Watch the 2007 film called Sunshine. It's a masterpiece. This short story is not mentioned in the film's wiki, but I have a hard time believing that the overall premise of Sunshine could have been inspired by anything other than this short story.
It's funny to hear some of the old Sci-fi stories with their misconceptions as to the nature of our solar system.

This story is highly based on “The Nightland” who Both Howard Phillips and Ashton Smith considered a huge inspiration for their own works.

    Couldn't he decide himself?!
First he tells of _Zothique_ , the last continent on Earth, whereas all our science and machinery have "long been forgotten", now he's describing a high-technologized future! Then, he's telling about how Earth people are striving the wastelands of Mars and Venus together with strange native people and animals; _here_ he describes the planets as inhabitable, as they really are, physically.
    What the fuck, dude?!

He did several story cycles; like you said Zothique, the future that reverts humanity to a past state of civilization. Also, the Mars cycle which has stories like Vulthoom, and The Vaults of Yoh Vombis. Poseidonis, that featured Isle of the Torturers, and The Theft of the 39 Girdles. Also, the Averogne cycle with The End of the Story, Mother of Toads, and The Mandrakes amongst others. Then there were a bunch of one-offs some of which were contemporary with his time like Strange Shadows, The Return of the Sorcerer, Genius Loci, Schizoid Creator, and Murder in the Fourth Dimension amongst many more. Still others like the two part City of the Singing Flame and The Uncharted Isle, which don't fit into any cycle. Still I'm forgetting a bunch.

shades of our now necessary and futile geoengineering pedicament, but to mess around with the sun rather than the earth, and heat rather than cool
