  • I'm test riding a Honda Deauville that could be my winter bike. Let me know in the comments if you think there is a better winter bike than this for less than £1500.

Riding on the correct side of the road, is very different to see.
The very same as we do in Australia.

Thanks @copper6600, I plan to be out on Daffy (Lady Daphne Deauville) a lot over the winter, and occasionally the rest of the year too just to keep her active, us old gits tend to seize up if we stay still too long 😄.

One very important thing to check when buying one of these machines is the coolant link pipe between the cylinders, the preplacement part is about £30 but it is a total top half engine strip to install the part, always change out the coolant every year to avoid this problem which if goes undetected and leaks will destroy the engine.

    very good review. Thanks.
here in October 2023, I’m going to look at one of these tomorrow for sale with 7500 miles on it, original owner, 2010 700. Not a mark on it, always garage kept on the center stand. i’m used to bigger bikes , Moto guzzi norge 1200, GL 1800 Goldwing, BMW, K 1200 LT/I will never buy another BMW after that heavily flawed design/I am currently on my third Yamaha royal star venture V for 1300. And as my small bike, I have a Kawasaki Z 400, at the moment
I’ve done 22 minor upgrades to my Z 400, I have a couple videos on UA-cam, pointing them out. Corbin seat, windshield, bar, risers, from groups, spools on the swing arm, rubber, talked, foot, pegs, Hepco Becker rack that plugs into the passenger Seat slots, trunk, small tank, bag, real horns, taller windshield. But I want something with A bit more wind protection, and carrying capacity. I commuted on a Honda pacific coast, PC 800 for 24 years without a single failure. Not even a lightbulb failed on that machine and all those years of commuting 26 mile round-trip on back roads usually six days a week…
I wanted to see a real motorcyclists video on his impressions of this design.
    Good job

Thank you very much Jody, I'm glad you found it helpful. The Deauville is a bit frumpy but who cares, it keeps the weather off. It doesn't have lots of power either but that's not needed on slippery winter roads. I'm just in the middle, literally, of fabricating some lower leg and foot shields for it, there's definitely a bit of a draft down there 😃. I'll be putting a video up once I've finished them. Like you I'll never buy another BMW, the paintwork on my last GSA was terrible. I'm keeping my K1600 GTL as long as I can still hold it up though, that engine is so good I can forgive the shortcomings, of which there are quite a few! Cheers, Mick

I've been to Munich, Creil (35 miles north of Paris), Perpignan, Luarca in Northern Spain and all over the UK on my 650 Deauville and it has never let me down, always performed flawlessly. Its only weak spot is a poor headlight, due to the badly designed reflector. 45,000 miles after buying it I am still delighted with it, especially the 57mpg.

Hi Rob, they're very reliable even if they're not treated well, my first one was pretty rough when I got it but served me well. I haven't had much time to get out on this one yet but I hope to be using it quite a bit over the next few months. You're right about the lights, they're terrible as I found out on my way back from Inverness in this video ua-cam.com/video/tB65c4eEmm4/v-deo.html . I'll be fitting an LED bulb to see if that improves things, it certainly worked on the Bullet. Cheers, Mick

Perfect winter bike. My dad bought a 125,000 mile bike in white. Did a service to be on the safe side and away he went. I rode it in really white weather including snow and was very impressed. Coming back from Birmingham to Guildford after work with a banging headache I was cosseted by the bikes capabilities got home without headache and very relaxed. I was gutted when he sold the bike as I’d have bought it. He traded it in for a used Pan European. Twice the size and maybe twice the bike but never the easy loping effortless ride and easy manners.

Thanks Pie Arm, you're right, they've got enough protection with the hand and leg wind deflectors fitted, not too heavy, just the right amount of power and very reliable. Second hand ones are usually in good condition because the hooligans never went near them. Cheers, Mick

Two years ago I bought an immaculate 2010 NT700,26kmile FSH two owners all old MOTs and a stack of other paperwork,Honda Top box and internal pannier bags,a Haynes manual and a spare clutch cable, all for £3,400 from a dealer.
The bike is a perfect winter machine,it now has 43k miles on,never misses a beat and other than servicing and tyres has cost me nowt.
The Deauville, labelled "Dullsville" by the idiot journos of the day,is a very underestimated bike with enough real world power @ 65bhp,loads of torque from the V twin engine and no messy chain with shaft drive, great weather protection and even with just the integral side panniers, even without the topbox fitted has enough storage for day rides and shopping.

@@5dTravellerWhenever I'm on the NT700,about every third ride another motorcyclist will wander over and say something along the lines of "I had one of those,a great bike that never let me down once". Build quality is as you say great and much better than most of the todays offerings,it cruises all day long at above the motorway limit acceleration beats most cars away at the TL drag race, handling is great for a 235kg bike as the low CofG makes it feel much lighter than it is,it returns high 60s mpg and doesn't have all the electronic nonsense I at 70years old have no need for, just four large analogue dials😁

You're right they don't feel anywhere near as big and heavy as they are, even a shorty with knackered old legs like me can manage one 😁, and we don't need the trickery at our age, we've been riding long enough to manage fine without it (I'm a year behind you) 😉.

According to the bike journos if your not on a 40,000 quid bike your not a biker. Always looked at what the despatch riders buy, they need utter reliability and ease of maintenance. Something the Deauville has aplenty. Only thing I’d do is get an air cushion if you find the seat hard long distance. Greatly underestimated and underrated bike. But then if the were super popular we probably couldn’t afford one!

It often seems the journalists are just there to sell expensive bikes for their advertisers. These days I prefer the opinions of those who actually own and ride the bikes, and UA-cam makes it possible for us all to share our thoughts and preferences. If you want something comfortable, reliable, inexpensive and economical to run you probably won't find it in a bike mag. Cheers, Mick

Yes there are still plenty around and anything with less than 50k on the clock is worth a look. They're not particularly efficient by todays standards, about 50mpg, but the rider protection and shaft drive make them ideal for winter if you're not doing lots of miles. I'm out for a short ride in it for the next video and there'll be regular updates on its performance over the winter. Cheers, Mick

It's not the bike that makes winter riding ok. It is first and foremost a Langlitz lap robe. Expensive but so worth it, bot for dry and warm legs under any conditions but also a dry seat when you walk up to your bike. (Don't underestimate the importance of a dry but.)
Next would be a full fairing (wanna see how old I am? Craig Vetter.) to keep the wind and rain off your torso and face.
For for ridding in near freezing and below I loved my Hippo Hands more than any other winter modification.
I rode for 10 years with no car. Rain, snow, once used a hammer to break an inch of ice off so I could drive to work. These three things and a good ridding suit and winter is ride able. Fair warning: I found the most reliable indicator of rain was not from the weather report, but from throwing my leg over.

Hi Steve, I too have been riding a while, and most of my many thousands of miles have been ridden while travelling long distances for work all year round, so I agree wearing the right gear is essential, if you ride in winter without it you're in trouble regardless of the bike you're riding. Late last November I rode a naked Bullet 500 the length of The UK and back, I fitted handle bar muffs and heated grips, wore a heated waistcoat and insoles and good waterproof and windproof gear. I was fine apart from getting very cold hands and feet while riding in -5C for hours. Cheers, Mick

You're absolutely right 👍. A 'winter hack' that some people use and don't care about is one thing, a winter bike that is better suited for riding in poor weather conditions is another altogether. Both should be looked after though, apart from anything else your life depends on them. Cheers, Mick

    • @5dTraveller
      @5dTraveller  9 місяців тому

Yes, the Deauville/NT700V is great between November and March, for the rest of the year I've got my Bullet 500, unless it's chucking it down. One of the only downsides with the older Deauvilles like mine is the fuel economy, but I'm not usually going far in winter these days so it's not a big deal. From what I've seen you get harsher winters than we do, even though you're a bit further south. We're surrounded by the Atlantic and the North Sea which takes the edge off most of the time. Thanks Flying Fish.
