David Frost goes from chuckling to seeing a musical moment about 50 years ahead of its time. Stevie Wonder and the band were amazing. But the look on his face when he realizes how much of a game changer this performance is is equally iconic. One of the most insane moments in recorded music history.
@@johnnyappleseed6889 John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
David Frost really spaced out to another dimension there. God thank Stevie for letting him hit that final key, I don't think anything else could have broken the trance
“And that is why…” Stevie’s voice has seldom been described as sexy. My goodness, his tone is of a man’s- able to hold you strong, yet gentle so you won’t find yourself hurt in his embrace. I love Stevie, a pillar in American life.
This is really a transformative moment we’re watching here. Stevie had, until this year 1972, been mostly known as a child prodigy making classic Motown style love songs. This is the year he releases Music of My Mind, his first work with full artistic/creative control that kicks of an all-time-great run of classic and innovative albums. I don’t think David Frost nor the audience - honestly, the world at that point - knew the kind of creative genius they had before them and it shows. That feeling of seeing a flower bloom in real time has lasted over fifty for us to still be enjoying in 2023 (and beyond).

Ladies and gentlemen you can now rest. For this is the best video on the internet. You’ve finally found it. No reason to carry on searching. There’s nothing that goes any further. The journey ends here. We conquered this mountain. We won.
I really love the expression of the host through the video. In the beginning you can see him grinning and enjoying the novelty of having a musical guest until you see his face change around 1:02 when he sees that Stevie Wonder is really putting some genuine love into the piece and he understands the performance is something more than just a show. And when Stevie takes control of the band and everyone works together as one, I think that's just so amazing to watch. And having the host get involved at 2:45 is the same. Just bringing people together
its fascinating everytime you get a glimse into the future of art through innovative individuals. And those times are rare enough to cherish inside only.

As this first released in 1972, I have to imagine that Stevie was inspired to perform these two particular songs back to back by Isaac Hayes' 1971 record "Black Moses," in which he also covers these two songs as the first two songs on the album, which are one of the most incredible covers of these songs of all, definitely worth checking out!

I don't know if I'd say he saw him as a "joke", more that he was just amused at the novelty of this new electronic musical effect. As you said though, he quickly saw beyond the "novelty" aspect, and realized a new form of artistic innovation was taking place before his eyes.
