CAN I OUT CREATE AI? SUPER MARIO ROBOT PIRANHA PLANT

  • I had this crazy idea, I wanted to see if Ai was more creative than me! I asked a buddy to generate an image in Ai using the same prompts I had in my head for the next creation I was gonna make.
    It was simple:
Mario piloting a robotic Piranha Plant, weathered with robotic legs on a blank background.
My buddy went into Midjourny and made his version as I crafted my creation with just the old human brain and my bare hands.
The end result that Ai generated was nothing close to my vision but you be the judge, do you think my creation is better than Ai?
    Did I out create Ai?
I hope you enjoy this custom scratch build video!
Thanks for visiting DR Toys, and as always...

*Waiting for Nintendo to steal this for the next Mario game* Love this concept! Mario can get a bird's eye view of the landscape piloting this machine. The base cracked me up with all the little nuances from the Mario world. A+ as always, and I am so in awe of your imagination for these builds.

The picture looks cool, but your model is much better, to me, if only because the journey and the work to get there makes the end result feel more solid. I appreciate you taking this challenge as it reminds me of the 1800-1900's when people would pit boxers against weird animals to see who would win. For me, humans will win every time! Great work!

Honestly I like the proportions of the AI version a little better, but that could be due in large part to the constraints of the materials you’re using. In a kitbash build the individual components dictate the final product of the build; the AI version wasn’t limited in the same way.

    • @DRToysCreations

AI is good as a starting point. It's an idea generator. The fact you can't get it to do exactly what you want is kind of the beauty of it. It's where you take it as a human artist that transforms it into something interesting. Support humans, but try and embrace new techniques and technologies.

Hi Dave, one other thing you could use to cover wire is heat-shrink tube that is used in electrical work. I'm sure it can be purchased oin longer lengths. You could use wire coat hanger if you wanted a thicker armature wire and for strength if you don't need to bend the wire much during play.

@@DRToysCreations in regards to AI I have to say as an artist it's kind of scary but it's also a decent tool if used properly. If you look at my channel I do a audio skit series called Where in the fahq is Dolli Dearest. I use multiple altered AI images and photos mashed up to make visual representations of the skit. It takes up to 30+ hours to create on 7 to 10 min skit (including scripts, recording audio, editing voice actors audio and my own audio recordings) If I had to create every background or person other than the main photographed cast...I would be working on a single video for weeks if not a month. I do a new skit almost every week...you do the math 🤪🤣 I am not paid for my work but I genuinely enjoy working on physical art and digital. I made 100% of my costume and all props are made in house using techniques show to me by my favorite band in the world GWAR! Something about physically working on a project just hits harder than doing digital or AI art. It. AI can be a great inspiration or tool but it should not replace the amazing work that we do by hand. It should complement it not overshadow and overtake the passion we feel as artist and fans of art. Keep up the great work and I will keep tuning in

The AI image looks like the kind of render a toy company would use in an ad to sell a toy, when the actual toy would only sort of resemble the image. I think we're dealing with apples & oranges here, so I don't see how there's a contest to be had, just a comparison.

  • @ghettojetracing

Wow. This was a tough call… then reality set in. 😂 I’ve also been messing with some AI image rendering and I’m not going to lie - the rendered images are really cool. That said, a printed image is not a 3D creation. I like both of the versions you present, but favor the creativity of the human mind. The way you repurposed some of those plastic bits was really impressive. For me, the AI is good for generating ideas and rekindling that ‘creative juice’, but there is nothing like getting those parts boxes rallied and throwing the switch on a build. All in all, I like your version because it is more representative of what we do. Thank you for creating this video. Stay Calm and Model On!!

I was impressed by the details the Ai added to its piranah-dinosaur-plant. But it looked like something a person could create if they drew it themselves. And yet, your friend still wasn't able to get the look he wanted.
The Ai is a nice tool. But still not as great as the human.
But it is able to grab a lot more information through millions of sources within seconds and "draw" it up within a few more seconds to get something nice.
But it still isn't as good as us. Just efficient and free.
*That* is what most people like about Ai is the fact they can get something close enough to what they want the art to be, and they get it instantly, and don't have to pay an artists a single thing.
But we are still better. 😊
By the way, a painting technique you may find helpful.
After you mask an area that you do not want any bleed through (in this case, you don't want the red to bleed through onto the white dots), after placing your masking down, spray a matte coat onto the entire model. Let it dry (hit it with a hairdryer to speed it up). Then spray your red paint.
Once the red is dry remove the masking.
The matte coat puts a clear seal around the masking so paint wont get under the edges. As it is clear, any overspray of the matte finish will be "invisible".
Also, as it is not a gloss coat, the matte finish offers a subtle texture for additional pait to adhere to.
Then, since sealed around the masked area, the red can't bleed through, and you get a nice crisp circle (or whatever shape you are masking off).
That is a trick I find very useful in my builds.
Your build was fantastic. I love the extra details you added to the cockpit. The base also looks beautiful. 😎
Be Excellent and Party on. 🤘😎🎸

Rare case of me actually liking the AI render for once but my only issue is that...well our ol' plumber aint piloting as much as just rodeo-riding the plant-mecha (which granted IS very Mario, easily could see this as a boss fight) while yours actually is and that makes it way cooler. Small tip for the pipe bending, i've had that issue as well with hollow tubing and what works well is to "thread" either thinner plastic rod into it or just simply cables and then heat-bending it. If you twist thin wire together, sometimes you can even get a cool texture when it bends over the twisted wires as well if the plastic tubing is thin enough. Super smart use on the Gundam foot btw for the control panel, especially using the panelling to make screens :D

You always put such great deals into your projects, I think that's why they are always going to be that little bit better than the AI things. I like how your version looks more like a mech that you would see in a Mario World Game, and yeah the AI one looks cool and detailed too, but it looks more like Mario riding a wild piranha plant T-Rex high bred. So in the end I think yours is the winner 🏆 in this video because it's more so what you were going for.

Sorry for reposting this, UA-cam removed my original comment because i included a link to an a.i render I did. I guess you can't put links in comments.
Both are equally good in their own way. The thing is with you going against a.i is that a.i had pretty much unlimited resources (in a way) to create it, while you actually worked with what you had. I love your design because it is unique, original, and it shows character by being made out of spare toy parts. Maybe next time if your friend can try to get a.i to make it with spare toy parts as well, otherwise a.i will have this cgi generated image and won't look hand made. Keep up the great work, love your stuff, and maybe do another build you vs a.i. I've used a.i quite a bit and it does take a little finesse to get it how you want it.

Everyone is so up in arms and sensitive about AI that they forget, it still takes a HUMAN to describe to the AI what to create. It cannot create anything without a prompt. A prompt that Humans input. We tell it what we want it to make. And depending on how good we are at describing what we see in out mind, the better the AI result will be. Look, if you told an artist from the 1800s that one day we would drawing without pencil and paper but rather on tablet machines with digital pens. They would call it blasphemy.

From a visual point of view the AI result is more exciting, denser and better - to me.
But one can hardly compare the two things. One is an 2D mashup digital illustration, the other is a 3D mashup real life model. Whereas the AI "can focus on" composition, details, pose, … a model artist has to also take the process of constructing, real life physics (gravity, material behavior, …), painting, available resources, time (!) … into consideration. As long as the AI result is not a fully painted 3D print, the comparison will be off.
My guess is, that you will be able to generate 3D models for your 3D printer via AI within the next year. Could be possible already, I am not up to date. You would only have to do the painting, following the AI rendering, because the is no painting machine - yet (or is there?).
BUT THE POINT IS, that this is only relevant for professionals. They will definitely use AI to create models, miniatures, props, toys, …, because for them the finished object is the goal.
For the hobbyist it's all about the process. It is about relaxation, enjoying your time, creating, excitement, community, problem solving, and 1000 things more and earning the finished model as a reward.
It was definitely a good idea for a video, for it offers a big opportunity for your community the engage.
    Keep it up!
