"I'm Straight' by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers in '72 as well. You can obviously argue that it's proto-punk - but the Modern Lovers massive influence on what was to come can't be understated. Jonathan Richman made a purpose to be the anti-hippie and specifically mean "I'm Straight" to mean anti-drug. The "Hippie Johnny" in the song's lyrics is referring to John Felice of the Real Kids (who was the Modern Lovers guitarist at the time)... one of the first American bands referred to as "punk rock". I can't speak for where the Vibrators got their name, but I do know that Stiff Little Fingers took their name from the title of the song from Pure Mania. Pure Mania is a great album! Knox was already 32 years old by '77.
Tried.. that Modern Lovers track.. More so, because of the reference to (proto-punk).. i have a draw to hearing the bands who get this genre tag.. Look i get it.. the , this was way out man!. Nothing was like these guys etc.. Rebellious sound etc.. RAMONES.. I still haven't heard.. Their sound.. In so called.. before the before.. Punk.. Cheers from Orange County California 🇺🇸 Oi Oi Oi..
@@AtZero138 I love the Modern Lovers. "I'm Straight" is a slower one. "Roadrunner" is their most well-known track. Lot of punk bands covered it, Pistols included (on the Great Rock'n'roll Swindle Soundtrack). I'm confused though by part of your post. You never heard the Ramones? Nothing wrong with that, but kind of blows my mind! lol. cheers.
I love that song! Jonathan Richman is one of the greats and I love his take on many things in and around the music he creates. His take on volume is spectacular. It shows how you don't need much volume to get your point across!
Yooooo! I saw the Vibrators back in 2019 at a club in DC. We were working a job in Alexandria, Va. and a few co-workers and I piled in one of the work vans and went. It took us half an hour to find a garage tall enough to fit the van and walked like ten blocks to get there. After the show we discovered that the garage was closed, so we had to Uber back to the hotel. A couple of us had to get up super early to go fetch the van and be back before the boss found out. Made it back just in time to leave for work. That was a hell of a fun night 👊
I’m absolutely 100% NOT straight edge but if you’re not militant about it, I actually totally respect it. Minor Threat was and is and will always be a HUGE influence and inspiration for me. This video was fucking awesome. The Vibrators rule fucking hard too. Cheers!🍺🍻🥃😂😉
Ian got the idea for the black X's from a trip to SF. They went to an all ages show at a venue that sold alcohol and used the big black X to make it easy to spot underage attendees.
@@thepunkrockreview All good, the Vibrators observation is something new that I learned today. I used to have that record but lost it years ago. Cheers!
As a guy who doesn't part take in drinking or smoking or drugs of any kind, I still don't think of myself as "straight edge" I'm still very wild without any need for chemical "enhancement"
Pure Mania is one of the best albums of it's punk era. Stiff Little Fingers took their name from The Vibrators song from that album and The Exploited covered Troops of Tomorrow from The Vibrators V2 and even called their second album the same. Very important band from the late 70s, but after that all they put out was mediocre.

Watch the interview he did with sean muttaqi that was very much a memphis and upstate new York thing, the guy who "invented" hardline doesn't even see himself as it. The hardline stance was on animal rights not straight edge, but the fanzine kids merged the two.

I’ve been on about this for years. Not to mention the gang vocals of “I’m Straight” being further foreshadowing for the scene to come

Yeah i totally forgot to bring that up! I was so shocked by the song existing, I just yapped about that! Lol

@thepunkrockreview me too! What part of the US are you in? I'm on tour across most of it this year and next
That was a fun video. Have had always heard of this band but need to give a good listen. 14 years clean here!!
Heck yeah, 14 years is amazing! Tha is for watching, I love finding out these little interesting tidbits and history lessons

Yeah we're covering that album in a bit more detail on the podcast that drops today
Ian MacKaye's brother Alec's band Ignition covered "Keep It Clean" so it was probably an influence.
Oh word??? That's awesome!
Man i wish i had a chance to have tried quayludes. Just because of the slang term... Disco biscuits lol
If those had been around in the 2000s, we would have done them, for sure... smh, good grief, lol
I opened for the Vibrators in Portland a few years ago .. they're amazing atill

I'm on the same wavelength as you. OG straight edge is inspiring. Militant vegan SxE and hardline, however, not cool.

MT might have given it a name, doesn't mean that the idea wasn't around before.
Dexys midnight runners despite the name had a tee total policy for members, so did the blockheads at one point.
