I feel like this has been my best Ramadan and many of my friends too bc our homes have become our masajid instead of depressing lifeless spaces. No mad dash to the masjid, struggling for parking, dealing with sisters who want to turn all the lights off and pray in the dark and should I go on, lol. I must be an isolationist by my genetic code, but some of us find great solace in isolation.

Last year it was my question he answered first (the one about translations) - I was too busy fangirling and screaming and had to listen to the answer when the stream was uploaded. Lots of love for SHY, Jazakallah Khairan, thanks to Zaytuna for this.
At about minute 28:30, a question was posed. _How can non Arab speakers approach learning the language to understand the Quran; what can we do before mastering Arabic to understand the Quran_ Hamza replied by saying that he will defer the issue related to Arabic (language). But he then mentioned a long winded "explanation" that to understand the Arabic of Quran takes many years; subtle book, multiple possibilities, really long time and a lot of work. He said he got an insight some time ago and was stopped from doing such thing. Then he said abt the habit ie tilawah of Quran, like an exercise (but tilawah is just reciting, it is not learning the Message). He claimed many times what he thought he read was right - was different from what tafseer (previous people) have quoted. He then claimed that Quran can only be understood with tafseer (this means it cant stand on its own to an extent). He said commentary is needed - and Allah made it *ABSOLUTELY* (?) necessary that it has a transmission ie ISNAD... chains .. for the commentaries somewhat. The idea that the Message in the Quran can only be understood by what others said, is somewhat perplexing and could be troubling. It could mean what others said is the Quran...and if that is the case, the actual text will be ignored.. and that can be a misleading practice. *We can* learn Quran by gleaning through various perspectives, but to portray that commentary is absolutely necessary ("is what Quran is")-- that to me, can be dangerous That is why we have all these "freedom fighters" who went to join ISIS. They listened to those "Imam-like leaders" , because such ppl were advised not to "interpret" the Quran, and only take others ie the "religious experts" on what Quran/Islam is/are If commentary (chains) is absolutely important for the Message in the Quran, there are many *new things* discovered in the Quran no commentators of the old would understand. You cant track a commentator (chains) knowing anything about expansion of the Universe, or female bees are the worker bees; etc many new facts uncovered recently. No such thing. That is why there is one verse in the Quran, explicitly mentioning 75v19 Then lo! upon Us the explanation thereof. I think what the original questioner asked was that, can we actually get anything from the Quran -- because the original message is in Arabic.. if we need to learn the language first to get the Message? The answer SHOULD be yes, ppl should be encouraged to read Quran ..as a personal effort to get close to God..and there are many translations available online nowadays. We can PERSONALLY try to understand the Arabic words / sentences using dictionary; there is nothing wrong with that. If we want to be personal with God, we should always do that sort of PERSONAL EFFORT/activity daily, compared to just do tilawah, which is only a recitation activity. If we sincerely read and try to ponder on the meaning, God says He will, and can personally explain it to us (75v19) HOWEVER, if a person wanted to write a book and make formal commentaries to explain a verse/chapter, then the person must learn Arabic and etc commentaries for such "formal" activity. That is where a Muslims should be extra cautious. I think it is tragic / dangerous if etc imams / mullah / Sheikh made a claim that rhyme with "ordinary Muslims cant read Quran and understand the message" ..THAT is what made some gullible Muslims kill themselves i.e. they left the Quran (forsaken, 25v30), and they followed some strange religious leaders, who then exploited the gullible Muslims for etc extremist agenda.
ماشا اللہ بارك الله Agree with u brother. But we also need a teacher too. Sahaba Learn from Prophet Muhammed ﷺ. N then tabeen... N so on... So we also need a teacher a shykh.

At about minute 28:30, a question was posed.
_How can non Arab speakers approach learning the language to understand
the Quran; what can we do before mastering Arabic to understand the Quran_
Hamza replied by saying that he will defer the issue related to Arabic (language). But he then mentioned a long winded "explanation" that to understand the Arabic of Quran takes many years; subtle book, multiple possibilities, really long time and a lot of work. He said he got an insight some time ago and was stopped from doing such thing. Then he said abt the habit ie tilawah of Quran, like an exercise (but tilawah is just reciting, it is not learning the Message). He claimed many times what he thought he read was right - was different from what tafseer (previous people) have quoted. He then claimed that Quran can only be understood with tafseer (this means it cant stand on its own to an extent).
He said commentary is needed - and Allah made it *ABSOLUTELY* (?) necessary that it has a transmission ie ISNAD... chains .. for the commentaries somewhat.
The idea that the Message in the Quran can only be understood by what others said, is somewhat perplexing and could be troubling. It could mean what others said is the Quran...and if that is the case, the actual text will be ignored.. and that can be a misleading practice.
*We can* learn Quran by gleaning through various perspectives, but to portray that commentary is absolutely necessary ("is what Quran is")-- that to me, can be dangerous
That is why we have all these "freedom fighters" who went to join ISIS. They listened to those "Imam-like leaders" , because such ppl were advised not to "interpret" the Quran, and only take others ie the "religious experts" on what Quran/Islam is/are
If commentary (chains) is absolutely important for the Message in the Quran, there are many *new things* discovered in the Quran no commentators of the old would understand.
You cant track a commentator (chains) knowing anything about expansion of the Universe, or female bees are the worker bees; etc many new facts uncovered recently. No such thing.
That is why there is one verse in the Quran, explicitly mentioning 75v19 Then lo! upon Us the explanation thereof.
I think what the original questioner asked was that, can we actually get anything from the Quran -- because the original message is in Arabic.. if we need to learn the language first to get the Message? The answer SHOULD be yes, ppl should be encouraged to read Quran ..as a personal effort to get close to God..and there are many translations available online nowadays. We can PERSONALLY try to understand the Arabic words / sentences using dictionary; there is nothing wrong with that. If we want to be personal with God, we should always do that sort of PERSONAL EFFORT/activity daily, compared to just do tilawah, which is only a recitation activity. If we sincerely read and try to ponder on the meaning, God says He will, and can personally explain it to us (75v19)
HOWEVER, if a person wanted to write a book and make formal commentaries to explain a verse/chapter, then the person must learn Arabic and etc commentaries for such "formal" activity. That is where a Muslims should be extra cautious.
I think it is tragic / dangerous if etc imams / mullah / Sheikh made a claim that rhyme with "ordinary Muslims cant read Quran and understand the message" ..THAT is what made some gullible Muslims kill themselves i.e. they left the Quran (forsaken, 25v30), and they followed some strange religious leaders, who then exploited the gullible Muslims for etc extremist agenda.

Agree with u brother. But we also need a teacher too. Sahaba Learn from Prophet Muhammed ﷺ. N then tabeen... N so on... So we also need a teacher a shykh.
I am really happy that we have Hamzah Yusuf and Abdal Hakim Murad. In Indonesia we have Prof Quraish Shihab who is a mufasir.
I feel so bad i didnt find sh Hamza earlier😭 , but nevertheless one cannot stop listening to him 🤩
