    I'm not Muslim myself, but I'm fascinated by Islamic culture, especially here in Western society with the dual cultures at play. Thank you for giving us an insight into life as a young British Muslim couple, I can only imagine how many prejudices, stereotypes, taboos and fears could be broken down if only more people were as willing to talk, listen and learn as much as you guys! Blessings to you both ❤

      It's up to us (our generation) to fight this disease. Yes we're obliged to obey our parents but when it comes to marriage then each partner should fully accept the other as a future spouse. Otherwise their marriage is Islamically invalid. That's why we have an Imam asking each partner if they'd like to proceed in the marriage contract 'nikah'. The imam doesn't ask the father or the uncle if they're happy for their daughter to marry someone! I'd respect my parents' opinions but when an opinion has no Islamic basis, when it's complete nonsense, when it's based on racist 'disgusting' views (as described by the prophet pbuh) then I'm sorry, my religion has more priority than these ill opinions. Though I'd always respect and love my parents.

      Dads have a hard time generally letting go of their daughters for marriage, i believe her dad didn't have a problem with cultural differences he was just finding excuses, believe me i've seen several men cry at their daughter's weddings and it is understandable, one time i went to this wedding and after it ended and the couple were about to go home the bride's father literally hugged her for two minutes and cried and then he told her partner "take care of her son, i'm trusting you with my soul here" that scene was really touching

      wanderlust b I guess that it's just hard for some people to adjust, especially parents. It's could even be what they've heard about the other culture or something sort of like stereotypes that holds them back. Like you said only religion should matter but it unfortunately doesn't.

    Can I just ask something?
    Why do Muslim Arabs think that if you don't speak Arabic you're not a real Muslim? I was working at a retail store last summer, and this Muslim Arab lady came to my register. She immediately started speaking to me in Arabic (I wear the hijab). When I said I don't speak it, she literally laughed in my face and said, "How are you Muslim then?" It really bothers me when some Arab people are like that. Just because you don't speak the language doesn't mean you don't know how to practice your religion. I know how to read Arabic fluently, and am actually a Hafiza (Alhamdullilah). Honestly speaking, overall I think Pakistanis are more religious than some Arabs. Sure, some might not wear the hijab, but that doesn't mean they aren't religious. I went to school with many Arab (Muslim) people, and I personally only saw two types. The ones that wore the hijab were from extremely religious families. The others that weren't very religious, didn't cover their heads or their bodies. They legit wore mini skirts, shorts, and even bikinis. The Pakistanis that I knew who didn't wear the hijab at least covered their bodies. I honestly just want to know why Pakistanis aren't considered "real" Muslims by some Arab Muslims. It just doesn't make sense to me. Also, how could you be like that with someone that practices the same faith as you? Isn't there supposed to be some brotherly love or something? Lastly, I'm sorry if this offended some people, I'm not trying to hate on Arab Muslims. I just want to know the mentality behind this thinking.

      +maria bell kind of but maybe if he saw dina's mum get discriminated against and was just trying to save that from ever happening to dina. he's a dad, he's got a right to be overworried :)

    • @starsalign9303
      @starsalign9303 8 років тому +14

      +maria bell I don't think it's necessarily hypocritical. Yes they're from 2 different countries but you have to look at people's specific situations, cultures, etc. to determine the possible challenges they may face. Her mum lived in Egypt for many years and i think(?) even speaks Arabic, so she's well accustomed to the culture. Also, her faith is probably a larger part of her life than her English culture, and if you compare world cultures, some western countries such as England don't really have "strong"/deep cultures if you get what I mean (not trying to be rude or saying they lack culture, but if you look at other countries with distinctive cultures that have deep roots, different languages, foods, traditions, etc, these things are not as evident or practiced in some Western countries). Another thing, their families speak different languages, eat different foods, dress differently, etc., and while this may not be a big deal in Sid and Dina's everyday life, it may cause barriers or challenges (for example, i remember Dina once said that it was tradition for the groom's mum/family to pick out the bride's wedding outfit or something like that, but Dina was like no way, while it's Dina's right and I agree with her, his mum/family might have been offended). I do think that same-culture marriages are easier in SOME ways, but personally I don't care where people are from. Every individual has their own personality, morals and way of thinking. As long as these things are understood and agreed upon for the two parties, cultural (or other) barriers aren't so significant. But, in the end, it is completely understandable why Dina's dad would be worried. msA they have a great family though and they seem to get along great so it's good how it all worked out =)

    • @starsalign9303
      @starsalign9303 8 років тому +52

      +Aksum Princess Wow, not sure where you're getting this information from but it's all incorrect basically, and hypocrisy is against islamic beliefs by the way. 1) Men can't necessarily marry whomever they want, women have to be within the Abrahamic faiths. 2) Islam has valued women and provided them freedom and rights thousands of years before modern politics and civilization ever appeared and has done more for women than even today's politics. 3) Who bows down to a rock? I laughed when i read this xD In Islam you can only worship the one God and cannot bow down to anyone besides God, and idol worship is forbidden.
      I have no clue where your hatred and false information are coming from but this isn't necessary. Have a blessed day. =)

  • @pinkdreams09
    @pinkdreams09 8 років тому +38

    Thank you for being so open and honest. Truth is many many Muslim couples living in the west meet and get married the same way you did. I think it's totally acceptable to do so as long as the young couple respect each other and their faith and keep their pre- married relationship free from sexual content. Getting to know the person you marry before marriage can help reduce divorce rates.

      I agree with you in my personal opinion that getting to know someone is good, but islamically what they did isn't right they weren't supposed to communicate without a mahram(male guardian) but they didn't commit any harmful acts while they were talking/meeting and they did get married so I guess it's okay

As naive as it sounds I always imagined that a lot of men would just be grateful to be married and won't be likely to walk out of a marriage so quickly so even if the wife wanted to do things her own way she could just do it, not like he'll leave her for it. Also did you live alone for the first year or with family? Do you think it was difficult because it was first marriage for both, what if it had been a second marriage - less difficult cos you've done it once before? Lol sorry I just wanna know everything. The fact that her Arabic dad married a British women but was against his daughter marrying a Pakistani man due to what he calls "cultural differences " just proves that the Arabic dad has a racial bias against us South Asians ( Pakistanis , Bangladeshis, Indians). You two are a cute couple but it is really sad that racism against Pakistanis is either ignored or covered up , I mean people on here are blaming Pakistanis when the Arabic dad is the one who did not want her to marry a Pakistani man ! What is wrong with you people ? Are you guys so racist against us South Asians that now you are blaming us for your racism ? Sick minded individuals !
    By the way, Saudi Arabia just made a law in 2014 to ban Saudis from marrying South Asian women from Pakistan , Bangladesh, and Burma. These are the only countries where the brown South Asian women are muslims. Of course , even this is not considered racist to you guys

    • @zahraaesmael342
      @zahraaesmael342 8 років тому +65

      Can you calm down? Have you forgotten how racist south Asians are? My dad's half Nubian and half Arabized Egyptian and my mom's Pakistani. My mom got so much shit for wanting to marry my dad that she had to threaten to run away before my nana agreed. Why? Because my dad's mum was black. I'm the darkest skinned of the grandkids and I have the curliest hair and I'm called kaali by my mum's entire family. They PRAISE my siblings for being fair skinned from the Egyptian side but mock me continually. Dig in your own backyard before attacking Arabs.

    • @zahraaesmael342
      @zahraaesmael342 8 років тому +18

      Saudi Arabian law doesn't constitute the entirety of the Arab world, just in case you didn't know. So could you do yourself a favor and not stereotype if you don't want to be stereotyped? 😂 It's annoying af to see comments from the desi community claiming racism when we know for a fact that we have our own issues with a number of people.

    • @ishratquazi2075
      @ishratquazi2075 8 років тому +26

      Zahra Ismail Justifying racism against South Asians as you are doing is only proving your racism. Arabs actually have laws that bring in slaves from South Asia and Saudis are banned from marrying South Asian muslim women. Keep hating us South Asians

    • @zahraaesmael342
      @zahraaesmael342 8 років тому +11

      +Ishrat Quazi who justified the racism? Please quote. I'll be waiting. I simply pointed out how you have no place crying about this when you know full well how bloody racist South Asians are. Not all Arabs have laws against South Asians so your continuous generalizations make you look like a LIAR. I've experienced more racism from South Asians than anyone else and have seen how Arabs are too often glorified by South Asians as if Arabs are justified in their thinking.

    • @zahraaesmael342
      @zahraaesmael342 8 років тому +4

      +Ishrat Quazi you are a hypocrite, typing up overly emotional, unwarranted comments that aren't even completely factual. Your refusal to admit the racism by South Asians so you can continue to make yourself look like some kind of victim is pathetic and disgusting to say the least. The only reason I bothered replying to you is because I've really had enough of Desi people crying about racism as if we don't see it in our own communities daily. So hypocritical.

      +ForTheVirtue Lol no. In Arab cultures the children take after the dad's side most of the time. Take into account that he is a dad. I'd be worried if my daughter wanted to marry someone who was from Pakistan for example. They are from very nationalistic backgrounds and their culture and country is so homogeneous and different I'd worry my daughter would feel like an outsider.

    • @Ruwen.S
      @Ruwen.S 8 років тому +1

      rueexxi But she just stated that they were both British, and the husband even has a more British culture and upbringing than her since he was born in Britain, and she was not.
      If race/colour was not a factor, a worrying father as you say should have married someone from his own culture for the same reasons you stated above.

    • @rueexxi
      @rueexxi 8 років тому +1

      ForTheVirtue for your first paragraph: That's why he accepted it in the end lol?
      second: I just said that kids take after/depend on the father most of the time in Arab cultures. It would be difficult sending your daughter to someone from a completely different culture and traditions. Not too hard to understand. lol

    Guys, to all those saying things about Dina's dad seeming "hypocritical" because he wouldn't let Dina marry someone from a different cultural background because he did it too, i think (and no offense meant to anyone here, especially Sid) i think its safe to say that in the Arab world, Pakistanis are not seen in the best of light versus people of other cultures, hence her fathers hesitation at this marriage. I'm Pakistani and i learned pretty recently that that is the case many times in Arab countries, or the Middle East in general, so yea, i don't think her dad was being a hypocrite per se - it was just a hesitation he had based on his own cultural background

    I enjoyed hearing your story. Strange that Dina's dad wasn't initially more understanding of her wanting to marry a man from another culture when he'd done the same thing himself by marrying a woman from another culture. You didn't really touch on that aspect in the video. Anyway, I think you make a really great couple and I enjoy all your videos. Both your families seem great fun too and I enjoy watching their videos as well, especially Muliah's.

    Just curious why you say "don't date" when you did yourselves and by all accounts it worked out fine for you?

    • @user-wr4eh7gh4b
      @user-wr4eh7gh4b 8 років тому +11

      probably because Dina has a lot of people who find it fun to criticise her for everything she does so they'd be like "omg why are you encouraging this its so haram!1!1!1!"

    • @missbeclane
      @missbeclane 8 років тому +16

      Ah yes. The same people who feel it's their duty to police her headscarf. It's a pity, because their "how we met" story is actually a really great example of how young British Muslims are negotiating how to bridge tradition and modern UK culture. It's a lovely story.

      +Bec Lane she said don't date because she knew it was against Islam and didn't want to encourage it between her followers. I respect her a lot for that

      I always think the same when she says that .. She says she didn't date Him but then says they were "halal dating " for years

    • @user-wr4eh7gh4b
      @user-wr4eh7gh4b 8 років тому +4

      yeah i would've liked for her to go deeper into the story but i don't think she did because people are so judgemental. she may have done it for privacy too but yeah

    • @nafeesa8120
      @nafeesa8120 8 років тому +2

      There are some clips of the wedding but it just looks like a normal English wedding with no culture twist to it, ofc the walimah would be Pakistani as Sid's family threw that
