That has to be one of the most unique suspension designs in Tamiya history. When you showed a close up of the rear suspension, I wondered who thought that would be a good design when driving the car. It looks neat and functions like it supposed to. But, as you said it difficult to drive. You did a great job on the build. Thanks for sharing.

This thing is like a tank. lol Have you thought of adding a little weight up front to help with steering?? Well THERE is defintely something we agree on. A good rear end? sells me as well!! 😅😂
LOL!! Right!?!?! It is a cool buggy and a little weight may help but I think the solution is the ball diff they sell for it. It would keep the rear from pushing the already limited front steering around and allow it to pivot instead of pushing or rolling as it does now. They have them in stock again so I may go ahead and pick one up. It would be interesting to see a before and after of how it affects it!
Thank you! I really like this buggy for it's scale looks and that great machined rear suspension! Lots of engineering and tinkering went on to get all that working as good as it does!

I had my heart set to order the scorcher but David did a few videos on his Fighting Buggy and the slow motion shots of the rear suspension doing its thing changed my mind! I only run this one in the grass where it it tumbles (and it will) it won't get mangled! On the track it would easily get scarred up so I avoid that! I it a beautiful classic and I really enjoy looking at it but enjoy watching that rear suspension working!
Awesome, that was really interesting - I've never seen under the shell of one and didn't realise about the differences. My first RC was a Rough Rider and your comments about the handling of this one are very familiar... 🤣 I never liked the transparent box or the big bent paperclip of a steering linkage in the RR, so it's nice to see the design here. And yeah, that rear suspension looks awesome (and like it works waaaay better than the torsion bar version... 🤣). It's a very cool car and you've got it looking great. 👍
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it! I ordered the ball diff from Tamiya the other day so I hope to get that put in sometime soon and see how much of a difference it will make. They do seem to do much better on loose surfaces, I saw Shen RC driving his around on a sandy ball field and it was doing very good!! Once it gets in the grass and has grip it becomes a bulldozer though! If you have not seen his video you should go check it out, it just came out today or last night, he has some god running footage in there!!
It is a really cool buggy. I need to tear it down and add in the diff to help it out. It drives great straight but takes a country mile to turn if you are on the throttle at all! LOL!
@AddamsPlayground im so tempted to get this buggy. Bro passed away in 2016. He also had an RC10 back in the 80s. I just finished the Jay Halsey kit for Xmas.
Thank you Fred, it is a really cool buggy! I just got the ball diff in for this so I may be tearing it apart soon and installing that to see what it does for the driving.
Its called a fighting buggy originally from Japan, the “super champ” was specific for north America because back then north americans werent very accepting how the rest of the world named things.
Addam, love the buggy but way too rich for me. Yes, love Dave's video on the buggy, I to love watching the rear end (I fell down some steps doing that). Awesome video man, Happy Holidays to You & the Family!!!
Yeah it is not a budget kit at all but all the perfectly machined parts in there do justify the higher price. Everything fit perfectly and worked perfectly. That rear suspension is just too cool and I love watching it all work so well! I have tripped going up the stairs looking at a rear end before... LOL.. Happy Holidays to you and yours as well!!!
Nice video Adam. I've been on a vintage kick lately and I do have one of these NIB to build. Picked up a set of aluminum wheels for it to. A design just as old as we are lol. But I love these older chassis with all the aluminum components
Yeah, we have become vintage... the good thing is vintage is highly sought after so it's nice to be wanted!! LOL!! I ordered the ball diff from Tamiya for it today and will do a head to head of the current setup and then with the ball diff installed. I am sure it will make a pretty difference. They were not in stock when I got the kit so I built it stock.
Haha cool and true t-shirt👍 Did you say put the Sand Scorcher on the back burner?? How dare you!! You must add one soon Addam! A must have, l adore mine and bonus is its the Mk1 version and definitely the jewel in my little collection! But must agree with you Addam the rear suspension on the Champ/ Fighting buggy set up is definitely very fascinating and a big draw! Same way as the rear suspension on the Hotshot has me fascinating even after all these years! I really must get a Super Champ one day or a rere its a Super cool looking buggy in my opinion and l love the camber lol. There is always a debate about if its a true SRB or not but in my view its the next generation SRB version haha! Great vid buddy.
Yeah I could not pass up on getting the shirt, especially with the state of the workshop right now! It is a disaster zone everywhere but the camera view!! I know the sand scorcher is a special one and It is still on the list to get. I will get one but with all the deals I have gotten lately it will be sometime next year! I am getting the ball diff for the FB to see how much of a difference it will make in the turning and handling of the the buggy so once I get that and get it installed I will do a comparison video of that. I am thinking about the SS being the beach build this year. I will have to get the body painted before going down there as painting at a very breezy beach house rental is not easy!!
@@AddamsPlayground haha it always looks so organised and tidy from our point of view watching 😄 and yeah l think a ball diff will transform its performance in a limited old school buggy designed way but definitely help cornering ability! I have the same problem as you mate my want list just keeps growing it scary! Iol Yeah and painting near any sand sounds a recipe for a bad nightmare too definitely avoid that! All the best Addam cheers James.
The super champ was the first Good RC I wanted when I was a kid I thought it was so cool looking straight out of the Baja 1000 books I used to take out of the library . I never ended up getting one as a matter of fact it was a few years before I got a good RC which ended up being the Blackfoot 💪 once they re-released it I was like cool I'm going to get one but even then it was a few years before I did because it's pretty expensive for what it is. Anywho last year my wife made me buy one for my birthday and I built it and I love it I still haven't ran it but I love it it's such a cool looking and unique tank of a rc I ended up buying MCI super champ decals for it to have the old livery. And I don't call it the fighting buggy or the super champ I call it the super fighting buggy champ 😉
Awesome, your wife sounds like a keeper!!! That would have been and good compromise of the name but would have been a nightmare to get on the box art!!! I think getting the Blackfoot was a better choice and I am sure you had a ton of fun with it!! I know I drove the wheel off my Super Blackfoot when I had it, that poor thing went through hell and back but it never quit!
@@AddamsPlayground funny thing is my birthday was Friday the 16th I told her a few weeks ago I wanted a losi 22 5.0 because I want to maybe start racing even though I have no talent for such an activity 😆 So she told me to buy it for my birthday, So I did. And then she ended up buying me a brand new frog kit because she knew I wanted one now I have four kits here to build plus she has another one to build and my son has to wrap one up 😜
@@pbruteforce1 I think I saw your pics of the frog on the Tamiya legends FB page!! That was super cool! I always wanted to try racing but I am not competitive at all and be a ball of anxiety hoping I don't wreck anyone out there. I'll stick to wrecking myself out here on my track and not ruin anyone else's day! I know it is addicting and everyone I have talked to that races said they loved it but I'm a chicken about stuff like that, ain't gonna lie!!
My cousin owned a Super Champ back in 1983. I thought the Fighting Buggy looked like it. I also wish they had kept the Super Champ name. The thing is a tank with all of that metal. So this is a locked diff or aka "straight shaft" as my cousin used to call it. I recall it didn't handle well at all and it weighed a ton LOL I like the oil bottle connected to the shock in the rear. I don't recall that being on the Super Champ. Is that exclusive to the Fighting Buggy? Is that oil bottle functional? Does it keep the oil level full? Thanks for bringing back some fun memories!
The Super Champ and the Fighting Buggy are the same. It was named the RC Fighting Buggy in Japan when released originally but the name was changed for the US market (maybe others as well) to the Super Champ for better marketing. It does have the locked diff and he was not wrong, it is a solid brass gear with a straight shaft going through it! It is is pretty beefy with all the metal in it and it is not going to clear any big jump well or turn super well but it is fun to drive and like no other I have. The oil bottle is functional as a pressure tank and oil reservoir. It allows for that big shock to fully compress without blowing the seals out when the rear end slams down. There is a lot of fluid movement from full release to full compression in the shock and without that bottle it would not work well at all! Glad you enjoyed it and it brought back some fun memories for ya!
Definitely a different one. I have an original and there is just nothing like it. I believe they changed the chassis it an attempt to fit the body as well as it being the last version fit different more modern at the time electrics. I believe the Super Champ was a real race car and that was why they had to change the name. They couldn't renew the licensing.
Ahhhh, that makes sense and why they changed the name. I didn't really see much online about the history, just forum posts about lookin for parts and pics of finished restored buggies! I do adore the looks of this one and that rear suspension I am in love with! I really appreciate the engineering and machining done to make all that work as well as it does! Thanks for the info!!
I am not going to tell people to buy something I don't know how well it will work or not. If I had put on in and it made a difference then I would make that suggestion.
Did you see that video I sent you from Exo caged and I can't wait for you to paint mine how is everything else going that I'm waiting for also I hope you look up that stinger from Jegs I can't believe you wouldn't want to buy one for that price with all the little nice and easy it comes with.
I always wanted a Super Champ (Fighting Buggy), but at the time, I could afford a Super Champ or a Blazing Blazer but not both. I chose the Blazing Blazer (for better or for worse). I am curious as to how this chassis would work with a differential.
I would have totally done the same thing! Bother are really cool but I would have gone with the blazing blazer too! They do make a ball diff for this, I have not gotten it yet but should! It is part number 54897. It is not a bad price at all and I should go ahead and get and try it out and do a before and after video! Maybe that could happen..... Take care bud!
Bro these fighting buggies are so bad A$$.!! I just got done watching one rip on ShenRCs channel.!! I love how it doesn't have a traditional wing setup. Cool rig my bro.!!
It is a great looking buggy and his did really well out in the dirt. It worked a lot better out there than mine in the grass! I bought the ball diff for it so once that gets here I will get it in and see how well it does!!

That is such a cool car..
Looks great 👍
It really is one of the greater looking classics from Tamiya! Everything about it looks good!!
Another great Tamiya
It is a great looking classic!! I can watch that rear suspension work all day!!
The original had black hex hardware. My brother had the original when we were kids
@notbuyingit8047 sorry to hear that but it would be a cool tribute build in his honor. The Halsey RC10 kit is a great looking buggy too!
Cool video I really enjoy it thanks addam
Thank you Fred, it is a really cool buggy! I just got the ball diff in for this so I may be tearing it apart soon and installing that to see what it does for the driving.
Love it..
It is a great looking buggy!
Its called a fighting buggy originally from Japan, the “super champ” was specific for north America because back then north americans werent very accepting how the rest of the world named things.
Interesting.. odd how things like that happened! It could be named the slow unicorn and I would still adore it!
@@AddamsPlayground Seems like we have something in common with steps/stairs, I'll leave at that.
Cool buggy and great information
Thanks Duke! Appreciate you checking it out and have a great Sunday brother!
@@AddamsPlayground thanks and you to brother
Nice video Adam. I've been on a vintage kick lately and I do have one of these NIB to build. Picked up a set of aluminum wheels for it to. A design just as old as we are lol. But I love these older chassis with all the aluminum components
Yeah, we have become vintage... the good thing is vintage is highly sought after so it's nice to be wanted!! LOL!! I ordered the ball diff from Tamiya for it today and will do a head to head of the current setup and then with the ball diff installed. I am sure it will make a pretty difference. They were not in stock when I got the kit so I built it stock.
@@AddamsPlayground like the way you explained vintage in your question video lol! Hey if Dad bods and being vintage are in then I'm doing OK lol!!!!!
Haha cool and true t-shirt👍
Did you say put the Sand Scorcher on the back burner??
@@AddamsPlayground haha it always looks so organised and tidy from our point of view watching 😄
and yeah l think a ball diff will transform its performance in a limited old school buggy designed way but definitely help cornering ability!
I have the same problem as you mate my want list just keeps growing it scary! Iol
Yeah and painting near any sand sounds a recipe for a bad nightmare too definitely avoid that!
Actually the rough riders also quite scale.
You should tell people to get a ball diff for it aftermarket that they make for it or someone else does and it'll turn better.
I am not going to tell people to buy something I don't know how well it will work or not. If I had put on in and it made a difference then I would make that suggestion.
@@AddamsPlayground you could have said it's not a suggestion it's just tell them that it's out there.
Did you see that video I sent you from Exo caged and I can't wait for you to paint mine how is everything else going that I'm waiting for also I hope you look up that stinger from Jegs I can't believe you wouldn't want to buy one for that price with all the little nice and easy it comes with.
I saw the video this morning. it is a decent looking little buggy.
@@AddamsPlayground seems to form quite well too and durable.
Actually the SRB sand scorchers quite scale.
It is
Bro these fighting buggies are so bad A$$.!! I just got done watching one rip on ShenRCs channel.!! I love how it doesn't have a traditional wing setup. Cool rig my bro.!!
It is a great looking buggy and his did really well out in the dirt. It worked a lot better out there than mine in the grass! I bought the ball diff for it so once that gets here I will get it in and see how well it does!!
hello Adam
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out!
You know you can buy a 3800 battery pack that fits a 14th scale car that fits that battery holder that came with that car.
Yeah, any small 2s should fit but I run almost all the Tamiya on NIMH packs since it is fairly close to the old school feel.
@@AddamsPlayground names are too slow man the only car I run is my Red cat I think I do have something to exchange it into a 2s if I want to but I'm not ready to do that because that thing is so top heavy The ground pounder.
@@bradkalman2353 your go fast and things go wrong, mine go normal speed or a little faster than stock and I rarely ever have anything go wrong... I'll stick with the slower speeds and old school feel and you can wear your stuff out all you want
Despite its flaws it does have a cool look and if everything was a performer everything would be the same ( a classic Tamiya all the same mate, nice addition
I may get the ball diff they make for this and see how much that improves the diving of it. I assume it will help out a ton with the understeer issues as it does drive like a bulldozer on power! It is a gorgeous classic buggy for sure and I adore looking at it and watching that rear suspension work!
@@AddamsPlayground or just leave it as is mate, makes it a unique driving experience )
Hey man quick question, just want to confirm it's you i'm corresponding with on text? Thanks
If you got a yt reply saying I have something for you it was not me. Report the message if it is still there and do not give them any info!!
