or more)… the wood pieces in this video look green in my humble opinion and need to dry for at least another 6 months before attempting to split).
Get the fuel version. What you have is regular consumer grade drills. The fuel is what contractors use. Also safety tip, if you are using a drill for that application; put on the handle that came with the kit. It will save your wrists.
Thanks for sharing, I saw some video clips of them using something like that before seemed to split the wood just fine. But I think they were drilling through cedar? Or other soft woods. Otherwise the reality would show "hah ain't buying that if it can't drill/ split through any type of wood a person would have" lol. Which that always gets me, when they advertise something, they only show what they want people to see, not what they need to see smh. Inerways again thanks for sharing.
Yeah, it's better if it's already fireplace size, you do it on its side, high torque, some suggest in reverse even due to the drill pattern, and really what you get is kindling. I have a manual foot press that is faster and easier than all that. It certainly didn't perform as I had hoped either. Thanks for commenting, be sure to Subscribe!
I just bought one of those and the best thing to do is lay it on its side to lock. That is if you go from the top that son of a gun is going to bind up on you. Good way to bust the wrist. My suggestion. Try it on inside to log on inside. Good luck!
Depends on how dry and what type of tree the wood is.Pine is knotty and heavily sapped and a soft wood, then that type of tree needs to dry for a while then that tool should work fine. But if it’s a hardwood tree like Oak and certain Maples, then most likely not.
You have to have a big hammer drill to use this thing those things are for Putnam drywall screws get a bigger drill the thing will rip through that wood. Or the one you order is a piece of garbage but I don't use a little tiny drills like that for this new wood splitter I already tried to put on a big plug-in hammer drill and it ripped through 15 inch long and cut up the three paces I put an extension on it to. No slouch that's your everyday wake power drill for inexperienced laborers.
One problem might be you have the drill at the wrong setting number one gives you more torque number two gives you more speed but less torque. You need to work with a tool like that. Give it a try and setting number one it is much stronger.
I should have started with one...or at least tried both. Idk if it just looked to well designed I figured it would just go, but it might have had slightly better results doing that combined with a few other tricks. I may give it a second chance test if I grab another one soon before we really hit winter.
Put the wood on it side. The way you’re doing it is like holding an egg on the outside of it trying to squeeze it and wonder why it won’t break. That’s the strongest part of the wood at the top 🔝
The only way this concept works is with large stationary machines. The best tool for home-owners is one of those electric-hydraulic splitters for about $300
The drill was spinning anti clockwise by the looks of the settings on the drill and the kickback direction when it was sticking. Probably wont make a difference to be fair as those tool bits are shocking but it might give it the slightest of chances 😂
That was the goal, to help avg buyers like myself and you. I was hoping it would work, I had no clue prior to the test. It's unfortunate, but I'm glad I could save you the trouble. Thanks for the feedback. Be sure to subscribe!
These are supposed to be used at 90 degrees to the log! From the side. I have a big one on my tractor and it will split 2 foot diameter, 4 foot tall logs with ease.
I think this is meant to make kindling. It should have been able to cut through that last one.but you are using regular drills. I wonder if you use a heavy duty drill or definitely a bigger battery if that would have made a difference. I have a 1400 pound impact drill. To take nuts and bolts off of car tires, trucks tires, riding mower blades, and the Milwaukee impact is the strongest one. Maybe you needed a different drill. I’m sure Amazon didn’t give you much direction
@jonboyer4058 i do finally have a corded drill, and I do have another wood drill bit so hopefully I can make a video with it soon and compare. Thabks for the feedback and watching. Happy New Year and be sure to Subscribe!
Ya we normally don't split wood with sandals and shorts on. The younger crowd really doesn't learn too well until it's too late. Safety seems to have gone out the window.

It's all about power. You can't do that with battery drill with 150w of power. You need at least 1500W
This tool works look at a video at someone to show you how to use the tool with splitting wood!
I just bought one of those and the best thing to do is lay it on its side to lock. That is if you go from the top that son of a gun is going to bind up on you. Good way to bust the wrist. My suggestion. Try it on inside to log on inside. Good luck!
Appreciate the tips and feedback!
Just get a wood splitter from Harbor Freight! It actually splits wood 🪵 easily. Thanks for the video!
I bought one years ago to try, and even with my biggest electric core drill, it didnt work very well, especially with bigger rounds.
Thanks for the review. I was wondering if they were a gimmick. Glad to not waste my money
Thank you for showing us what not to buy, please be careful not to hurt yourself, that will brake your wrist!
Thanks for saving my money.
Rename this video: My first day using a power drill.
I figured these things don’t work as well as the ads where they split wood like it’s nothing. Maybe they are using soft woods.
I think smaller pieces, on their side, with a corded drill will get some minor results. But yes, no where near what I think most would hope for.
All the other videos show them drilling from the sides, thru the bark.
Thanks from Sweden!
Very welcome, thanks for watching!
Put the wood on it side. The way you’re doing it is like holding an egg on the outside of it trying to squeeze it and wonder why it won’t break. That’s the strongest part of the wood at the top 🔝
I bought one of those dadgum drill heads and it didn't work for crap
The only way this concept works is with large stationary machines. The best tool for home-owners is one of those electric-hydraulic splitters for about $300
I'll just stick to my 20 pound maul splitter, although being 87 years old, it's getting a little harder.
I thought the drill was supposed to go in the side of the log. It won’t grab properly in end grain.
Drill until stuck, remove drill, smash with sledge hammer until split, repeat.
It's so easy!
The drill was spinning anti clockwise by the looks of the settings on the drill and the kickback direction when it was sticking. Probably wont make a difference to be fair as those tool bits are shocking but it might give it the slightest of chances 😂
Thank you for saving me the trouble of ordering one!
That was the goal, to help avg buyers like myself and you. I was hoping it would work, I had no clue prior to the test. It's unfortunate, but I'm glad I could save you the trouble. Thanks for the feedback. Be sure to subscribe!
Why are you in the high speed setting
These are designed to be used into the side of the log not the end like you are attempting, which is impossible.
Very good call out. I should have tested that angle too.
@@SKLIFEstyle It doesnt work well on the side either. Just get a splitting axe. That does work.
Thanks for your loving response. Do us all a favor and stop filling our air with your hatred.
I noticed in another video these are reverse threaded
good to know
These are supposed to be used at 90 degrees to the log! From the side. I have a big one on my tractor and it will split 2 foot diameter, 4 foot tall logs with ease.
Thank you! You saved me from buying this!
Was the wood dried or green?
More green than seasoned..maybe 6 months old.
Why are you running it in reverse???
Thank you very much. I won't waste my money
Should've used a dewalt. I have no issues with mine splitting logs.
This guy didn't even have on the low setting that's 6 minutes I'll never get back
Ya we normally don't split wood with sandals and shorts on. The younger crowd really doesn't learn too well until it's too late. Safety seems to have gone out the window.
Sandles, battery drill, at what point did he go to hospital 😢
Videos I viewed drill bit was approached from bark side
maybe a 1/4” impact. dewalt makes a powerhouse one.
I will save my money - thanks
