If there is one example of a band that can be great through adding layers (i.e Anthony's great lyrics, Frusciante's guitar work) because of an amazing rhythm section is Flea and Chad it is the RHCP. Without the four main cast they would never have created masterpieces like BSSM.
It seems to me that the drummer never gets as much attention and recognition as the rest of the band does. Chad had been with the peppers for a LONG time. Doesn't matter that flea and Anthony have been friends since around 15 years old. Every member of the band is essential and deserves the same amount of respect. Just think what the RHCP would sound like without a drummer. Interviewers can be so disrespectful.
Plus Chad is just plain and simple a complete fucking bad ass drummer!! There is a list in my mind of the great rhythm sections in rock music, and Chad and Flea are near the top of that list.
