This is the classic Madchester sound from 89 other bands to check out are The inspiral carpets, The Charlatans, The Happy Mondays, Ride , Northside, Paris Angels, just to name but a few... Rave on !!!!!!
At the time the 12" version referred to as Fools Gold 9.53 was highly revered, they were a well known band, there was a weekly mainstream music show on BBC1 called 'Top of the Pops' and when the Stone Roses played Fools Gold on the show they were asked to lip sync, so in defiance the lead singer Ian Brown didn't hold the microphone near his mouth when he was singing, the performance is on YT. A lot of UK Indie bands of the era were actually very well known and charted well, the era from 1988 to 94 I was in art college and musically it was a wonderful time in the UK, loads of great clubs, loads of live venues (double what there is today) and just a really vibrant and buzzing music scene, if you haven't already definitely check out The Happy Mondays and another band who were a huge part of the Madchester scene and particularly the Hacienda nightclub (which was the Mecca for Madchester bands) was 'The New Fast Automatic Daffodils' aka 'The New Fads', just to explain, in 1987 Acid House started gaining popularity in the UK, and then rave culture kicked in and then the acid house sound started influencing Indie bands, The New Fads are an excellent example of this, they were an Indie band equally at home playing to a rave crowd in a night club and for me the best live band of the era, but you can see the acid house influence throughout the entire Madchester scene, sorry for going on for so long, it's just an era I loved!
Hey Mark, never apologize for being passionate about music. I love it! I do know the Happy Mondays...a few songs from them. I like them and will be glad to do them. I don't know the New Fads so I will have to look them up. I always love listening to new stuff. It is such a shame that we don't have as many live music venues as we used to. Live music is so great. The more technology we seem to get, the more people seem to stay inside or at least don't connect to live music or really music in general in the same way. Music was everything to my friends and I in the 80s and 90s. They were such great times for me. Thanks a bunch. 🥰
@@playitagainsue New Fads didn't enjoy any mainstream commercial success so aren't that well known, but they were pretty much the house band of The Haçienda nightclub, which was owned by the iconic record label Factory Records and also ran by the extremely influential band 'New Order', so they were a massive band of the era but flew right under the radar, the only people who really knew them were people who were into that music, two other influential bands of the time who flew under the radar were 'A Certain Ratio' and 'The Durutti Column'.
Hey Strictly, nice to hear from you again. So glad you enjoyed this one. It was a big dance club staple back in the day. I remember dancing to it many times....cool, funky vibe 😊
The Stone Roses were one of the most influential guitar bands that England has ever produced. Without them there would be no Oasis. Their debut album is hailed as the greatest debut in British music history; this album is nothing like Fools Gold, and if you ever get the chance to listen to it you will be instantly transported to the 1960’s, and as a result Fools Gold will make more sense in relation to musical progression. They reformed in 2012 and appeared to two hundred and twenty five thousand people over three nights. Fools Gold reached number eight in the charts, followed by One Love and Love Spreads which reached number two. They have cult status in Britain, and are widely regarded as one of the greatest bands the country has ever produced.
Hey Rope Burn, thanks for the backstory. This is a cool song and I kniw a few of their songs and like them as well. I look forward to doing more of their stuff. I appreciate you tuning in 🤩
The Stone Roses weren't mainstream pop type music. They were cultish and cool and had a very strong following on the Indie scene (Britpop came out of Indie which came out of New Wave which came out of Punk). Muse can trace their ancestry directly down this line.
Not bad Sue for something to groove to at a party etc, but just for listening, it doesn't do a lot for me .. Not enough happening melodically or structurally .. But at least it doesn't go on for 10 minutes like the album version ! .. Speaking of that, I read their self-titled debut album is now regarded as an absolute classic, and it features very highly in many polls of the greatest albums and greatest UK albums ever .. I like it, but don't rate it anywhere near that level .. It has a nice jangly and reasonably melodic sound, but the lead vocals could be mixed a bit more brightly ( one of my pet peeves, as you know ), and a number of songs are just OK to me .. Favourites on it are "She Bangs The Drums", "Made of Stone" and "Waterfall" .. Cheers, Wayne
Hey Wayne, yes it is definitely a groove kind of song for sure. It was a cool one to dance to back in the early 90s. I love the song She Bangs The Drums. It is my favourite Stone Roses song. I see why you like that one too. It has an excellent upbeat melody. I will play that one one day for the both of us. So many people have sited Fools Gold as one of their faves but She Bangs The Drums really does it for me 😍
