Honestly I fucking loved this video because it shows how normal, and similar to you and I Avicii is. No, he's not some prodigy audio engineer that's going to create his own unique sounds/effects. Yes, almost all his sounds are from loops and presets. I personally couldn't care less. When the track is finished, all I care about is what the final product sounds like. Where you think he might be taking shortcuts, or being lazy; all I care about are the combinations of melody and rhythmic patterns. What he does have is a gifted ear which allows him to layer melody on melody and arrange some pretty excellent songs. The best part about this is that it gives hope for beginners like me. I still want to learn as much theory and technical skills as I can, but it's nice knowing that there's potential success for a guy whose best strength is creating melodies.
Avicii was a pure genius... using fruity loops, a bunch of sample packs, Nexus and stock plugins to create a melodic, memorable and inspiring track... legend.
Lol! That reminds me, I watched an Ultra set of The Chainsmokers...they played a drop that was basically just that same preset...like hmm, that's familiar...
So fascinating. This reminded me of this quote: "The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work." - Michael Jackson I could watch him & listen to him forever. It's tragic and it breaks my heart that Avicii is no longer with us. This world lost such a talented and kind soul.
OCFreak2009 Actually thought of Michael Jackson when I saw this videos. Two groundbreaking geniouses who were reallly missunderstood but also really talented
The best thing about this video is Tim’s honesty about his technical limitations. He’s an artist with true melodic vision, and that’s what makes people love his music-not his ability to create completely new synths, drums, or FX. The music drives the bus, and it’s inspiring for every young producer or musician to see how he works. If you have the musical ability, FL Studio is an incredible way to get started and make things happen quickly. You don’t always need to be a sound production wizard or know every detail about how compressors, EQs, etc., work. It’s important when finishing a song, sure, but it all starts with the music-and that’s what I love about this video.
Well, here is when my love for producing electronic music started, I always end up watching this video when I think about Avicii/Tim and who was him for me, your music helped me when I was down and you gave me something that has made me happy, I never felt such a connection with someone I never knew, rest in peace
+FoleyZ The only way is to keep at it. Day after day. Years from now you will look back to today, and those will be the days your looking and wishing to be able to do , today . Persistence my friend :)
*_Some notes on how he did his songwriting/production:_* *Process* - He begins with a piano melody and chords under it, as they are the focus of the track, only selecting sounds after - He then does the bass and selects a sound - He picks a good punchy kick sample, so that the kick sounds good by itself (he cares about every element of the song sounding good) - After he has a good base down, he begins arrangement *Arrangement* - Intro = 32 bars (Low passed strings begin after 16 bars, with the cutoff slowly increasing and a long riser beginning) - Verse = 24 bars (Low passed strings with the cutoff slowly increasing) - Drop/Chorus = 28 bars (kick starts after 8 bars and ends 4 bars early) - Verse = 32 bars (drum loop only lasts first 16 bars, he adds the intro synth back in for a change until the drop, bass is in for the last 8 bars) - Bridge = 24 bars (adds pluck melody for entire bridge, a buildup starts after 8 bars, drums and bass come back after 8 bars and end after 8 bars) - Drop = 32 bars (weak kick plays for 8 bats before being replaced with a strong kick, drums and bass are gone in the last 8 bars and replaced with the bridge melody one octave higher) - Outro = 32 bars (just a drum loop) - Throughout the entire arrangement, Avicii adds a lot of variation and changes by taking out and adding back in elements in order to keep the entire song interesting and to make the listener feel excited. He builds tension by increasing the low pass filter cutoff, risers, and strategically taking out elements at certain points to increase the focus on certain parts of the track. He releases the tension with impacts and with a smooth and strong transition into a new section of the song. *Production* - He layers many synths to get a thick wide sound - He does all the creative stuff (arrangement, melody, harmony) before making tweaks and doing technical stuff (better sound selection, mixing, effects) - He doesn’t follow a specific technical process or use special techniques, he tweaks things based on whether or not it sounds good to him - His skill lies in his creativity, melody, harmony, arrangement, and figuring out what sounds good. He isn’t a very skilled technician or engineer (not extremely good at mixing and doesn’t do sound design) and he doesn’t want to be, he cares more about how the audience feels listening to his music
Its 2021 and i remember watching this when it came out. What a legend. I love this video, not just because it gives a look inside his process, but because it humanizes it. So many things we struggle with in production, to see someone that was such a genius at his craft go through the same things, and remember he was a human being too. Love it.

WKT He wanted/surely still wants to be called Avicii in the afterlife if there is one. He's happier with that name so let it be. He's several coined names, and prefer them than what his parents made his name was fr birth.
@@marithanordin920 He wants to be called Avicii! So! Respect is when you call him the name he wanted himself called. For example: Lady Gaga, and lots of other people too.

Man...RIP. This video was the one that made me feel like a dream of making music was achievable with what I had in front of me. It was no longer some secret team of savants that spent millions of dollars to make records, but rather a visionary and his set of tools. It is sad that he is gone, but his legacy will continue to inspire budding producers and music-lovers everywhere.
I dont know about making music, but i do love Avicii's music.. Im here not to learn but i always come back here just to hear his voice, like just listening and looking at him while im at work. Its so strange to love and miss someone i didnt even met. When he came to our country (Philippines) i didnt get the chance to go coz i dont have enough money back then and now that i can he is already gone😭😭
I'm not even really into edm but this dude made me appreciate it more and this video helped me a lot when i started making beats in 2014 .. RIP young legend gone way too soon 🙏
Hi Avicii, is mid of 2020 now, I just finished one track, gonna try to mixing and mastering it. Thank you for leading me into the production world in 2012
For everyone complaining about presets, realize he's creating the entire arrangement in a single interview. 1. He's not going to waste our time fiddling with knobs when he's trying to show us how he creates a piece of MUSIC. 2. Honest to god, listeners don't care if you use presets. 3. The true measure of a producer lies in the MUSICAL skills he/she possesses, as in hearing the potential a sound has to illicit an emotional response, and being able to engineer that into a mix for maximum effect. Being able to tweak synth knobs certainly demonstrates your knowledge of the plugins and qualifies you as an effects artist, but mastery of those skills does not make you a good producer.
Saying, that Avicii didn`t do a good job, because he used presets is a bit like saying that an architect didn`t do a good job, because he didn`t burn the bricks for the building himself. A preset is a sound and nothing more. Different Instruments have different sounds. The sound alone is nothing. A piano player is not a bad piano player cause he didn`t build the piano himself. If you want a piano sound you buy a piano and if you want a spinet sound you buy a spinet. There are people creating presets and this is in my opinion not very much different from building an instrument. You have to buy those presets and this is like buying an instrument with the difference, that all instruments can be played with a keyboard.
@@cringer8107 that's how you like to produce. but others prefer to start with a preset, because a random sound can be very inspiring and motivating. The main thing at the end is a result that you are satisfied with. How to achieve this depends on personal workflow and ability. However, there is no reason to tell anyone how to do it. Everyone has their own workflow.
@@Noplan im not saying he didnt have the talent to find exact the stuff that will work and sound good together, thats another thing... he def had the ear for combining different sounds to achieve a track that ''works'' , but imo a big part of producing is sound synthesis or sampling and modulate that sample, only then u will eventually find ''ur'' sound which will be recognised :D ... but i have to say, i rly exaggerated 8 month ago and i kinda sound like an asshole...
Performing on stage didnt kill him. Drinking like a sailor in after parties did. Dont smear the act of spinning records as an evil thing. The people he had around him were assholes who never cared for him.
This legend is the main reason why I made my own EDM music on FL Studio. And I remember watching this many times non-stop when I was 11 and 12 YO so much inspiration by him RIP Avicii❤️🙏💯
people saying electronic music is repetative and yet those 4 green lines(kicks) are keeping people glued to a dancefloor and keep us dancing...Thank you Avicci for every second of your life..I hope u r in peacefull and better place now!
"one of the most talented musicians of all time"....... c´mon bro rly? he was good, he was great, but dont call him "one of the most talented musicians of all time"
Mike T He is still a musician, only difference is that he creates music on a computer instead of, let’s say a piano (which he also can play very well). Saying that he is not a talented musician is a really ignorant thing to say.
Edit: I came back to this video after I received the news. Rest In Peace, Tim. You have made a very important mark in the history of EDM and we will always remember you in our hearts. ❤️ *** Notice how Avicii can't really explain what he want to do, so the guy behind the camera tried to help him. That's not called being unprofessional, music comes from your heart not from your words. Its hard to describe music, the feeling is always different and everyone has their own feeling against a track. That's why if anyone asks me how I put that track together in FL, I just say "I go by my heart and likings."
YES!! It'c so annoying when people hate because an artist can't fully explain a song. Half of any track I make I'm like "well, how did I come up with that?" after I'm done
I'm very happy to see awesome house producers using FL studio :) I'm 21 now and i'm teaching myself FL studio since im 15. I would LOVE to just sit there with one of the "bigger known" guys like avicii and produce a track with him. Wow that would be something like a lifedream.. Edit: 17:57 pfhahaha

This is so fucking true, can’t explain it better than you just did!
I agree! He is very genius in terms he is able to pick which sounds are most suitable for certain arrangements... What a legend!
Whoever recorded this needs a huge respect for uploading this thanks man
I'm so glad this video exists. Would have paid serious money to witness his style of work.
Man this video inspired me to do so much, he was really a great guy. R.I.P Tim... It's a sad day.
Rest in peace Avicii, I had to re-watch this video when i heard the news. You'll always be a huge influence in the musical world.
Avicii was a pure genius... using fruity loops, a bunch of sample packs, Nexus and stock plugins to create a melodic, memorable and inspiring track... legend.
Agreer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Layyyyyyers. He really took layering to the next level to create those crazy impactful soundscapes. Hence one of the reasons he got so big.
Watched I'm Tim on Netflix the other day, and remembered I watched this many years back. Still inspiring to watch Avicii's workflow
😢 I'm Tim was definitely neatly made
Watching this legend making music is pure pleasure. His music will always evoke emotions in me and remind me of good times

Im pretty sure Armin got inspired by watching this haha
NERO - Doomsday
Lol! That reminds me, I watched an Ultra set of The Chainsmokers...they played a drop that was basically just that same preset...like hmm, that's familiar...
He was laughing cause it reminded him of Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" song.
So fascinating. This reminded me of this quote:
"The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work." - Michael Jackson
I could watch him & listen to him forever. It's tragic and it breaks my heart that Avicii is no longer with us. This world lost such a talented and kind soul.
OCFreak2009 Actually thought of Michael Jackson when I saw this videos. Two groundbreaking geniouses who were reallly missunderstood but also really talented
@@RandomGuy-il8ec Let's not go down that road please
Yeah...
@@RandomGuy-il8ec i agree. white ppl always called him crazy and it drove me nuts he was a kind soul never got into ONE crime at all.
@@RandomGuy-il8ec Avicii wasn't misunderstood.
Well, here is when my love for producing electronic music started, I always end up watching this video when I think about Avicii/Tim and who was him for me, your music helped me when I was down and you gave me something that has made me happy, I never felt such a connection with someone I never knew, rest in peace
same, I have watched this video so many times but every time I watch it i learned something new.
r.i.p to the master of melody
They say LEGENDS never die! Atleast now I know he'll never die, never ever die from our HEARTS! 😔😢
He's not dead- I can see him moving in the video- he's definitely alive.

Avicii : Takes 5 mins to write complete lead
Me : After 5 hours , Fuck this shit , I'll write new one tomorrow
+Julez Jaax Hey , Thanks for suggesting him :) I'm actually watching his videos since 3 months :)
Happy Production!~
+Julez Jaax what do you means , "he didn't even write the basic lead himself " mind explaining/?

Yeah :) It's been 4 months, I am starting to write better stuff :)
+FoleyZ The only way is to keep at it. Day after day. Years from now you will look back to today, and those will be the days your looking and wishing to be able to do , today . Persistence my friend :)
*_Some notes on how he did his songwriting/production:_*
*Process*
- He begins with a piano melody and chords under it, as they are the focus of the track, only selecting sounds after
- He then does the bass and selects a sound
- He picks a good punchy kick sample, so that the kick sounds good by itself (he cares about every element of the song sounding good)
- After he has a good base down, he begins arrangement
*Arrangement*
- Intro = 32 bars (Low passed strings begin after 16 bars, with the cutoff slowly increasing and a long riser beginning)
- Verse = 24 bars (Low passed strings with the cutoff slowly increasing)
- Drop/Chorus = 28 bars (kick starts after 8 bars and ends 4 bars early)
- Verse = 32 bars (drum loop only lasts first 16 bars, he adds the intro synth back in for a change until the drop, bass is in for the last 8 bars)
- Bridge = 24 bars (adds pluck melody for entire bridge, a buildup starts after 8 bars, drums and bass come back after 8 bars and end after 8 bars)
- Drop = 32 bars (weak kick plays for 8 bats before being replaced with a strong kick, drums and bass are gone in the last 8 bars and replaced with the bridge melody one octave higher)
- Outro = 32 bars (just a drum loop)
- Throughout the entire arrangement, Avicii adds a lot of variation and changes by taking out and adding back in elements in order to keep the entire song interesting and to make the listener feel excited. He builds tension by increasing the low pass filter cutoff, risers, and strategically taking out elements at certain points to increase the focus on certain parts of the track. He releases the tension with impacts and with a smooth and strong transition into a new section of the song.
*Production*
- He layers many synths to get a thick wide sound
- He does all the creative stuff (arrangement, melody, harmony) before making tweaks and doing technical stuff (better sound selection, mixing, effects)
- He doesn’t follow a specific technical process or use special techniques, he tweaks things based on whether or not it sounds good to him
- His skill lies in his creativity, melody, harmony, arrangement, and figuring out what sounds good. He isn’t a very skilled technician or engineer (not extremely good at mixing and doesn’t do sound design) and he doesn’t want to be, he cares more about how the audience feels listening to his music
Thank you so much for the amazing summary! =)
@@RedRiverChannel You’re welcome! As an aspiring producer myself I just wanted to share some info and help other aspiring producers out :)
Is correct to say that Tim layers the lead melody and also the chord progression in the drop ?
@Simone Pepe layering is key for it to sound full, having main leads & stereo leads so to answer your question, yes he 100% layers on the drop.
Looks like bridge was removed in the published version

What a legend. I love this video, not just because it gives a look inside his process, but because it humanizes it. So many things we struggle with in production, to see someone that was such a genius at his craft go through the same things, and remember he was a human being too. Love it.

This has got to be the MOST awesome video I found on Avicii in the studio 😢😭😢 THANK YOU So much for sharing this. 🙏🏻
You're so right, I totally agree ✌️

This is the best EDM tutorial ever! The amount of work required to create a song is incredible! Hats off for the official song. ❤❤❤
And even if those people had these presets, they wouldn't be able to make a clean song :/
u dont produce i guess.... its lazy, cheap and unoriginal. ur comparison is pathetic....
@@cringer8107 ok making presets is sound engineering dude learn to make the difference.
Look how happy he was. This is where he belonged, not on a stage DJ:ing.
But, but, i like his air piano style.
Yes, just producing
To be honest, all he did was go on stage and press play
Performing on stage didnt kill him. Drinking like a sailor in after parties did. Dont smear the act of spinning records as an evil thing. The people he had around him were assholes who never cared for him.

Notice how Avicii can't really explain what he want to do, so the guy behind the camera tried to help him. That's not called being unprofessional, music comes from your heart not from your words. Its hard to describe music, the feeling is always different and everyone has their own feeling against a track. That's why if anyone asks me how I put that track together in FL, I just say "I go by my heart and likings."
so true
i cant agree anymore👍🏻
Sure dude, but its also because its hard when you gotta translate every single Word in your head
YES!! It'c so annoying when people hate because an artist can't fully explain a song. Half of any track I make I'm like "well, how did I come up with that?" after I'm done
No its called, I scroll through presets to make my music. Like he didn't even tune the preset to make his own patch
