Sublime. Magistral. Fascinante. Nocturnidad sonora delicadamente relajante. Sutil y con infinitos matices técnicos Mister Larry. Pura ensoñación auditiva a cargo del ex guitarrista de The Crusaders.
The song, Sleepwalk, has become a standard of guitarists. Just like The Swan by Saint-Sens has become a classical standard of cellists. Every guitarist brings to the song their sensibilities, technique, interpretation, and nuance. That song is like a perfect reflection of the guitarist performing it. One of my fav interpretations is by Brian Setzer and his big band. I think Larry Carlton has the best opening two notes I have heard. His fat sound and imitation of a slide guitar are great. I played this song since about 1960, which means that I've been playing it about 60 years. I almost have it just right! lol Maybe after another 60 years, my version will be the definitive one. For me, the difficult part is to keep its'peaceful, other-worldy' tone and yet still be exciting to an audience. My fav songs to play are Sleepwalk and Walk, Don't Run.
I agree with you! I'm a super-fan of Larry ~Carl-Tone~ !!!! I've been working on his technique for 40 plus years, an I have to keep on polishing my lines!!! LOL!!! getting old doesn't help either I'll be 68 in February, and slowly everything gets worn out!!! Lol!!! I really spent a lot of time working on Larry's string bending, sliding in and out of target notes, pre-bending strings, an of course vibrato!!! When I play at nightclubs people always approach me and say things like, "You play with such nice feeling/warmth". One time a young lady approached me right after we finished playing and she said, "Man.... you grabbed my ass~!~" And I was startled and said, "Hey I've never seen you before"! She replied, "No,, I mean,, your playing grabbed me! You gave me the goosebumps"!!! I said, "Thank you very much,, that's a real complement"! And after she walked away, I said a big ~YES~ to myself! Because that's what Larry's playing has been doing to me for 40 years!!!! God Bless!!!! Sonny Cannon.
I've been playing sleepwalk since I first heard it. Great thing about that song every time you play it you can play it just a little bit differently. If my step brother was alive today he'd be 11 years older than me. Grew up with doo wop. When La Bamba is on TV. Still can't watch the last 5 minutes...
Loved it when I was 18 and looking for inspiration. Almost a half century later it hasn't changed. I heard Bobby Messano covering it on 1.FM a few minutes ago and did a "Wait-a-minute . . ." Mr. 335 finesses it now as he did then. A real class act, thanks.
I studied and transcribed Strikes Twice,Sleepwalk,Friends,Mr 335 Live in Japan.I became a studio guitarist because of Larry C and Steve L....I wanted to be like them....a guy someone calls to play on their records.....that profession has somewhat changed into something else, but at least I still play in the studio every day(but now in my own)
I do solo guitar (as my gig), and I grew up listening to this song on the radio on all night beside my bed when it was a new hit. Tells how old I am! ;). I now do it (with my own loop backup track). Always gets the audience's attention and they quiet down and listen. In it's simplicity, it is one of the prettiest and most moving songs ever. I love it and I love Larry Carlton's playing. (I met him once briefly outside the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville. Really nice guy.)
Great taste in your post Hellmuutz... And I truly shared many of them.. I've noticed some of your lives sessions were taken in 'Verviers' Belgium... Are from there? I am a Liegeois who has home in NYC
Brian Setzer is certainly under rated due to the Stray Cat persona, but not even in the same universe as LC. Either educate yourself or go back to sleep.
gtr4u2 Complete nonsense. Setzer won a Grammy for his version. Setzer is a master of all American genres. He even has a classical album which also is great. You are clearly in need of education.
Yes, of course. Go and check out Danny Gatton's version - Setzer is great, but Danny is on another level altogether - and I'm sure Setzer would be the first to say so. Gatton and Carlton are the men for my money - and I LOVE Setzer! Here you go - ua-cam.com/video/cmgAjkxq4Gc/v-deo.html
the tuning of notes was changed back in 1936 from 432 hz to 440 hz that is not a pure note then was the made the standard back in 1955 . get a life and just enjoy the music and let your ego free
Satriani's cover is a great interpretation & simply the best..in my opinion. Carlton & his group seemed to be un-prepared & un-rehearsed which is shocking for pros??
Keyboard player plays a wrong note at 0.11 and larrys first note bend falls short of the note it should be, Really this should be happening with guys at this level, And I thought it was a lame cover anyway, IMHO.
The keyboard player may have hit a quick clam at 0:11 and Larry may have bent his first note not quite up to pitch, but the band is still great and Larry is a master of his craft. Perfection does not always happen in live performance but musicians are dare devils and they take chances.
Just a passing note... he did the same note farther in... its a like 3rd below the chord, still sounds like part of the scale..just not a scale i would have used-- or if i was sitting in on bass in this particular track , it would have caused me to pause, and ask the keyboard player.. "Hey that one note... Is that really got to be there?"
What a beautiful and beautifully played composition by the great LC.
Sublime. Magistral. Fascinante. Nocturnidad sonora delicadamente relajante. Sutil y con infinitos matices técnicos Mister Larry. Pura ensoñación auditiva a cargo del ex guitarrista de The Crusaders.
There are so many ways to play this song. Godamnn it. I must learn them all!
+Shane Labowitz You dont have to - Larry did it!!!
Once again, this tune has found just the right one to 'share it' musically....enjoying so much.
Beautiful, wonderful music. What a joy!
Just saw Larry in Cincy three days ago. So glad I did. Thank You Sir. To people who don't believe in love..watch Larry play his Gibson:)
A nice bluesy version of this song 🎸🎵 Excellent tone and control...I love it.💞

Larry Carlton is bada**! Period. (Had the good fortune of seeing him in concert a few times.) Blessings
This was really good and ive heard many remakes but in the end i always go back to the original . Santo and Johnny made many beautiful songs
When I don't go back to the original, I go to Jeff Beck performing this live, a true tribute!
Beautiful sounds....makes me feel good all over...thanks for the memories Larry..

RITCHEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeee!!!
Just wonderful.
ME AND LARRY ARE OLD DRINKING BUDDIES. HE'S ONE OF THE NICEST, DOWN TO EARTH GUYS YOU'D EVER WANT TO MEET.
Love this song so much but I find that snare rimshot to be distracting, like brushes would have been a better feel! Been drumming since 1964.
Classic...sounds like a u have prom and dancing with ur girl...fantastic rendition Mr. Carlton.
A monumental musical treasure..

Serious respect.
Never been a prettier tune.

Happy Birthday Larry....:-)
여러 버전들 중에 제일 좋다
Mr.335 showing what tone can do, Larry's superb..
Hell yeah❤

Maravilloso!

I'm from Germany, Moenchengladbach, but pretty often @ Spirit of 66 (before covid19...) - and for sure will be there after reopening again. Soon...
Grande Larry!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that a hint of Fender Rhodes in the background?
Wunnerful thanx for sharing
With his phone on the amp! :D ahaha Larry number 1 !!!!!
I once heard angels sing
WOW, que hermoso
Very nice…
A nice rendition. I miss hearing that third minor 7th chord tho. It really makes the song.
That minor chord makes the whole feel.
LARRY AND HIS 3 AMIGOS
Con el gran Travis Carlton al bajo
Go to 44:05 of " The Brian Setzer Orchestra Live in Japan !!!!! " to see this done by a true master. You will be amazed.
+danocatster . Well, at least, another true master...
Brian Setzer is certainly under rated due to the Stray Cat persona, but not even in the same universe as LC. Either educate yourself or go back to sleep.

danocatster I agree, man. Larry is good, but on this song, Setzer is the master. No one can do it like he can.
Yes, of course. Go and check out Danny Gatton's version - Setzer is great, but Danny is on another level altogether - and I'm sure Setzer would be the first to say so.
Gatton and Carlton are the men for my money - and I LOVE Setzer!

Ah yes, so schweet..!
comfortable finger moves
très belle version personnalisée, j'aime
larrys got some serious feel in his playing👍
MR. 335,,,,,,,,,,,,!
damn good version!
OK audience, now stop requesting Sleepwalk.
Purdy
He plays with such grace and beauty. This is a better take than Jeff Beck's. That's pretty good.
the tuning of notes was changed back in 1936 from 432 hz to 440 hz that is not a pure note then was the

Not a fan but the guy is Mr Taste!
Great cover, but in my opinion the version of Hank Marvin in Live is better
Yes, it's fine, although I prefere the Hank B Marvin live version too. But Jeff Beck's (live) take on it, with the Imelda May band is my favourite.
@@BluesmanDizzy Many thanks for your opinion
His B string is just a bit flat.
Satriani's cover is a great interpretation & simply the best..in my opinion. Carlton & his group seemed to be un-prepared & un-rehearsed which is shocking for pros??
Nothing wrong with those note. It’s called ghosts note.
zzzzzzzzzzzz
Were these guys practicing this for the first time?? Terrible arrangement w the musicians appearing to be out of synch!!
Keyboard player plays a wrong note at 0.11 and larrys first note bend falls short of the note it should be, Really this should be happening with guys at this level, And I thought it was a lame cover anyway, IMHO.
MikeyZ Synth-Eti-Cut who cares what you think. Hahaha. That's why he is up there and your in moms house

What a ear !!! You are correct.
Just a passing note... he did the same note farther in... its a like 3rd below the chord, still sounds like part of the scale..just not a scale i would have used-- or if i was sitting in on bass in this particular track , it would have caused me to pause, and ask the keyboard player.. Sweet! This is now and has always been one of my all time favorite songs
