Hi Brian - Thanks for making some videos and sharing fixes!
A friend just gave me an Oliver 7 that was her great grandfathers.
It has gotten dusty and rusty...and something leaked on it.
But after cleaning about it, oiling tinkering and exploring... It seems to want to come back to life.!!
Keys are moving and snapping, bell dinging, nickel shining, rollers rolling.
My trouble to the point is that my space bar won't move the roller over a space. No keys except tab will move the carriage into the next strike position. G B and V get stuck easily.
"Right and Left" allow me to take on and off ...the cairrage, but I don't know what else those keys do.
I spent most my time searching about for some type of "Moving Lock" some lever, knob or hasp that keeps the cairrage from rattling off when the machine is moved or stored.
I will inspect the "Star Thingy" and another "Barrel shaped" piece for teeth and motion, as I got from another of your "what to look for when you buy and oliver video''
But any space bar/spacing actuator pointers would be wonderful!
    Thank you :) Fritz

      Hi Fritz,
Congratulations, That sounds like a wonderful gift.
I think the escapement may be out of adjustment and the sticky keys may just need a bit of oil in the right spot. I made a things to adjust under your Oliver video that covers that. It was a while ago so I may make another video that shows the adjustment more clearly and I will include freeing up stiff keys. I don’t have many spare parts but if you have other repair questions you can contact me at info@thevintagetype.com.
      Regards,
      Bryan.

    Hi Brian,
After oiling what you suggested my CAP now returns to the top like it should. Thanks! My F, G, and H show 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 above them, but type an upside down v, asterisk , and =. Maybe some of the keys are off of another Oliver?

Hi Dave, Thats great, very glad the video was helpful. As far as the keys, I think you are right. Those are the most common symbols and the fractions are from a specialized layout. I think I have the correct keys for your machine and could trade if you like.

Your videos are super helpful and I really appreciate them! Quick question - do you have any spare spool caps for an Oliver 9? I am looking for one (1) to complete my machine.

I call them “spool caps” - not sure what the official name is. The metal cover that goes over the circular tub where the ink ribbon goes.

      Hi Joseph,
Sorry but I don’t have any for sale, they seem to be missing on many machines, I think way back when the covers were removed for more easy access to the ribbon, then were set aside and misplaced over the years. I am working on a die to make new covers for the 3s and 5s but it is slow going.
      Regards,
      Bryan.

    Hi Brian,
I thought to mention that when I got my Oliver typewriter one of the keys was sticking badly inside the carriage and after a little careful bending and a lot of oil I got it to work.
And I use my machine as a daily typer. But it has the pencil holder missing and I think I need a new ribbon again after my other ribbon is getting a bit worn out since I use it so much.
The carriage was giving me some problems but for right now it seems to be working even though have to move the carriage a bit hard to the left. Where can you find your ribbons for the Oliver you have for sale? Do I go to Ebay and find them there? Hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely Robert Johnson

Hi Robert, That is great that you were able to get your Oliver in working order and that it's used so often, as they should be. I have had the ribbon and spools on eBay but have run out of spools, When I make more of them the eBay add will go back up. Sounds like you just need the ribbon, I have 7/16" or 9/16", let me know what size you have and I can put some on a plastic spool. Your cost would be 12.00 and free shipping in the lower 48, I am at info@thevintagetype.com You could also get it from Baco Ribbon that is where I get the ribbon in bulk.
