  • Hey sailors,
Today we are going through the best way to handle rudeness and bitchyness at work. This may be slightly different to how you would handle it in a normal work/ office environment because life on a cruise ship is so different to normal 'land' life.

Great advice! I'm old enough to be your grandma and I have ran into all kinds of people through the years. All your advice is spot on. I'm retired and have no plans to work on a cruise ship. I travel often on cruises and your videos help me realize what the cruise employees go through to make our trips wonderful. We hope to run into you sometime!

My case was my cabinmate. I confronted her first, twice, three times and nothing, until she threw a cart at me, then there was a report done and next think I knew she was off the ship. And some of the older team members (who had done more contracts then me at the time) congratulated me for being able to kick her out the ship cause nobody had been able to.

Fantastic advice! I used to work as a Cruise Staff with Royal Caribbean, and thankfully, my first two contract were wonderful, but on my 3rd contract, I had the perfect storm of a bad manager, roommate and team. I went through every situation you described and learned that you need to have a backbone if you're going to survive. It wasn't easy at first to assert myself or confront these people, they definitely weren't "my people" but I'm so happy I did because at least I let them know I wouldn't be walked all over. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video and candidly sharing your experience as I'm sure it's helping many people all over the world. Great advice about making friends in other departments, that will save your work/personal life on ships. For anyone out there joining a cruise ship or, if you've been working on them for a while..don't let these people ruin your contract. Focus on the ones that make you feel good and lift you up!

What an awesome way to explain the ways around crazy work mates and their silly ways to intimidate the new workers…no matter how shy you definitely have to put forth a strong front until you find your true shipmates to have your back.

While working on a cruise ship is a different dynamic than a land based job, there are still some good ideas here for us on land! And I think your hair looks cute!

Omg! Such a great advices! I was working on a rivership and I had lot of issues after 3 weeks and I didn’t know how to deal with them, so fortunately I left the ship after 4 weeks. However I learned my lesson 🙌 trust no one, keep quiet and don’t care if they don’t like you, confront them and don’t complain to your boss, only if it’s extreme situation. ☀️💪🏼

Great topic. You could become a wonderful HR, or negotiator, consultant - advisor of management. I wish Sir Richard will promote you and you could give calm and useful, non-boring lectures on these topics for everyone. May I suggest that every month there is one of each
    1. Fellow employee interview
    2. 10 things on something
    3. How to...
    4. Off-shore
    5. Something random (none of the above).
    Thank you!

Cant remember having any issues with other crew members particularly, but there were quite a few jumped up managers (Cruise Directors or their assistants) that were obvious examples of the Peter Principle. One had a sign up in their office: "Just Do It!" (When told to do something 'just do it'). Another sent a memo round to all Ents staff: "Please do not transgress the 1am curfew (all crew out of the crewbar and in their cabins by 1am), as the consequences stand for themselves". Guaranteed to get any adult's back up, we didnt finish work til after midnight. Guess you get these types in any walk of life really. I hope the ship never goes down and I find myself in the lifeboat and them in the water :-) . The consequences would stand for themselves.

Former crew member here: They go to sleep with the "boss" to make you life miserable.
They will arrive late at the cabin and make noise and say it was you who called security and say it was you who arrived late and made noise.
They will give you a warning for no reason, so u have bad appraisal in the end.
Superiors will harass and make your life miserable. And if you give up of your contract, some companies put your name on the black list your passaport number and you no longer work on cruise ships. (In the end u are just a number for them)
A lot STILL has to change in this "wonderful" industry.
Ps: This is not the place to work for people who don't "fake it till you make it".
Cuz what isn't truth, isn't truth and some people figth for it.
Im part of the 10% of those who REALLY loved my work and life on board.

Such wise advice 👌. You have an awesome insight to the realities of human nature and interaction. I'm so glad my father has been such a huge influence on how I deal with people in most situations. He taught me that my behavior and outlook is my own responsibility, how I feel about myself is totally and exclusively under my control, and conversely, how others think about me is totally on them and not my responsibility, nor my problem (as long as I initially offered them the same respect I deserve and expect)

I recently did a contract on Royal, I'm Australian, one of the girls I was working with would constantly claim they couldn't understand my accent including after a month of me being onboard it was getting extremely difficult to work with said person because of lack of communication however, none of my other teammates had any difficulties understanding my accent, I had gone to my manager and expressed some concerns and I was that they'd look into it ever since that happened I kept getting told my performance was poor which it was far from true and got to the point I ended up having enough and calling it quits which I actually regret because I had made friends with a lot of people as I wasn't allowed to email the scheduler for my department and ask for a transfer as it is company policy that you cannot email your scheduler while onboard.

    • @emmib1388
      @emmib1388 2 роки тому +1

no -- you need to make an attempt to resolve it with the person who is causing the issue (unless of course, there is a possibility of harm - that they are threatening you, your you feel that they may harm you - if that is the case - consider bringing it to the attn of your manager -- or if it is your manager -- their manager) If you go straight to HR because you don't get along with your co-workers -- it just shows them that you may be a trouble maker or that you don't know how to handle conflict.... taking a course in conflict resolution is a good idea for those who are new to the working world.

I imagine they would have someone who will cut your hair onboard. They will want you to have neat appearance and 6 months is a long time to go without a hair cut. I am just guessing though. Hopefully Lucy or some other cruise line crew member will answer.

When I worked on ships I could've gone to the customer hair salon with a discount, but down below in the crew area some of the Philippinos would do just a great hair cut for less then half of that. You just had to stand in line for your turn.
