    The issue is the wholly with in 6” while also being limited to 3 trees total and no overgrown. If we had the ability to be writhing 6” and not wholly 6” it may not be as punishing.

    I feel like there are too many questions left about our trees. This could be the biggest nerf we have seen. Honestly yesterday I was heartbroken. But we have to wait and see.

      We don't know enough yet. It might be great. Wyldwood use is going to be huge, I just hope we can get enough woods down. Their terrain maps make me think it'll be a big issue, but we don't know enough yet.

      @@johnwallace-howell5849 to be honest I think there are a lot of issues with the trees, we lost overgrown, which now everything we do needs a tree, and we are limited to 3 ? Not sure if that is 3 models ? Or 3 sets ? Also ALOT of units have large bases. Tree lords WW 6 inches ? Alarielle base is larger then 6 inches , so we can’t teleport her ? Or use the healing from the trees ? Strike and Fade says in combat, if you killed something you can’t use it. Honestly strike and fade is extremely situational, even if we get to use trees right. Way too early to tell yes. I will just say this faction focus does not inspire like some of the others.

      I share your pain. Battle traits have received one of the biggest nerfs across any faction. Why? Only GW know (or do they?…)

      Also I don't think it's the biggest nerf. The traits are great- leveraging them is gonna be tough. But we gotta wait and see till we play games.

    Rob. Thank you for your amazing work. I appreciate your positive attitude to changes in general. However in the case of sylvaneth battle traits these are terrible. Massive nerf to sylvaneth. Let me explain why:
    - army needs wyldwoods to function and now you can kill them, immediately shutting down Sylvaneth (only army with such a risk)
    - previously you could benefit from terrain to be overgrown. Now you need to place new wyldwoods that fit in the terrain. Which is going to be extremely hard / imposible: so in case you can place your wyldwoods down, you don’t get to choose where to place them but rather the few places where it may fit
    - wholly within 6”. Alarielle base is 6,5” and is extremely hard to have your army so close to so few awakened wyldwoods which will be located probably in places you don’t want
    - strike & fade. Massive nerf. Now you get hit back (and we know that Sylvaneth is not that resilient). I know that striking and not getting any retaliation is powerful, but that’s actually what shooting is about or magic is about and nobody complains about it…
    - Teleports much more restrictive: in movement phase not possible if you are locked in combat and strike & fade not possible if not in combat… too many restriction
    To be honest, warscrolls do look good (not SoB / S2D good but still good although the spiteriders hit/ wound feels weak)

      Yo! Like your comment, really good points but remember, this isn't your army release, if felt the same with Tzeentch, the rules there would be TERRIBLE...if they were for 3rd Ed.
      I'm sure there will be loads of ways to grow trees, we've seen two here already! So that won't be a problem, even if your opponent wastes time attacking terrain (which you should HOPE they do!), you're automatically getting more or healing it in your hero phase anyway!
      You still have Strike and Fade, and shooting and magic....so I'm not sure what the issue is really, its a very cool ability and the whole thing reads very "Sylvaneth...y".
      Teleports will be HUGE for great bows! Always having a target in range that's hard to chase down, and they won't care about movement restrictions after either.
      I particularly like the idea of Durthu countercharging and damaging (if not killing) a monster, then in Sylvaneth hero phase Alarielle kills it with Metamorphosis, that turns it into woods which in turn heal Durthu!! 🤯
      I think there's loads of utility here and they'll be fun to play with and against.

      Nailed it @juapa. And even with full strength teleports in 3.0, Sylvaneth were a lower tier faction... Not sure what GW is thinking here, but I am not excited to play Sylvaneth.

      The biggest strength of Sylvaneth is also their strongest weakness: Strike and Fade means you can jump out of combat without getting hit back. However, that also means jumping off of objectives - not just taking ground, but holding ground. While Sylvaneth can buff the bejeezus out of Durthu or some Kurnoth Hunters to clear an objective, the lack of defensive abilities means they get to clear the objective, and either stick around for the clapback or bounce away and lose the scoring opportunity.
      While the teleporting mechanism is really great, Sylvaneth just need to be a little bit tankier to be a really great faction.

    Nerfs to Battle Traits
    Depends on having AWW out which requires having wizards/successfully casting a spell/not being unbound/them not being destroyed/needing 2 to be able to teleport
    6" range
    Cannot teleport out of combat with walk the spirit paths
    Strike and fade now at the end of the turn so you get hit back
    If you kill your enemy you can't fade away
    With the new redeploy being always available the aggressive scalpel-teleport is easy to dodge on the important unit
    Honestly dude, this is catastrophic to the old play style to the point where I wish they had replaced it instead of giving us this mangled corpse that frankly doesn't function

      Could not agree more. They really needed to show the AWW warscroll as well. As it stands with only being able to have 3 trees out with tree song plus the other restrictions, it’s looking impossible to play this army. Also kurnothi getting nerfed out of the blue as well (spearhead warscroll) seems wild to me.
      Hopefully there’s a subfaction or something gives us back the 9” to AWW or something because it’s looking a little bleak right now.

      This nerf is incredibly heavy handed and affects the army in so many ways.

    I Think from the rules I saw, that the Strike First, has to be given before the Fight pase to be used.
    Normally true, but, they did catch an edge case, which was a surprise.
    Also when looking at the models always compare Retail Price to Model Cost.

    As a player who started collecting Sylvaneth not long before 4th was announced I really look forward to learning how it works. Might have to start making a Lorax themed Arch Revenant if they're coming for my trees....

      From the summary anything with an insect seems super good(those beetle lancers look scary with that speed & damage boost! 🪲)

    Picked up the sylvaneth vanguard box and almost finished painting it. I'm new to AoS and not sure if I want to play full 2k points games but this actually got me pretty excited.

    My issue. Is this army is 100% reliant on the trees but it's super super easy to shut down the teleports and if you aren't within these small areas on the map you get, no army ability, (seemingly no detachment ability), and sounds like a lot of datasheet abilities

    When I first got in to Warhammer again I wanted wood elves but found they had gone with AoS.
    I grabbed an Arch-Revenant instead and have picked up a few models since then. Seeing I only need Kurnoth hunters to give Spearhead a go I think now is a good time to build and paint my tree folk because this looks great.
    Really wanna see the Warsong Revenant and wanna grab some Spiteriders and Gossamid archers, doesn't even matter if they are good or not because rule of cool.

    Strike and fade got really nerf, to strike and the teleport was a great way to get some control over the combat. To hit something and if that combat went not so great, then we could save that unit from getting destroy

    I really hope that the terrain pieces have an ability that says something like “when this terrain pice is destroyed give all Sylvaneth wholly within 6 inches +1 to wound rolls” or something like that o represent the rage the sylvaneth feel when you mess with their stuff.

    Can always count on a solid analysis with Rob at the Elm. He Leafs no stone unturned. But It seems like half of the abilities in the game right now involve rolling a D6 or a D-Tree for mortal damage.

    Durthu is a bit of a downgrade and worried about how crucial the awakened wyldwoods are to the armys function, auto-include a wizard now and if they're dead the army falls apart with it. Losing 9" reach on wyldwood auras and no overgrown terrain is a bit yikes, sylvaneth players coping right now

      Plus imagine trying to go up against a faction that just does. It allow you to get spells out ? I’m going to stick with playing my Sylvaneth. But I have been following the faction focus very closely, and our battle traits are completely dependent on our trees, and being WW 6 of them. Perhaps there is a “Subfaction” that helps, or something. But as it stands right now all of our battle traits are extremely situational and extremely depend.

    As a nurgle/tzeentch player who was just starting to put a Sylvaneth army together to start fourth, I'm feeling all kind of ways about this now.
    I mean firstly I really do hope that nurgle in particular has something on some unit that makes diseases have counterplay versus this kind of healing. Because this basically looks like your diseases are useless, You are never going to get It to spread and it's constantly going to fall off. It will at best be block 1 to 2 units from healing D3 a turn. And then I don't know how we're going to combat them if we can't do any damage to them with diseases. Tzeentch similar problem but not as bad at all.
    From the perspective of playing these guys, They look gutted. I like your spin on things this time because it's helping Rob But Knowing the terrain ahead of time and being standardized just lets the sylvaneth player know to keep them on the shelf. I'm also not super stoked about the idea of being pointed less elite to make up for it because that just means I got to drop a bunch more cash and get a bunch more units, not to mention it's not really the lore and feel This was an elite army that jumps around constantly and you can barely hit and pin down but they didn't have much So if you did that was a big thing.
    It seems clear that just like the summoning they want you to know exactly how many trees you need to bring, and are trying to keep that to three so you only need one box. But if they're going to do that they needed to have a bigger range on this or make it within and not wholy within six inches. This feels super constrained, and like we're going to be dumping all our spells onto just having trees up.
    I was planning to probably in third go with the option of having 12 in on this instead of nine, and now six is ridiculous.
    I think the enemy won't even have to kill your tree, They can just roll up on it and then you can't place anything anywhere because how can you be wholy within six and still be more than nine away? And then your spell to summon new trees can't summon one if you already have three there's no choice to replace when you already have which I think they need, You just have to heal them. And I was building a force around tree men, durthu, and Lady of Vines, Plus the arch revenant and dryads and kurnoth. Now it seems the monster mash Treeman/durthu list is even more built around the AWW's than ever because our subfaction is just better healing next to a tree. But that's a very combat focused army I don't have enough casting for that, Guess I'll have to run Treeman as ancients, Since it seems like there could be a real magic tax just to have our battle traits. Because that's all this is is a tax if you have to use up your unlimited spells and your casts just to continuously make sure you have the ability to take advantage of your army abilities.
    It also seems to me like this edition is just gutting so much of the Johnny potential of factions, But I'm really fingers crossed here that all that stuff is in the war scrolls and doesn't just not exist. Alarielle seems like maybe she's going to work incredibly well in a monster mash list because her ability to resurrect and then you can pretty quickly heal that tree man back up.

    Got the rampage wrong on Durthu. The more combat weapons a monster has the more powerful it is. The big pig from IJ would lose 4 attacks.

    The limit on wyldwoods is so hamstringing. Buying and transporting multiple boxes of trees wasn't fun, but you know what's less fun? Playing an army that loses it's abilities because your opponent sits near your tree and you can't place more down because of bad terrain rules.

    Having seen what everyone else is working with, I think Sylvaneth have some neat tricksand are going to be tricky to hit, and when you do, you better finish them, or they'll just heal up again!

      I just checked the Tzeentch reveal because someone told me they had a rules clarification there and it seems that ordinarily units can only be replaced once. So still good but not THAT good.

    Just realized while watching the ironjawz review. Alarielle can’t benefit from any of the faction abilities or teleports except under very specific and extremely rare circumstances because her base is 6.29” around like a mawkrusha. 😢😢 damn have they neutered the faction abilities.

    After I have seen what GW did to indirect fire because of a very good mechanic that was used by Guard and how that affects Deathguard I'm not super sure that they actually test how things work. Little hope for terrain setup here 😂

    Would love for Rob to pull up before and after comparisons of some of these battlescrolls, particularly for weapon profiles/damage numbers.
    For example, 4.0 Durthu got a little worse than 3.0 😢

Again, it’s assumed to be your perspective because you’re the one speaking. I get that it feels like you’re dodging criticism by saying “in my opinion” all the time, but criticism which relies on the word “opinion” is just diskishness disguised. You have every right to say how you feel, and if proven wrong it’s not a big deal. Your contributions to the community are frankly excellent I just find it hard to watch when so frequently it feels like you’re completely unsure of yourself.

    Every army got nerfed. I am hopeful this nerf will lead to better unit costs. A lot of them were insanely high in 3e and made internal balance awful.
