One non-negotiable I did in the past that really kept me disciplined and got more done was to not get on the internet at all (no emails either) until after school was done and housework (including laundry) done. If I kept up with housework daily I was usually done with both kids and housework by noon. I can easily get distracted and even streaming a video while I fold clothes doesnt work. It takes me more time! That gave me guilt free time to spend my afternoons on my hobbies (crafting or sewing). I also felt less need to waste time online bc it showed me how valuable time was. I could go on about all the positive benefits, but that one thing did so much! Sounds like I have talked myself back into doing it again 😁

Love your comment! I tend to lack in the housework area and it bothers me because I know my phone distracts me sometimes.

This is a great idea! The phone/computer becomes a time vacuum. I might pop on to check my notifications on fb or check emails. And I can get sucked into the wormhole of just checking one more thing...and sadly sometimes an hour or more goes by and my focus has been off my tasks and my kids (annoyed by their interruptions on top of that) when my focus should have been on them.

SarahB exactly! I’m glad I’m not the only one this happens to. So much mom guilt from all the distractions! I think sometimes as homeschool moms, it’s more difficult because most of us are with our kids 24/7 with few breaks. At least that’s the case for me. So every now and then I feel like I need to escape just a little bit. But that little bit turns into 30 minutes or more of completely wasted time. God help us! 🙏😊

Agree! I set my phone aside for most of the day and then allow myself to check in late afternoon while everyone has free time, usually with my coffee.

Great motivational video! Those are my 3 non negotiables also but my one area of weakness where I KNOW affects my whole day is getting up early before kids. Because once they're up....it's crazy. How do you discipline yourself to get up before the kids? And do you do your workout at that time?

  • @ourserenelife4321

I think that’s a great idea! My non negotiable choices would be the same! It can be so easy for the day to go by without getting the important things done. For me the most important, spending time with God. I have always wanted to me more disciplined with exercise and I think this would help. Thanks for a great video!

I love this! Something I do naturally, but also a good reminder of my priorities. The cleaning can wait. The kids won't remember a perfectly clean house, but they will remember the time I spent with them.

I feel like this is such great advice and I need to LISTEN. I have been really bad at doing school daily. I think, well after the dishes, but they're playing so well right now, I'm going to fold this laundry first, well they should probably eat lunch soon so we'll wait, on and on and on.
I simply need to make it the first priority. My daughter is very young, it doesn't even take that long!! I just excuse myself out of it.

Great video! Do you have tips or a video on what you keep and how you organize your homeschool records? In my state we dont have to turn anything in at the end of the year... I'm looking to see what others keep and get rid of.

  • @jenniferb1136
    @jenniferb1136 5 років тому

YESSSSS. I learned that you just MUST make schooling THE priority, you cannot homeschool around errands, etc. No appointments, etc. during that time. It's tough to do, but totally worth it. Also, I have found that some doctor's offices will have early appointments, so I can sometimes get those done before we start schooling, which I prefer rather than afternoon appointments.

I LOVE this advice! I am the person that always has like 20 different priorities, I never know which should come first, then I end up feeling like I got nothing done if I didn't accomplish it all, or just feeling frazzled all day trying to get it all done. I am absolutely going to put this into practice right away. Have to think about what my non-negotiables are going to be. Definitely #1 will be time with God as well, and working out will be one of them.
Thank you so much! Incredibly helpful! Would love to hear any other prodictivity-related advice from you as well.

At the gym now, so far it's going well today already! Also, a video request that may resonate with a lot of moms out there: "why we should not feel Mom-guilt for taking the time to workout." I "know" in my head that I probably shouldn't feel guilty, my kids actually love the gym childcare too, but for some reason I feel like I'm being less of a mom when I take the time to do this. 🙈 It's awful. Any tips for that?

Now this I can do!! I’m going to try this system and see if it works for me! I usually try to do a million things in one day and end up not getting it all done. So 3 nonnegotiable things it is! Thanks!! Such an awesome idea! I’m one of those who can only focus on one or two things at a time. 🤷🏾‍♀️ 🤣 so spending time with God, homeschooling my daughter and housework will be my 3!

I sort of do this. I have s few things I have to do daily and a running to do list. Most days anything I do from the to do list is a bonus. I put a star next to anything that has to be done in the next day or two so I choose those first.

Kind of going at it from a different angle, I need to loose weight and want to loose weight, but was not able to upseat my nonnegotiables in order to do it. I simply don’t have time to focus on meal planning and calorie counting. What I figured out was to meal prep once a week. I eat the exact same thing every day for a week, and I got my husband to help feed the kids. It’s not the ideal of having perfectly planned meals for the whole family with perfect proportions, etc., but it gets the job done and does not take me away from things that are simply higher priority.

Absolutely, totally makes sense...ESPECIALLY for me..I think about doing a lot more and then...I’ve done nothing ...so frustrating. We try so hard to discipline our kids...speaking for myself...going to try to stick with the “non negotiables”

This was really helpful and encouraging!!! I tend to look at the big picture so details overwhelm me and I end up getting NOTHING done 😔 I’m going to try this and see if it helps! My 3 non negotiable will be:

3 a clean house (this is a priority for my husband so I try to respect him with this as much as possible)

OMGoodness Ashlee! You did it again it all just clicked in my brain. That's exactly how my body works but my brain wants to make the lists and try to get all the things done! So my 3 will be/are
    1. Time with God
    2. Eating every 3-4 hours (I have gotten way of on this and look up and its been 5-7 since I last ate, so not healthy)
    3. Homeschooling
I know you had aa simple system that my brain needs but couldn't figure out on its own! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Best advice EVER! I'm going to share it with everyone I know. Of course they probably know the secret. Hug and love to you!!

Mine will 1.time with God 2.homeschool on school days 3. Clean kitchen before I go to bed. (I will tell myself I will just finish in the morning when in super tired and then it throws my morning off messing up my next day I honestly cannot function unless the kitchen is clean lol) and 4. I can't agree with you more. The more we put on our plate the more excuses we tend to pile on. Even though I work out of the home, I try to do the same now because I feel like I let myself down when I do not get to everything. For example laundry does not have to be done daily. It can wait for once or twice a week the most. Spending time with my kids and cooking dinner are on my priority list.

Love this! I recently made changes that have really helped us too! My time with the Lord in the mornings and our homeschool are non negotiable 🤗 The one thing Id like to add in is the consistent exercise! Trying to figure out the best time. I remember you saying without that you wouldn’t be able to homeschool as well be it Helier you so much! Love to know the order you do things or what has worked for you all? Thank you for this! I am going to do this. Maybe that’s why I never seem to have time to work out or spend my time with God. Maybe a good video could be about how to start liking working out. Also I know you are pretty far past having littles underfoot, but you’ve been there. I’d love to hear your advice as to managing life with babies! I’ve spent the last 10 years either pregnant or breastfeeding or chasing a toddler. I only have 5 so far but it seems to be really hard for me to put myself before my infants. I feel like I’m going to have to wait till we are done(whenever that will be) to focus on me. One thing I do try and keep in check is diet so I can at least have more energy. Unfortunately I’m not one of those mommas that loose weight while breastfeeding. Anyway, sorry for rambling! Keep the vids coming!

Awesome tips! I do something similar. I break up my tasks throughout the week so that I’m not overwhelming myself trying to accomplish everything in one day. I’ve also learned to be graceful towards myself on those hard days when I may not accomplish my goals for whatever reason. For me, as long as I’ve invested in my relationship with the Lord, my husband and children, then, I’ve spent my time well. Discipline and some structure has helped me to take care of my home, myself, do homeschooling and still keep my relationship with the Lord, my husband and children my top priority. Time with God, husband, and kids are non negotiable. ;)

Excellent video Ashlee!! (Whoever gave it a thumbs down is weird. 😁). I love the simplicity of your advice. Three non-negotiables. A simple plan. Probably not always the simplest execution though, I’m sure. Because - real life right? 😉
I’m going to start implementing this idea in my daily routines. Number one for me would have to be SLEEP. If I’m tired and sleep deprived, I’m no good for anyone. Second would be homeschooling my 2 girls and third would be my quiet time with God. We just finally got our home gym set up over the holidays and I need to make daily exercise a non negotiable as well. No excuses now, for sure!

Also, when do all of you homeschool mommas do your prep work for the week? I’ve tried to implement Sunday afternoons as my non negotiable weekly planning time, but so many things come up that it’s not consistent. And it’s frustrating come Monday morning and mom’s not quite ready. 🤦🏻‍♀️. We do Sonlight and will be transitioning to TGATB this summer, so it’s not like I have a ton of prep work, but I need at least an hour or 2 to look over everything and get things ready.
