Huge fan of Dan. I don't know why but I f***ing love your music 🤞🏿 I'm not even sure what genre it falls under but the knowledge you're always sharing on this channel is nothing short of priceless. There's no channel out there like yours. 👌🏾
Thank you going the extra mile and doing another example to demonstrate this technique. I didn't mind the previous track anyway, but i quite like this mixolydian composition. Nice work Dan. Another great video.
Hi Dan, thanks for the Video and this useful trick. I had a mixing project laying around with a electric guitar which didn't fit in the mix and sounded more like noise. Perfect usecase for a comb filter. While adjusting the delay, I was initially anoyed by reaper for the 10ms step size for the slider, but then I rembered that this is a JS-Plugin and i can fix this myself. So I reprogrammed the delay slider for the range of 0-15ms and set the step size to 0.1ms. What a great DAW.
Hey Dan, thanks for the follow up. After getting the "lead in" to which parts were separated here and where that to listen, I went back to the previous video and was able to better hear it there as well.
Dan Worrall! You are truly knowledgable, humble, and the ONLY freaking soundguy i can stand listening too for more than 2 minutes at the time. Thank you !
I think is fair to say that not only Dan's tutorials are just a brilliant fountain of engineering knowledge, but the music he uses is just very well composed and arranged for each tutorial. Please don't let some of the comments bring your creativity down... And thanks for sharing your knowledge
This is much clearer to grasp. The comment you made in the middle sums up the issues really well. Using sounds most people are familiar with like piano/guitar is much easier to hear you "overcook" it so we grasp the effect. That's why I use a guitar to explain how moving filters in an EQ create phase shift similar to a flange/phaser to guitarists. As much as I love abstract digital sound design, without a frame of reference towards the "correct" sound we can't distinguish the new sound. Glad you redid this one! Keep them wonky annoying tunes coming!
Don’t dumb down the music too much, Dan.. I look forward to it as much as I look forward to the technical side of your terrific videos. Each is an in-depth mini-course.
big thanks mr Dan for the amasing tutorials you are providing for us! if i can imagine to learn all that you're sharing, so greatfully, then i will be so happy, but it is a mountain of knowledge and it will take years and a lot of brain. but i think that is worth the effort!!! 100%! so thank you for the opportunity! you're great!!!
The effect was dialed in to near perfectipn in the first video.... Boom, more dimension and space and they played really well together. Perhaps people were listening for color changes ...EQ differences.... Rather than listening for dimension or sitting better together in the mix. A lot of time people are looking for that. That's why compression is tricky to learn at first. I still think maybe a lot of people were listening on phone and laptop speakers
Thank you for taking the time to elaborate on this topic. I really liked the first video and had no problem with the music, but it's always useful to hear the processing applied to different instruments! Love your videos and your attitude :)
Someone pointed me to your channel and now all those other audio engineer youtubers sound like they have no clue what they are talking about. Thanks for the great content Dan keep it up!
Thank you Dan! This is a nice and useful tool to have in my toolbox. I really appreciate your videos! I use almost the same trick to make mono sounds stereo for years. Duplicate the sound give it a couple of milliseconds delay and flip the polarity of only the left or right channel. Basically making a side/diverse channel which creates 2 opposite comb filtering effects when mixed with the mid/sum/origanal track. This makes it super stereo. And the best part is your just left with the original signal while listening in mono.
The quality of content here is so much better than pretty much anything else I've seen in the youtube mixing space. Pretty much every home studio "Guru" i've seen (even guys selling courses that are promising radio ready mixes or full-time income from mixing) are saying LCR panning, for example, is the best way to mix, without even mentioning the issues with what it does to the mono mix, or that lovely trick you showed in a previous video for making the sense of depth more interesting. Guys will say "you don't need tips and tricks" but man, your tips and tricks are seriously huge and solve some of the biggest problems of mixing.
That is indeed overly clear, the first mono part I heard on my phone and it was clear as daylight. The rest on the TV, so stereo, tv gas bad sound but still really obvious. Thank you! And I loved the wonky part, very much.
Your tutorials are great as always, however it would be good if you could give a more examples where each trick could be best applied, and where it should not be used such as vocals in this case. As a newbie that would be much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Don´t get angry at envy wannabes... I really appreciate your Input even after doing sound for nearly 25 years. Also I wanted to say that I really like your music although its not my cup of tea but you obviously cant discuss about different tastes in music.
Love the tutorials, love the music... always. And I think the effect of the trick was as clear in the last video as it is in this one. Probably a statement about some people's poor monitoring systems that they couldn't hear it properly... Anyway, thanks for everything, Dan.
I certainly would not say any of your music sucks! I like all of it, just found the dancing synths hard to focus on The change of sound, the synth sound itself was great!. Glad to be included 😀. Thanks for the new video. 👍
I have added UA-cam to the bedroom TV specifically so I can listen to "Dan Worrall" videos instead of night time cocoa. This "Super Separator" trick feels almost like a cheat. I have always had an issue with mixing instruments in similar registers to each other (ESPECIALLY vocals and guitars), and now hearing this, I feel like this is just the ultimate buff I need. I never thought to use combs to literally separate in the full-band sense.
Dan I think your "example" music is very interesting and it's interesting on its own, but all the extra ear candy stuff you do just pushes it over the edge. you should definitely release it! And thanks for the great content once again.

Oh interesting! Currently Listening on AirPodsPros (with UA-cam stuck on lowish quality right now 🙄) and One result of all that lossy compression - some *very* significant frequency masking! Rendering the separation effect essentially *completely* obfuscated (Albeit the midrange gets wonked) Regardless, Loved this technique (and the tune) in the last video - especially for these type of ‘plugged in’ sources. Thanks! As always✌🏼
I would like to hear a 'true' equal volume comparison. Even .5db overall raise to any part would change the mix / masking anyway. maybe measure the difference in isolation, then mix 2 down with the dry compensated by that amount in 1 so you can A/B properly.
People couldn’t hear a difference in his last example. You really think people will hear a difference of 0.05db? He’s done two videos on this now. You know you’re allowed to do that test yourself right?
I think it's BS that anyone would complain about not being able to hear with your original examples. YOU ARE MIXING!!! It is NOT your choice if the music is good or bad. What your JOB IS (as a mixing engineer) is to LISTEN. If anyone couldn't hear it well enough last time, then you are in the WRONG industry. Subtlety requires practice and patience. I am 100% on your side Mr. Worrall!!!
I was one of the commentators claiming to not hear the difference because the music was too confusing (still great music!), but it seems I was wrong. I also couldn't hear it this time. I heard an increase in volume, especially in the guitar track, but that's it. When you set it up, so there was no volume change, I couldn't hear any difference. I tried with 3 different headphones and speakers, but I simply don't get it. I will still try to use this concept on my own music, that way I can focus more on what to listen to while I dial it in myself. Then I will comeback to this video and maybe get it. You seem to be very hyped by this effect and I really want to understand why that is :D
I use your technique using Tokyo Dawn's Slick EQ and it's secret button in SUM on two tracks... actually one track duplicated, with pretty hard stereo separation and one side nudged 10ms left and on 10ms right. It gives a pretty wide stereo field that seems to sway around with frequency [I think]. I'm going to try that with this newer method. Thanks for these vids.
