I had the same thing happens this week on my build.. I tested grounds, I used jumper cables, I changed starters, I looked at the alignment bushing in the transmission, I was concerned it was something bigger seeing as I built the block 15 years ago..lol it ended up being a ground.. curious to see what this ends up being!

ive done so many mk1/2 swaps that ive had this type of PTSD for years. im going to be doing the dumbest swap before too long, its a vr6 rabbit pickup build, but it wont be front OR rear wheel drive, and it isnt a haldex awd....

I snagged a rocco 2 that was sitting for 18 yrs in a barn in manteca California, and then a 2l up in WA that was replaced for a jetta vr6 swap.color was the same, red. Had to replace all the soft bits, fuel lines water and oil etc. That thing was like a motorcycle, the way it went through the gears (Shrick exhaust cam and Tectonics exhaust). Yours would be like strapping your ass to a rocket lol!!

nice build guys. regarding those metal fuel lines, better to just get rid of them right up front, it's faster and easier to replace them with MK2/3 plastic lines from the pump forward. the CIS banjo fitting on the fuel pump is barbed and fits the plastic line perfectly, just apply a little heat gun to the plastic line and slip on. the other end of the plastic line has a metal fitting with a hollow metal sleeve that has a bead to hold a regular 8mm hose to run to the fuel rail.

I built one of these back in the late 80's to rally. I lucked out getting one that had been bought new and pretty much garaged and forgotten. So many seam welds and the cage was a absolute nightmare. These cars are way underrated for asphalt..mine stuck like it rolled on suction cups. It took a completely different setup though for forest roads though.

I love how fast this series is coming out/happedned. I would love to see what this think can do. Like quarter mile times. Or race between other VWs (this vs that hoonigan style). Or like a autocross event with comparison between other cars. Or like a grid life type thing like gears & gasoline. This build is sweet, but the best part for me is driving the car :)

As someone who has done this on VWs from that age a couple times.. It just hurts to watch this, but it's expected for people who do it the first time especially when you got such a limited amount of time. I've seen guys here in Europe just ram a block in like that in about 15 minutes with a forklift and a crowbar. The starter issue is most definitely a loss of power of some sort (ground cable or not enough supply) , because the starter cranks just fine, just really slow. If that isn't it the only other possibility is that the starter is just bad or locked up

time for an upgrade, 16v brakes, sway bar, 16v lower brace if it will fit with the VR6, 100MM CVs..... I love some of the goodies you got, the coilovers especially. LOL, the shifter ball took a shit as well......... I am actually amazed it was still there at all though. If I remember right there is a narrow and wide rocco radiator, if nothing else one from a quantum is wider if I remember right. Now the rocco radiator is something used in normal hotrods, so they are available in completely aluminum models with more cores. Its not cheating, gantry crane for the win any time you can use it, and that one is the best Chinesium money can buy! Don't move, don't even breath! Holy crap thats tight.... Lucky guy working that tight hole...... AH, Butyl, the stickiest, and hardest crap to get off your skin known to man. LOL@ the race switch, I was going to ask how hard it was to build the harness with a plug for the OE ignition lock, then I remembered how crappy those were anyway. New battery, turns over by hand, bad starter or cables. I dont run into bad new starters very often, but they do happen.

I'm with Charles , a starter on a engine like this should have the tendency to roll around it's own axle when supplied with sufficient juice under no load.
Looking in on the specs off the starter, it should say what the current draw is in a no load condition, when you have a 'ampclamp' you are able to rule that out.

Also, the largest wheel size you can fit in S2 is 16" x7" 4x100 with some bottoming out. Don't take out the plastic front
wheel liners, they are not available anywhere. Check out Scirocco.org for wheel and tire guides, as speedometer and
odometer issues happen with alternate wheel sizes. Also, with bigger wheels you need spacers, usually 8mm to 10mm
    to clear struts and brakes.

This may be a dumb question; but, why did you not remove the oil pan from the bottom of the engine? Seemed like that was one of your main issues getting the engine in... It's probably a horrible idea; but, I'm asking because I don't know if that's an option or just too risky from something getting in the bottom or if a part of the frame bumped the internal of the engine.

Big mistake not installing that crossmember brace, your front crossmember will crack and they are just as effective with only one bolt in on each side. Factory Mk2 Scirocco 16vs had enough power to crack the front crossmember and you are what, well over doubling that HP and TQ. EDIT - I see several shots where you were working out how to get the VR6 in with it installed - did you guys end up using it?
