Good video explaining why to upgrade over Gen 1, but not a lot of information about what the cloud key does like the title implies. From this video i learned that there's a mini computer that connects to the internet, has two interfaces to tell me its stats, and has a shutdown feature. I would've learned to see how to manage a network with this thing, and how to access it remotely.
I am in The Netherlands visiting my parents for their 70th, installed 2 AP lights & a CK. I was not aware they had switched microUSB to USB-C, or that they had the battery backup version come out. Worked a treat though, and hopefully I can grab one of the battery backed models for my office in Ecuador, or grab one of the servers with built-in CK option if money permits. Appreciate the video as always, WW
this, still have no idea how Protect looks like compared to Video and if it makes the CK2+ a worthwhile purchase, definitely a lot of controversy surrounding Ubiquiti's decision of restricting UniFi Protect to their own hardware
I bought a couple of CK2 & + models. I never had a NVR for my own place and replaced my CK and NVR Server with this and it's great. The Protect app is superb, it always records which lets me scroll through the day. You can only play that back and any recordings stand out and give you options for that recording period. I reckon physically its almost the same size as a USG but all metal. Very Apple feel from packing etc.
These new units are available here in Australia today, but the price difference between the new and the old is huge. You can get the gen 1 on sale for $115AUD but the new one comes in at $329AUD. Its almost 3 time the price! If you have the Gen 1 hooked up to UPS your much better off. The Gen 1 device does a great job for what its designed for.
You gotta up your B-Role game. Slow down the panning, switch to a much lower F Stop to blow out that background. You might want to raise the camera a little and angle it slightly downward instead of straight on shooting.
The original first generation cloud key was an awful piece of hardware. MongoDB is just not fit for purpose for a device like this, and any power outage meant almost guaranteed database corruption. I threw mine away after about 2 weeks. Adding battery backup is an acknowledgement of the problem, but the right answer would be to use a proper journalling database and filesystem.
Same here. We were testing them to possibly deploy at client sites and ended up seeing soft bricks, corrupted databases, failed site migrations, etc. We ended up just setting up an Azure server and have not had a single problem. I run my controller software on a mac at the house. High hopes for this new one.
I have mine running on an Odroid XU4, on top of Ubuntu 16.04LTS. Upgrades fine so far. In fact it updated to the latest version of Oracle Java the other day with no issues.
I was surprised to see a full screen video frame when the video started no picture in picture with the screen capture behind it !!! Genuinely surprised ;)
For the same price I can buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab A. The Tab won't shut down for a long time during power failure, includes a usable touch screen so you don't need a separate PC to log in and 16gb expandable memory. The processor is older and slower but it still sounds like a better option to me, thoughts? Is there anything the cloud key software can do that the Android app can't?
Nice video. What does the the gen 2 do that the gen 1 can't? I see it can handle more sties/devices, has more horsepower... but for a SOHO user what are the reason to upgrade?
Thanks for this but ... what is a 'cloud key'? What is it used for? No need to answer since I can look it up. Maybe there are other viewers who were wondering too. Keep up the good work, Willie.
It is an optional turnkey device that runs the UniFi controller software. I have my UniFi controller on a digital ocean droplet. (Virtual Linux machine). It’s for centrally managing configuration on the UniFi line of access points, switches and unify security gateway router.
Quite a jump though extra $100 - I like to have a CK at each location , and for 80$/ea was pretty reasonable - can add in a 50$ ups and keep all the gear up not just the CK. Love the idea, need a way to have a UPS tell the CK to shutdown - then i'll buy up all those other gen 1 and 2 ones cheap!
Willie do you use cloud keys for a lot of your clients? Why not just use a cloud server and send all sites to that? Do you want them to be able to manage their own equipment?
ok this Cloud key is bigger than the old one, has a metal case, has more memory, has a nice interface a pretty datasheet, and so on , but I am still stuck with a simple question : " what is it used for ?". Sorry buddy... this should be the main purpose of the video
Thanks Willie 🤙🏼 I seen this new cloudkey through internet but our provider of ubiquiti haven’t received it yet, so i’m aware of new stuff with you; I’ve ear we can use it for Unifi Video right?
Hi Willie! Thanks once again for your video! I noticed in the brochure that it says "WiFi Interface: Yes". Does that mean it's possible to power this via USB C and run the controller on WiFi only? Thank again! 🍻
so i can just replace my cloud key gen 1 with Cloud Key Gen2 Plus and add cameras since it has 1TB , i dont need to buy NVR ? its all in one or for what the hell do i need 1TB in cloud key
Better exterior materials, better hardware (better processor, more memory and more storage), LCD screen with information readout. Imagine a client calling and you can say "What does the screen say?"
if you have to ask then maybe you need to take the time and look on one of the search engines and read the details.... common sense isn't so common apparently
Willie Howe I have searched a lot and have not found anything in a week, ubnt sale is only available in America and Canada, is it available for you to sell?
I reckon you'd be struggling to find one for a while. I'm from the UK but now in Canada and there's no stock here. I ordered mine from ubnt, price wouldn't be much different with import.
this is really a waste of money. it looks super cool and i want one but.... a waste of money. gen 1 is more than enough for 80% of people and if you don't want it, you can use your nas like i do and invest your money on actual UniFi products like switches or access points. they should make a switch which acts as a controller at the same time.

Willie please make an review about Cloud Key Gen2 Plus, especially comparison with UniFi NVR, pros, cons etc. Thank you for all great videos.

battery shutdown pretty cool.. Wish all devices had that.
That’s full $100 over the previous one. Kinda steep if you already own the white one

Good suggestions! :)
Geez what a Mr Knowitall
You might want to learn that it's B ROLL :)

Thanks for all the great Ubiquiti equipment vids..You've helped me with all my setups.
Would be nice if the device could be used for UNMS as well. And the 'Plus' could be used to save DPI data > The HDD can be upgraded to 5 TB..
I wonder if the 5TB is only a limitation as there aren't many bigger options......yet
Great Video Willie, I like the power option it's a great feature.
Nice, but for 179$ you can install controller on any budget nettop with ubuntu OS. It is always better.
Or a Raspberry pi for that matter
Agreed, its looks nice, but my Gen 1 is still running nicely... When that blows up, I'll probably fire up a Pi or VM on my HP Microservers!
I am not a big fan of their new run away pricing.
I have mine running on an Odroid XU4, on top of Ubuntu 16.04LTS. Upgrades fine so far. In fact it updated to the latest version of Oracle Java the other day with no issues.

Wow that new CC is sweet....thx for sharing Willie

UniFi Cloud Key G2 Plus looks cool to.
The camera slideby is too fast. I'd slow it down and pan towards the cloud keys instead of just going by them and showing that much of the background.
@@WillieHowe I look forward to your thoughts on the new Protect vs UniFi Video.
Snazzy video! I've been wanting to get a peek at the gen 2, thanks!
Am I reading that right? $179 vs the old key at $80?
There may be a solder, tab type button cell within.
I want, but I wait, can you do a review of the Gen2 Plus ?
Thanks for this but ... what is a 'cloud key'? What is it used for? No need to answer since I can look it up. Maybe there are other viewers who were wondering too. Keep up the good work, Willie.
UniFi device management
It is an optional turnkey device that runs the UniFi controller software. I have my UniFi controller on a digital ocean droplet. (Virtual Linux machine). It’s for centrally managing configuration on the UniFi line of access points, switches and unify security gateway router.
Thank you. That's an interesting approach.
I have the cloud key gen2 and the plus and i recommend getting the plus its just 20 dollars more and has alot more features ..........
Can you do a video on how you would upgrade to gen2 from gen1 in an existing/active network?
Quite a jump though extra $100 - I like to have a CK at each location , and for 80$/ea was pretty reasonable - can add in a 50$ ups and keep all the gear up not just the CK. Love the idea, need a way to have a UPS tell the CK to shutdown - then i'll buy up all those other gen 1 and 2 ones cheap!
Willie do you use cloud keys for a lot of your clients? Why not just use a cloud server and send all sites to that? Do you want them to be able to manage their own equipment?
I always put in a CK if they're using any kind of captive portal/ facebook wifi. The lag can be a problem sometimes with a cloud controller for those.
I think they lowered the number of devices, due to all the new logging options for frequency and duration, that are both eating more cpu, and storage.
Please do a review of the plus version and its video ability.
When shutting down on battery, does it boot back up automatically when the power is reinstated?
I have the same question. Any update on that?
ok this Cloud key is bigger than the old one, has a metal case, has more memory, has a nice interface a pretty datasheet, and so on , but I am still stuck with a simple question : " what is it used for ?". Sorry buddy... this should be the main purpose of the video
Have you tried using an anti-flare spray on objects you are demonstrating on video? Often the videocam does not handle flare very well.
May I ask can I use Cloud Key Gen 2 with Meraki MX250 and MS250? TIA.
Willie i see u got your winter hair ready to go :D
For 20$ buy the gen 2 plus IMO ...
$20? Where ?
reelnautee for 20$ more he meant. That‘s sadly true. The Gen 2 Plus doesn‘t cost a lot more.
Goodness, i had to put my speed at 1.75 for this to sound a little faster than normal.
so i can just replace my cloud key gen 1 with Cloud Key Gen2 Plus and add cameras since it has 1TB , i dont need to buy NVR ? its all in one or for what the hell do i need 1TB in cloud key
The 50 devices is 50 UniFi devices (APs, USGs. Routers, etc), not clients.
Hi Willie! Does it turn back on by itself when power comes back?
BTW what a step up over gen 1!
Thanks mate!
Aside from the battery, i have to wonder if it js worth more than 2X the cost of gen 1
Better exterior materials, better hardware (better processor, more memory and more storage), LCD screen with information readout. Imagine a client calling and you can say "What does the screen say?"
I'm assuming that that with the G2 Unifi Protect you can configure an external or shared drive for video storage?
hey can you cover the unfi XG controller and its device capacity
I also would like to know more about the Unifi XG Controller and how it's recommended capacity per # of 1080p cameras.
Hi Willie please make a video how to migrate from Cloud key gen1 to gen 2
Is there any advantage in using a Cloud Key over just installing the UniFi controller on something like a Raspberry Pi?
LOL
What is required to migrate from current controler to Gen2. Do you need to adopt all the devices and reset all the configurations?
make backup of old one, then restore to clean new one. Ensure IP is correct. Simples!
I hope UBNT adds Lets Encrypt Support for Cloud Key Gen 2 (directly out of the Box).
But i dont believe :-(
It says it has a WiFi interface...so the cloud key has WiFi now?
Can it auto power on when POE is restored?
Hi Willie , does the cloud key gen2 sends the notification when the main power goes off?
Can you show the new unifi protect?
Did it vibrate when it powered off?
I thought I heard it too... maybe it was his phone. :-/
What’s the onboard storage for? Who cares if it has 8 gigs or what lol
if you have to ask then maybe you need to take the time and look on one of the search engines and read the details.... common sense isn't so common apparently
Is it easy to migrate from one to the other?
What is a "dot connector", that you mention at 3:05?
He meant "Dock" connector. To mount on a rack mount.
how to access this cloud key remotely
Slap an Anker USB battery pack between and have a 20+ hour UPS.
gen2 is kind of retro looking
Hey look they actually utilized the micro sd card they put into their device.
How can I get it? Thank you
Willie Howe I have searched a lot and have not found anything in a week, ubnt sale is only available in America and Canada, is it available for you to sell?
Hasn't come to Europe yet as far as I can see, it's certainy not available in the UK at the moment.
I reckon you'd be struggling to find one for a while. I'm from the UK but now in Canada and there's no stock here. I ordered mine from ubnt, price wouldn't be much different with import.

iyo
The audio in this vid is fully fucked
you really should start your video with WHAT IS A CLOUD KEY?????? a quick summary.... not everyone knows or saw your other videos
agreed
What the fsck is it?
